Here's how this casual observer would like to see the draft unfolding for us at this point. Way too early for a mock? Yeah, but here it goes nonetheless...

1 - Chris Long, DE, Virginia
Al Groh says Long's the 2nd best player he's ever coached at any level. Who was the best? Lawrence Taylor, while coaching under Bill Parcells.

2a - Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona
Been missing that lock down #1 CB since Madison's decline and the Surtain trade. How this guy isn't a consensus first round pick right now is a mystery to me, but I'd love to see him starting opposite Will Allen if we don't land a #1 CB via free agency.

2b (from SD) - Martin Rucker, TE, Missouri
Great size and receiving ability, does not go down on the first contact. Blocking skills/technique need a lot of work, but he's got the tools to improve there. Parcells teams usually feature a quality pass catching TE.

3 - Robert Felton, OG, Arkansas
Goes from opening up holes for McFadden, to opening up holes for Ronnie Brown.

4 - Erik Ainge, QB, Tennessee
The next Derek Anderson, Matt Schaub or David Garrard? At least there would be some type of fall back if Beck isn't the answer. Ainge's stock could rise significantly with good performances in the outback and senior bowls.

    6 - Dominique Barber, S, Minnesota
Would provide help for a struggling special teams unit and depth at safety. Another "family" pick for Miami (too bad Marion doesn't come with him).

7 - Jason Shirley, DT, Fresno State
Great size, but a lot of maturity issues. Worth the risk if he slides this far.

We would need LB's if Parcells brings in a guy to run a 3-4 defense like he prefers.

thats actually a real good draft. do u think Cason makes it to the 2nd? he'd be a sure steal.

i think the draft will look easier after the FA signing period. and if we decide to part ways with players for picks.

Weare not taking a Dlineman with the first pick!!!!! Get it in your heads! Parcells is making the calls now not Cam/Mueller

Doesn't Parcells like a good solid Defense?? Miami's D is getting old so don't be surprised if we do take a D-Lineman. Let's see with Cam/Mueller in the 2007 Draft...the first 4 picks were Offensive players. Out of 10 players picked in the 7 Rounds of the draft only 3 were Defensive players. So...I think with Parcells "making the calls" would go with Defense in the upcoming Draft.

Oh yes we are. Especially since Chris Long's potential may be higher than Mario Williams. Chris Long has been a one man machine/beast.

And has been compared to the best pass rushing defensive players. I even heard he's the best pass rusher since Lawrence Taylor once, a player Parcells has coached.

Right, it's not like Parcells ever drafts DL with the 1st round pick.

Not sure if Cason falls that far, though it would be essentially still the 1st. I think he is gone before that.

Rucker hmmm if you are getting Rucker, that better mean the Bills got Fred Davis.

Nice mock. I like everything but the Shirley pick. The guy isn't worth the risk. He was suspended twice already this year. The most recent was his DUI, hit and run in October. When a 350lb man blows a .12 into the breathalyzer, you know he likes to drink....A LOT. I doubt anyone will draft him.

I like Long but eh... And Cason won't make it past the top 20 unless he really botches his 40 time.

I like the top 3 picks a lot and they can all be there...I have liked Chris Long from the start and Rucker too, if Cason is there you take him.

Like I said, I'm not sure why the Kiper Jr's, McShay's, Mayock's, Wright's and all of the experts aren't listing Cason in their top 25-30 players. I see Cason as a #1 CB for a long time in this league and by draft day I think the experts will have him going in the first round where he belongs.

Agreed, but we have so many holes and only a few draft spots to fill them. Adibi in the second round sounds good to me.

The Chris Long pick makes a lot of sense and I believe that's the way we'll go unless Bill can't get a veteran QB, doesn't think Beck's the guy AND thinks Ryan or Brohm are #1 pick worthy.

Might be right, but there's been prospects that have done a lot worse than anything Shirley's done and still been drafted.

I would love to see Rey Maluga from USC to come down to Miami, if he falls to number 32 he would have to be a no brainer as he is the perfect size to be a middle linebacker in the 3-4 scheme at 6'2 and 252 punds.

I'd like to see a LT, MLB, or WR in thet mix. We'll see how free agency affects the draft.

I'm not quite sold on Chris Long just yet. Besides, I think it's more important for us to shore up the middle of our defense (whether it's NT, DT, or, God forbid, MLB). And why is no one talking about us getting either one of the Jenkins cornerbacks? Mike Jenkins(Ohio State) or Malcolm Jenkins(South Florida). I thought they were both supposed to be elite cornerback prospects.

True but a lot of teams are really starting to shy away from drafting troubled players. It seems to be more and more of a problem every year and with Goodell's no nonsense approach, teams are being cautious.

That is two no brainers at that pick, plus Cason as well, who wont last that long. It seems there will be more controversy at the #2 pick than the #1. Fred Davis and Cason are two I hear mentioned a lot, but personally I would like us to draft a CB with this pick, especially as a DL looks a likely pick in the first round.

