How patient should we be with Tannehill?

I'm curious to see how long everyone thinks we should give Tannehill to develop. It seems like a good number of people on the board are getting very negative after some preseason performances. After last year I understand it was frustrating to see Luck, Griffin and Wilson all look better as rookies but take Eli Manning for instance, whether or not he is elite is definitely a debate but the man is a decent QB, in his rookie season he was inferior to Tannehill and really wasn't very effective for many seasons. I think we need to give him 3 full seasons, I don't think he's going to take that long to prove it to us though.

Eli's stats if you were curious

Tannehill's, if you hadn't memorized them yet haha

What I liked about last season was that the ending of the season Tannehill was better than the beginning of the season.

If beginning 2013 Tannehill is better than ending 2012 Tannehill and end 2013 Tannehill is better than beginning 2013 Tannehill then I will be very happy with him.

Ignore any Tannehill negativity this season. I give him through the 2014 season to put the unrest to bed, then make a decision... I would also trade or release MMoore after this season, and pick up another young QB to groom along with Devlin. But that's just me...

Agreed completely, Tannehill was looking much better at the end of the season. Really we have to remember how raw he is, but he has the potential, as long as he is still an arrow up player and doesn't stagnate ALA Henne we need to stick with him. I don't expect him to be elite this year but hopefully he doesn't have to be either.

With Henne, beginning of 2nd season starting Henne looked a lot like ending of first season starting Henne.

As long as he continues showing improvement you continue being patient, until hopefully he's consistently playing at the level he displayed in the Seattle game.

Impatient. If Tannehill throws even one incompletion, we should give up the year and start the "draft Teddy Bridgewater" threads. It only makes sense.

Can't see the sense of getting rid of what I consider the best backup QB in the NFL, if Devlin isn't looking like the future for us beyond Tannehill, then replace Devlin. QB's get injured, frequently, so having Matt Moore to back up Tannehill is a must for me.

Agree with evaluating Tannehill strictly at the end of the 2014 season, at that point he's either the guy or we need to draft his replacement. Unless Devlin really shows serious promise, if there is a serious QB there wherever we draft next April, I take the guy. Even if it's in the first round, but then only if Tannehill goes downhill this season. Otherwise keep an eye out for a gem in the 2nd round or later. Heck, Tannehill at the end of 2014 will only have about the same # of games played at QB as most good prospects do when they're drafted.

I'm still fighting off the disappointment of not tanking last season in order to draft the savior Matt Barkley #1 overall. :shifty:

You only have so many spots and you're doing the team a disservice if you don't pick up new young QBs every few seasons to groom.

We know what MMoore can give us as a backup but you have to bring in new QBs from time to time, so either MMoore or Devlin will have to go in the next season or two.

Might could even get a 3rd string waterboy for MM too if we're shifty. :) Just kiddin'.

I'm of basically the same thoughts on this. By the end of this year, Devlin should be our back-up, if he continues to grow, then we could groom a flyer, hell, maybe even pick a 6th rounder from Michigan and hope for the best!

This year and next year. If he's not an upper tier QB by then, you start looking for one again. And if a superstar sure-fire QB is available in this coming offseason, you go ahead and draft him anyway, because you can always turn a guy like that into more picks.

Not patient at all. He needs to win and play well, he needs to be the leader. If he can't, get rid of him now. Get somebody who can play and win. I don't want to watch someone learn on Sundays and waste seasons away. You can either play or you can't.

I can't say I won't be criticizing him if he doesn't meet my expectations this year, but I won't be looking for his replacement after this year if he shows progress.

Wowsers. That mentality had us failingly shuffling through retread after retread QB for at least a decade.
You make it seem like we can just tell the Packers to ship us Aaron Rodgers if Tannehill hypothetically doesn't develop this year.
Sorry to break it to you but QBs who can play and win do not leave the teams they're playing well for. If you want a franchise QB you need to draft him and develop him. Period.

No man, he is not asked to do a lot. he's a young game manager. So if he can't do that, then they need to get a vet who can do that, run the offense, not make mistakes, hit a few passes.

Got to remember the dude was playin wide receiver three calendar years ago, and before that exclusively operated a wishbone offense, maybe he's a year behind in catching up to the speed of the game..

I wouldn't get rid of what MIGHT be your best QB to start developing a young one. Until Tannehill breaks out, you keep Moore around. Now, how long do we give RT?

At least until next year....we have to fix the OL and we have to continue to upgrade the weapons. So I would say if by mid 2014 it hasn't clicked, then you maybe start thinking of drafting one or signing a FA.

He has no time to throw because at this moment his line sucks. The only guy I can think of who had success under those conditions is Fran Tarkenton.

If he doesn't show improvement this year that will mean that Ireland will be gone and the new GM will want his own QB. He'll probably want his own head coach too.

Very Patient IMO. Got to remember this kid did NOT play QB his entire career in college. He's not as experienced as many would like to think. Obviously he can't come out this year and play worse than last year... especially with the new offensive weapons he has. I think everyone just needs to forget the hype of the offseason, and let this kid develop. We've built a solid core of an offense around him, now let it grow... it takes time.

I saw signs last season, I expect to see more of them this season in the form of a better Td to Int ratio, better Td numbers overall and a couple of 4th qtr comebacks at least.

Not saying he'll roll out of bed and be Aaron Rodgers, do think he can be a 25 Td pass Qb.

He wasn't? I thought he was asked to be a game 1 starter as a rookie despite only 19 college starts? Seems like a lot to me.

As far as this year goes, you're not qualified to say what he is or isn't being asked to do considering we've yet to see him play a game. HOWEVER, I highly doubt he was drafted under the mentality of being a "game manager", and by highly doubt I mean he wasn't.

In my opinion it's very simple. If Ryan Tannehill can improve, then he deserves our patience. And by improve I mean a TD/INT ratio on the right side of 1 and better production. 12 freakin' TDs ain't gonna cut it.

If he doesn't improve, or God forbid, regresses like Henne did in year 2, this FO or whatever FO is in charge should not be afraid to explore other options and invest HEAVILY in the position.

You can point at the few outliers of QBs who improved drastically after struggling their first 2 years, or you can see what happens if you follow the more likely trajectory after 2 poor seasons and see where the Jets are with Sanchez.
