The Texans blitzed on the play and I'm not certain but I think it was a zone blitz disguised as man coverage and that RT and Keller read it differently. If it's man RT should lead Keller to the outside away from the LB who would be responsible for covering him. If it's zone Keller might want to settle down in the soft spot instead of continuing outside and running himself into Swearinger's coverage area. Just a guess but it seems like RT wanted Keller to set down (saw zone) and Keller was expecting to be led to the outside (saw man). I think RT made the correct read, that it was zone and he didn't want to lead Keller into a kill shot. Keller then does that strange pirouette as if he was totally unaware of Swearinger and he ended up getting caught defenseless.

Then you're seeing something I'm not... Dustin Keller is in mid air. Swearinger is trying to get him low. He misjudges how low he needs to get. Dustin plants and Swearinger gets him in the knee. As soon as he saw Keller injured, he looked concerned and went over to him.

Swearinger shouldn't have dropped his head. Plain and simple. It's never a good idea to do that. Head up, eyes up, and perhaps this doesn't happen. Bad form? OK. Intentional? Come on...

but yes, totally 100% on purpose. He saw Keller and said "I'm going to take his knee out and end his season/career."

Again, this is no different than LaRon Landry injuring Bush, Dolphin fans screaming cheap shot, despite the replay showing accidental contact to Reggie's knee.

Your taught at a very young age to go low. You ever seen a RB pick up a blitzing LB? The RB goes for the LB's knees.

    Damn.

I've seen it 50 times now and it's still ugly. Look at Keller's head and body position, like he's about to make a move on the LB. I don't think he ever saw Swearinger.

The problem for me is not with Swearinger it's that too many players in the NFL either don't know how to or don't want to tackle properly. You saw the same thing with the helmet to helmet hits, people think that because they're wearing a lid they're invincible; they're not an neither are the people they're hitting.

Until there's a concerted effort at all levels of the game to get people to hit with their shoulders and wrap up this type of thing will happen disproportionately often, watch Swearinger's right arm, it should be wrapping around Keller's left leg-not bunched down so he can use his helmet.

Again i don't blame the guy as this is how people are brought up tackling-to lead with their heads, its dangerous for everyone involved and needs to stop.

Not the same thing. LBs expect and prepare for that RB shot for starters.

I'm just making a point that players are taught to go low, especially the smaller when taking on bigger players.

No. I've only been watching football since the 1960s. I've never seen a RB pick up a blitzing LB.

When they do pass block, RBs do not always go for the knees anyway. I've noticed just in our 3 games this preseason, Gillislee squaring up on a blitzer and blocking him chest to chest. Besides, cut blocking isn't the same thing as intentionally launching your head and shoulder pads directly at a receiver's knee area on a pass play.

Yeah, the RB is just covering his arse in those situations and the LB knows it's coming because he's running right into it.
I was taught a long time ago to go low too,as in waist high.

Swearinger's hit was legal and clean. I IMO, don't like those type of hits, but it's still a clean hit.

He tore up his entire knee and doctors fear he might have nerve damage. He's sitting out 2013 and at best, 2014. Career is probably over. Hope he makes a full recovery though.

My thoughts exactly. If he had hit him that low while he's feet were firmly planted, no jumping, I'd feel different. As is, an unfortunate situation for DK. As I said, I wish him a full recovery. Brutal hit and injury.

Exactly, just because one of our players got hurt, a few on here think it's a cheap shot.

Either way, as far as plays go, I think Ryan should of looked him off and made a play elsewhere, I knows that's some progressive thinking in the chaos of a play, but I've seen it done.

Just because its legal doesn't mean that its "clean". Think the old Denver Broncos. While their constant use of cutting was "legal" it was widely considered to be bad form or not sportsmanlike because of the injuries they caused.

He didn't misjudge anything. how could he. his head was down and his arms to his sides. he was going low to take him off of his feet by essentially tripping him. there was no attempt too actually tackle him. you know hit him at the waist/hips with his head up and wrapping his arms around him. I think with his momentum it not only would have been safer but probably more effective, possibly even causing a fumble or in completion. there was no attempt to do anything but take him off his feet period, and that takes control away from him and makes for a dangerous situation.