If the draft was tomorrow, then I'd be okay with your #1 pick. Chris Long fills a need, and appears to be the real deal.

2a - I'm not a big fan of Cason even if he is still on the board at 32. His value is boosted because of his ability to return kicks. Not a big need for us thanks to Ginn. I prefer Tracy Porter from Indiana. More of a pure cover man. And I prefer Philip Wheeler ILB from Georgia Tech and Beau Bell ILB from UNLV to both of them.

2b - I don't know why so many fans place such a high value on TEs. Personally, I think the position is vastly overrated. Give me a 3rd WR in lieu of a TE any day. So I would pass on Rucker, especially if his blocking skills are not top notch. Trae Williams, Colt Brennan, or Frank Okam would help us win more games than Rucker ever would. If they're all off the board then I'd take an offensive lineman like Tony Hills, Roy Schuening, Drew Radovich, or John Greco.

3 - Right now Felton has a 4th or 5th round grade. So if the draft was tomorrow, we could probably get him in the 4th round. Jamar Adams, the safety from Michigan is the pick here at the top of the 3rd round. He's the best safety coming out. We might have to take him in the 2nd round to make sure we get him.

4 - Erik Ainge currently has a 2nd round grade, so his stock would have to fall for us to get him in the 4th round. Like I said earlier, we could probably get Felton here, but the deeper you go in the draft the less reliable all those rankings get. But mark my words, we will be kicking ourselves for years if we don't take Jonal Saint-Dic, the OLB/DE from Michigan St with our 4th round pick.

6 - Dominique Barber currently has a 4th round grade. So he most likely will be gone by the 6th round. J Leman or Spencer Larsen would be ideal. But their stock is sure to rise the closer we get to the draft.

    7 - I like Jason Shirley, too.

And don't forget about Jasper Brinkley, the ILB from South Carolina who blew out his knee. It would definitely be worth taking a flyer on him in the 7th round if he's still on the board.

Really finole? Youd rather Wes Welker then Antonio Gates?

Sorry, every top team in the NFL right now features TEs in a big way. They are invaluable. A good TE can provide downfield matchup problems, they give a QB (YOUNG Qbs!) a big easy to find target, they are great in goal line and short yardage plays etc.

Would love for Beck to have a superior TE to throw too. Dont get me wrong, I love some good WRs, but the TE position was ignored for a long time, and now suddenly people have realized the potentional of that position and making good use of it.

I don't think OSU Jenkins is worthy of #1 and both Jenkins should be gone in the first. That's why I was assuming they're out of the picture.

What about Long aren't you sold on?
    - 14 sacks in a 3-4 defense with constant double teams
    - Just as good against the run, if not better
    - Ability to completely take over and win a game (see Maryland game)
    - Son of Hall of Fame DE, used to pressure and high expectations
    - Character and leadership skills second to none for his age
    - Al Groh says he's the 2nd best player he's ever coached on any level. That's saying something with his tenure in the NFL and Virginia.

At worst, Chris Long is a 8-10 sack DE, that also stuffs the run and brings loads of character/leadership. He's a better prospect than Kampman and Allen, so I think he can bring even more than that.

There's 2-3 other players worthy of our #1, but I don't think any Dolphins fan should be upset if we go with C. Long. If we don't, I'm guessing that the Patriots will have this guy #1 on their board, he's exactly the type of player that has made them a dynasty.

Good comments, I agree with a lot of them and several of your alternatives.

Personally I think a #1 WR is a huge need for us, let alone a 3rd WR, but I don't see us filling that need in this draft (at least, we won't be getting our 2008 #1 WR in this draft, though we could get an eventual #1 WR with a guy like Malcolm Kelly if he lasts until round 2).

Parcells offenses have had an awful lot of success with pass catching TEs. I think Rucker's a guy that can put up good numbers in that type of system. He's a big time red zone weapon, has great hands, decent speed for his size and moves the chains. I think having him there with our second pick in the 2nd round is just wishful thinking on my part.

    As for your other comments...
    - I think Felton is a 3rd rounder come draft day, but if we could get him in the 4th then great. He'd start for us day 1 IMO.
    - I can see some giving Ainge a 2nd round grade, but I wouldn't. Of course, when you see guys like Anderson having success, perhaps that grade makes more sense. We'll see how the post season goes for Ainge. More than others, his stock can easily go up or down in a major way.
    - Barber has a 4th round grade? Really? To me, he's primarily a special teams player in the NFL (though a darn good one). Not sure I'd be happy with him as our 4th round pick, but I'd love to get him later.

I don't think he has a small frame, but he'll need to grow into his frame to have success blocking in the NFL. I'd rather have to develop his strength/blocking than develop his hands, speed, 6-6 height, route running and knack for not going down on first contact.

I don't think there's many players you'll get in the 2nd round that don't have at least one area that they need a lot of development in.
