Well, shoot... let's put the guy in the Ring of Honor for doing his job. He should get MVP for making a 40 yard field goal. Nevermind that he missed on two others... AND the Dolphins were 28th in the NFL in field goal accuracy last season... AND he was over-paid for his under-performance. But, you know, I'm just an ignorant liar. What do I know? :shifty:

Great value for a UDFA out of Montana. Who can complain about that?

He had an off year, which happens, and wasn't worth millions anymore. He was upgraded and I'm happy about how Sturgis has looked.

I remain a Carpenter fan and I'm glad he was released now so he has time to try out for other teams.

17 of 23 having more attempts and makes isn't quite a knock against Carpenter in and of itself. If those guys are getting more kicks at 35 yds and under than Carp is for example it doesn't quite make for an even playing field. You really have to look at the distance breakdown to get a true evaluation on kickers. Having a lot of attempts from shorter range is more a reflection of the offense and could do a lot for a kicker's %.

Carpenter was a fair kicker, we have had worse. I wish him luck and I hope he gets signed by someone else soon. Sturgis gives us another dimension on kick offs and that in itself makes it worth the transition with his strong leg and consistency icing on the cake.

    Carpenter ranked 27th in 50+ yard FG%, making just 2 of 5.

On the other hand, Blair Walsh, Phil Dawson, Matt Bryant, and Justin Tucker combined for 25/25 from 50+.
Other kickers having more attempts from a shorter range doesn't really have anything to do with it. He was unreliable beyond 40 yards.

At least Carp will have lots of time to catch on with another team. He was good for us, he struggled last year at times, and had a big contract, something had to give. We all knew this was coming, if you draft a kicker, chances are he's getting the job or you wouldnt waste the pick.

Blair Walsh's 10 of 10 from 50+ yards says hello, and he was a rookie. I don't want mediocrity or inconsistency from the team I root for so I sure as heck don't find it acceptable coming from the kicker either, so I'm not sure why you're treating Carpenter as though he's more important than the team's overall success.

If we had a $40.0M left guard performing below league average I doubt there'd be a soul on here sticking up for him upon dismissal just b/c he made a good block that one time against Pop's Pizza.

This, IMO it was a foregone conclusion when Sturgis was drafted, that this would be the result. IMO Carpenter lost his drive, his edge, he got too comfortable and even out of shape. That being said I thank him for the good years, the good kicks, and wish him well. Kudos to Ireland for doing this early enough to give Carp a chance to regain his form and sign on with another team.

Very excited about Sturgis as I think he'll be very good kicking FG's but as excited about his leg strength (something Carpenter doesn't have and should have been working hard to improve) to get the kickoffs into opponents' end Zone, assure teams usually start from the 20 or less.

Maybe at 15 but I find it hard to believe Carpenter is a secret superstar who fell all the way to 24th because of field position. Coaches are well aware of their kickers' range, if outside of that range, most punt. Carpenter had a short range. There's also the fact that so many guys had such better percentages..

Sturgis won this competition when he was drafted, and I'm completely fine with it. The impact of Carpenter's 2 misses that cost us those 2 games cannot be fully stated. Had he hit those, we start off the season 6-1...let that sink in a minute...6-1. Is there any way to measure what starting off like that with a rookie QB can do for a team's confidence and swagger? We'll never know unfortunately, but I think the impact of those two losses is MUCH bigger than just losing 2 games. Is it fair to put all that on Carpenter? Maybe, maybe not, I don't know...I just know how p***ed off I was when he did it the first time...then to follow it up the next week...MAN was I fuming!!

Here's my final thought on it...had he hit those 2 kicks, would we have drafted a kicker? My guess is no.

Don't fool yourself, this is more than a cash move. If the salaries were reversed, I think you see the same results. Sturgis has the bigger leg and that translates to more points theoretically. It also translates to longer and deeper kick-offs, which wins field position.

    Sturgis is a freak.

They did Carpenter a favor by releasing him now. This battle was over the moment Sturgis started banging home kicks from 60 yards in practice as if they were extra points. The 56 yarder in the preseason game, sealed it.

GOOD LUCK Carp may you latch onto a team we don't play this season.

How the F did what I said lead to suggesting Carpenter was a superstar? I'm only saying he might not be the 24th best kicker in the league (may be better or worse) and that looking straight at %'s isn't the best evaluation IMO. Carpenter also had plenty of range in his career to date.

He is a middling kicker comparatively. If he were one of the better kickers, there would have been no need to draft Sturgis.