I don't give a damn who he played for. The hit may have been legal, obviously since there was no penalty, but it wasn't clean. Dropping your head and launching yourself head first at a player's knee is not clean.

Isn't that the definition of spearing? I seem to recall a rule in the NFL against launching yourself at another player head first.

I think it is abundantly clear that the league wants heads up wrap up tackles. not this type of tackle as it is dangerous to both players.

Cut blocking is not considered dirty. In fact, it's very clean and safe when performed correctly. Chop blocking is dirty and unsafe.

His career is likely over after that. His knee was obliterated from that shot and is at least 2 years away from coming back.

This guy is a mulfugging idiot, and a dangerous one. He had no intention of making a tackle, but a highlight reel for hits. Losing Keller sucks. BUT, I am more pissed about Swearinger's cavalier and BS attitude than the hit, and the fact that he didn't even bother learn Keller's name before twittering some half-*** "prayer" message.

Secondly, the league wants you to tackle a guy, not try to make a highlight reel for blowing a guy up with a helmet or shoulder pad hit. He is also too fugging stupid to realize that concussions cause long term effects. Hell, concussions are linked to Junior Seau's, and other past players, suicides. He had at least 3 feet of body to tackle that had nothing to do with the head. Guys like this are reckless and dangerous for the game. I hope karma dry rapes him hard.

Oh...so cut blocking is clean...I guess that explains why the NFL is contemplating completely removing it from the game and have added rules over the year limiting its use? Yeah....because its clean.

They're talked about removing kick-offs too.

I've got nothing but hostility towards the people who complain about the "pussification" of football, but I don't think what is currently legal as far as cut blocks is something that is unacceptably dangerous. It doesn't cause a particularly significant amount of injuries, and those techniques that do(chop blocks, low crackbacks, etc) are already punished.

A kickoff is dangerous by virtue of its overall purpose as a play. You can't choose another technique aside from running down the field as fast as you can and hitting the guy with him getting the least amount of yardage. There is no....alternate "technique" to it. You can't swim...or rollerskate....or fly instead. Cut blocking is a voluntary technique of bringing a man down. You don't have to do it. And many players have spoken out against cut blocks. Not so many against kickoffs.

I just read that Keller has possible nerve damage in the knee and it could be career ending. That's really sad for Keller I hate to hear it.

I think this type of injury will become more prevalent.I expect knees to become the new casualty as a result of the "don't hit high" standard. If defenders cant hit high then the logic is that defenders will hit low .That was demonstrated by the Swearinger tackle.

The rule should be reviewed and modified quickly before we see more of this IMO.

He aimed for the knee. There is absolutely no question watching that replay.

And for those that say you can't in a millisecond decide where to hit a guy, then what about QB's who decide in a millisecond to throw to a particular spot on the body 20 yards away before the body is even at that spot yet? Or an MMA fighter who can decide in a millisecond not only where exactly to hit someone, but with which appendage they are going to do it with.

WADR, I fail to see how since its illegal to hit someone in the helmet, the only other spot is the knee.

  39. What really sucks is that Keller wanted a longer deal but the we didn't want to pay him but one year. Now the worst possible situation arises where Keller gets, what looks to be a possible career ending injury. His choice to come to Miami for one year instead of a multi year deal, might have cost him millions.

Some times when the stars line against you, there is nothing you can do. I know the feeling. If you have a career doing what you love, cherish every moment you get to go do it, it can be taken in the blink of an eye. This isn't just football I am talking about. WhatEVER your career, it can be gone in a second. And it can ruin your life. I know, I've been there.

Maybe it's just me, but it sure seemed like there was a big distance from head to knee and Swearinger could have made a solid wrap up tackle anywhere in between without pointing his helmet directly at Keller's knee IMHO. I see a s***-storm of knee injuries coming this season with the weak excuse the defender didn't want to cause a concussion or incur a penalty and/or fine. So how is Goodhell going to address this issue?

Next thing you know we will see flag football in the NFL!
