Incognito got into Smiths head when he played for St. Louis and Smith was a Cardinal. Smith is a punk, all out punk, use any term you want but it all spells punk.
The thing about that is I don't think you're supposed to immediately throw the ball away if you get to your drop and no one is open. Ben Roethlisberger gets crowned weekly for holding the ball long and taking shots that his body just happens to be large enough to take. Tom Brady does this: Where does the meme come from that "getting rid of the ball" is desirable. Anyone who did it as much as this board asks Tannehill to do it would probably have a completion percentage in the low 50's, get called out for having "happy feet", and be called a non-play maker. From the point of the drop back where he can be expected to scan the field to the point of the delayed blitz is between 2-3 seconds. Cushing delays his blitz to that point because it's a point in time in which the QB can still be expected to be scanning the field. Think about it. Do you really think Cushing would delay a blitz to a point at which most QB's would have been expected to have gotten rid of the ball?
I remember that play and a flag was thrown and picked up, after Tanny ran out of the pocket... They picked up the flag, stating that Tanny was out of the pocket and was a runner when he was hit on the head/face mask grabbed... The problem was that when the hit happened, he was inside the pocket, and not out of it...
Cushing doesn't delay anything - He is pulling coverage assignment on Thomas out of the backfield. The Texans brought six guys, when Cushing sees Thomas go into pass protection, he is free to bring the rush, which he does. Cushing reads his assignment well, then tackles poorly. Clay had single coverage on a short out and thats where the ball needed to go, immediately. It was a poor read by Tannehill. The ball could have been juiced to Clay but if he didn't feel comfortable with the coverage on Clay, he should have sailed it over his head. The play sucks. Clays route gives Tannehill no time to look downfield and then check down. Lets just say that both recievers weren't jammed, Wallace didn't have a safety over the top (Which he did), and Tannehill had reason to look deep to either Wallace or Gibson (Which he didn't), but lets say he actually did and didn't find either open, by the time he checks down, Clays route is over, there is no check down. It is a dumb *** play and leaves the QB no options after exploring downfield. The read has to be way to fast to let anything develop, if he doesn't decide immediately then Clays route is over and he is left with ZERO checkdown routes. If thats the best they can do for a learning QB...it is going to be a long year. I don't blame Tannehill except for not understanding the only real option with that stupid play is Clay on the short out.
Seriously, if Clay would cut in - stop - then cut back out, his route might last long enough to actually check down to. The timing on that play sucks bad. Also, if Thomas picks up the blitzer then releases into the flats, it would give that play another check down and if Thomas would have done that, and Tannehill hit him, that play might have went for a TD. The play really does suck, it is badly mis-timed. The only real option on that play is to let Gibson and Wallace clear it out for the single coverage out to Clay. If Tannehill wants to look deep on that play, he has to know he has single coverage before the snap and that he is heaving one up. If he looks deep at all on that play, and there is nothing there, he may as well just zing one out of bounds or take off and run because Clays route will be over already, as is what happened, by the time Tannehill looks at Clay, him and the linebacker are standing by the sidelines. They have to give this kid better plays than that.
Maybe I am wrong but I know I heard clearly the ref stating the QB was out of the pocket and therefore not protected, so contact was allowed... no foul...the flag was picked up...
I was not high on the player and made that known, (had a much lower grade comin out) don't believe I ever took cheap shots, just stated how I felt, and from watching every preseason snap multiple times, he's definitely an improved player, and I believe I've made that known as well..
The play where Cogs loses his helmet after mauling his block with attitude (Which I love). I believe it is the first post of this folder, you can see the play. It is obvious that Cushing has coverage assignment on Thomas and when he sees Thomas isn't going to release and instead block, he brings the rush, as he should have.
The contact the ref was referring to was illegal contact by a DB on a receiver I do believe. Don't think it had anything to do with the hit on Tanny.
Incognito should send Smith a Christmas card with check for all the money Smith has lost bc of Cogs. Of course, cancel the check
http://msn.foxsports.com/watch/fox-...lbin-alerts-nfl-about-in-game-incident-081913 Looks like the league is investigating this, per Philbins request
Wow, watching the Jay Glazer video makes it even more ridiculous: http://msn.foxsports.com/watch/fox-football-daily/video?vid= e56cc828-d4e3-492e-80bb-9c71172e13b3 Smith clearly connects with the helmet, and there is a referee standing right there.
thanks for that, the video linked in the article is good because it shows the endzone angle.... and the fact that Smith clearly connects with Incog with the helmet. yes it was a retaliation to what Incog did, no it shouldn't matter.
Wake got put into a headlock and thrown to the ground. Perfect example of the Pats OL getting a wider latitude to protect precious Tammy Brady.
That would be the umpire in their new alignment behind and to the left of the offense rather than behind the linebackers, though there are still some situations where they still move to their old location. Anyway, he should be severely reprimanded for not throwing a flag and ejecting Smith from the game.
We mostly scream 'get rid of the ball' when we can see he has no protection left and time has run out before he is about to be hit. NO way for him to know that... usually. But sometimes, he can see protection breaking down and he needs to make a decision, even if that decision is simply to throw it away. We would, obviously, prefer he take his time... which requires better blocking for him.
Of course the comments under that linked video are typical of the ignorant fools that make up most football fans.
Rotoworld had this to say. .. Aug 19 - 6:37 PMAntonio Smith*- DL -*TexansFOX Sports' Jay Glazer released a video Monday of Texans RE Antonio Smith ripping off Dolphins LG Richie Incognito's helmet in last week's preseason game and striking Incognito in the face with it.Glazer, arguably the most plugged-in of all NFL reporters, suspects Smith will face a "severe" penalty and quite possibly a multi-game suspension. "I think it'll be more than a fine," stated Glazer. "I think we're looking at a suspension." Ex-NFL official and current FOX officiating analyst Mike Pereira agreed. It's a non-football act, and the intent was malicious. Per Glazer, the NFL has been made aware of the video and is currently debating its penalty.
I'm glad Glazer is publicizing this. The more people talking about it, the more likely there will be a hefty fine. Of course, in reality... Incognito will likely be the only one fined
I don't think so, I think Smith will almost certainly suffer a suspension, and I think it's more likely than not Richie won't suffer a fine. Swinging a helmet like that is a big deal, and if had suffered injury it's something that I think has precedence as a criminal offense.
Ritchie will be penalized for provoking Smith and allowing his helmet to be taken off. Smith will be celebrated in the city of Houston with a key by the mayor and new sport named after him, called helmet bashing.
Amusing to see Glazer hype this as a scoop since it has been here and on the Texan fan site since yesterday......
nfl.com is talking about this incident as well... http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...o-smith-swung-helmet-at-fins-richie-incognito
He doesn't have to be great yet. He just needs to be efficient and protect the ball. The dude is a sick athlete @ 6' 4", 220 and one of the smartest guys in the room. I question his ball placement one day and then see some of those sideline routes he throws right on the money. It's really up to him. How bad does he want it?
If the NFL lets this punk Smith slide with just a fine on this they should cancel every fukin commercial on playing safe football. Smith has been a punk and gotten away with shiit his entire career. If this was on the street Smith would be in jail right now with felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
And the Refs turning their heads the other way to protect their punk *** home boy. Glazer was 110% correct. I hope Smith spends the first 4 to 6 games in a prison cell with a big gay man named Bubba.
That article talks about a suspension of up to two PRESEASON games? What the hell kind of penalty is being forced to rest up for the regular season... smh