Not anymore. Last year among kickers who kicked in at least 8 games, he was 24th in FG pct. 2011 he was 12th. 2010 he was 32nd. 2009 he was 7th. 2008 he was 21st.

In 5 years in the league, he has been out of the top 20, 3 times. That does not make him in the top 70% of kickers to me. YMMV

I think Carp wasn't as motivated kicking for Philbin because he wasn't getting anymore running fist pumps for making a 20 yd chip shot, like he was with Tony. :shifty:

Well, the Tuna cut Jay Feely when he kept Carpenter, and in 3 of the 5 yrs since then, Feely has had a better FG pct.

Anyone who thinks he was a good kicker needs a head shake. He parlayed one good year into a contract. Outside of that he was inconsistent at best.

Field Goal percentage isn't particularly useful for determining how good a kicker is, because not all field goals are of equal difficulty. If kicker A is better than kicker B, but kicker B is kicking from mostly under 40 yards because his offense is good, where as kicker A is kicking from mostly 40 yards+, kicker B is going to have a higher field goal percentage.

I'd be interested in seeing where Carpenter ranks in field goal percentage from 40+, and 50+ yards. I don't expect it to be vastly different from what his overall percentage is, but it will definitely paint a more accurate picture. Kickers need a stat where different distances are given more weight in the percentage when trying from longer distances, similar to eFG% in the NBA.

Re: Merged x2: Dan Carpenter released.

Are we really censoring expletives because the 24th most accurate kicker in the NFL got cut. Stitches, I've been here for 5 years. Do you really think I'm insinuating that you think Carpenter is a superstar, or, is it more likely I'm making the point that even if you're right, he would most likely jump to middle of the pack rather than *** end?

My point is, coaches, except Tom Cable, do not tend to call field goals outside of their kicker's range. If Carpenter got the call that far out, it's because he was expected to, more often than not, make the kick.

That doesn't change the fact that a kickers field goal percentage drops the farther he is kicking from.

Not trying to defend Carpenter at all but let's be fair. FG% is a crap statistic. If you miss a 53 yarder into the wind in Cleveland it counts the same as if you miss a 19 yarder at Indy. Insanity.

It's probably based on the belief that even an average kicker would have made the key kicks that Carpenter missed last year. That those kicks may have been enough to get us into the playoffs and that Sturgis would have been an average or better kicker. Seeing how many rookie kickers with less heralded college careers excelled in the NFL last year, I don't see the fact that Sturgis has kicked in the NFL as derailing that notion.

Phil Dawson kicked for Cleveland last year. He was 15/15 at home and 13/13 from 40+ for the season. Kicking outdoors in Balt, Cincy, Pitt, and Denver he was 6/6 from 50+.

Baltimore's Justin Tucker was 15/16 at home and 14/17 outdoors from 40+.
Don't think the wind gets any worse than Chicago where Robbie Gould was 2/2 from 50+.

Carpenter was 0/1 INDOORS from 50+, was 0/2 on TURF from 50+, was 12/17 when the final scoring margin was 0-7 points, and his back to back weeks of missed kicks that cost us games were in decent weather in Zona where Jay Feeley made his 46 yarder and at home vs the Jets where, amidst Carpenter going 2/4, Nick Folk went 3/3.

Sorry but I just don't think any excuses can be made in this case.

yeah really. A kicker going in the 5th round is like a QB going in the 1st. The only reason Carpenter was kept around this long is b/c he's good initial competition for Sturgis w/o costing us anything.

It is a basic way of comparing. If done over an extended period of time, the distance and conditions under which attempts are made should even out to a good degree. Unless you know of a kicker who only attempts FGs at 53 yards into the wind, and another who only attempts 19 yarders in domes.

In 2012 from 50 to 59, he made 40% to rank 25th among kickers who appeared in at least 8 games. From 40-49, he made 80% to rank 16th.
    In 2011, 50-59, 50%, 18th. 40-49, 91.7%, 3rd.
    In 2010, 50-59, 50%, 17th. 40-49, 58.8%, 29th.
    In 2009, 50-59, 50%, 13th. 40-49, 88.9%, 4th.
    In 2008, 50-59, 100%, 1st,(tied). 40-49, 69.2%, 23rd.

Interesting. Not that I care enough to do the research (and I'm not asking anyone else to) but I wonder what his percentages and ranks are over that stretch versus year by year. Using this info, it seems to me that Carp is probably an average to below average kicker. Probably better than 24th or whatever his overall percentage was, but still not worth being paid what he was.

    Thanks Mr. C.
