So exactly what do high school teams do during tackling drills nowadays, play hopscotch? It's reprehensible it reached this point of lackadaisy. As bad & irresponsible as not teaching Little Leaguers how to swing a bat.

I do wish players would wrap up these days, but I can remember Bryan Cox going for knock out shots in the mid 90's. I've got tapes if him doing knock out hits. The tackling form has gone away with the knockout hits, but I do think the league needs to address that. IMO

Exactly. That's ingrained into you as soon as you stick a helmet on from day one and for good reason.

When I played my freshman year of high school, tackling drills placed more emphasis on pad level and driving through, not much emphasis at all on keeping your head up or wrapping upon impact.

I agree with most of that...except the intentional part. Watch the replay...Swearinger is absolutely eyeing the knee the entire time.

This is how little kids are hitting nowadays [video below], and it's not solely because coaches aren't teaching them proper head-up/wrap-up form either; it's because they're learning it from the NFL b/c that's what kids do- they copycat. If the league practiced proper technique as a whole then kids watching and idolizing these players would more likely follow suit in their endeavor to mimic them. Pee Wee or Pop Warner coaches can teach whatever they want till they're blue in the face, however, as long as NFL players do it a different way, many kids will think it's acceptable b/c let's face it--- in an impressionable kid's mind, NFL player > Pee Wee coach.

wow, so some of you never got to experience the joys of being hit by a proper head-up, wrap-up, drive-and-plow tackle? Those are like car crash hits where time seems slowed to the millisecond b/c you know what's coming half way through the tackle but there's nothing you can do to prevent it while helplessly immobilized. I don't think players today realize how intimidating getting tackled like this is b/c I can tell you- getting hit repeatedly by a true form tackler who know's what he's doing is pretty damn intimidating I don't care who you are. As a ball carrier you start to learn where that guy is real quick.

$2.7 mil of Keller's contract was guaranteed, he's going to make out OK financially. IF he makes it back and reaches the level he was capable of, his big payday will have to wait till 2015 earliest. We can't cut the guy, he was injured while playing for us, we have no choice but to put him on Injured reserve and pay him his $2.7 million.

This IMO hurts us as much as losing Wallace would, we need a seam threat drop off go-to guy for Tannehill. This offense is predicated upon it, this is a terrible loss for us.

This incident leads me to a question. Players do not like to voluntarily wear knee braces as a general rule. Especially skill position players. That they limit mobility I'd guess would be the main complaint. This would put them at a disadvantage with all the players not wearing knee braces and hence being more mobile. But, what if it became mandatory for all players other than say kickers and punters to wear the exact same design of knee brace? That would protect their knees and if all are wearing them it would level the playing field so to speak. Tell me, why this idea would not work, or would it?

Pardon my "French!" - but that is a damned good question!!!!! If they were all equally 'penalized' by being forced to wear knee braces, then it would not effect game play so much except perhaps make it harder to get to 'terminal velocity' to slobberknock someone into next week. Big Whooptey Doo! If it save a player's career - I'm all for it!

Even if you believe what he said about "Not wanting to hit high"
Why couldnt he tackle him around the hips or thighs?

Why did he lead with his helmet instead of attempting to get his arms around Keller?

    He's a dumb piece of **** that's why.

And to sit back and defend because of league rules, as if it's a valid excuse is a joke. As if he's even been in the league long enough to master good tackling form. He's either really ignorant or malicious. Neither of the above is an excuse IMO.

The NFL would just make those hits illegal before requiring braces IMO.

Willie McGinest and Darren Sharper are really getting into this hit on NFLN.McGinest taking the "should have been a form tackle" argument, Sharper taking "only way to take a bigger man down is to go low" argument. It'll probably be on the main site tomorrow, just a heads up.

too bad there's an alternative way to go low that's equally if not more effective at ensuring the tackle while also not placing the injury risk of both players as high. Sharper is apparently an idiot who doesn't understand the difference between going low and going low recklessly, especially when the defender has sufficient time to react just as Swearinger did.

If an NFL safety can't execute a proper wrap-up tackle on an undersized, stationary TE [which includes wrapping up the feet/shins] without having to target the knees then he deserves to get run over by the ball carrier. period.

Did you watch the "discussion" or are you shooting from the hip? They talk about these very things, McGinest said something along the lines of these new players don't have the balls to square someone up normally any more.

I'm shooting from the hip based on your specific Sharper quote. I thought him saying "only way to take a bigger man down is to go low" was suggesting he was disagreeing with McGinest and supporting the way Swearinger approached his "tackle" of Keller.

I watched it. McGinest was totally right, and he was getting pissed off at Sharper because he kept interrupting while Willie was trying to talk.

How do you know that? If all of them are slowed down equally, who could ever tell?

Willie said the right way to do it for a defender in that situation would have been to hit the receiver in the ribs with your shoulder while wrapping him up at the same time.

I think the idea of the single bar face mask isn't that far off. The goal of football is to keep your opponent from scoring, not crippling him to the point where he'll never walk again or drink soup through a straw. I'm sorry, but this isn't Chuck Cecil's NFL anymore and anyone complaining that the game is being pussified can suck it. You stand out there and take that hit if you're such a bad ***. Forget the "inherent risk." That applies to injuries, normal injuries. Broken arms, legs, collar bones etc, can and should be expected. Hitting a guy low and destroying his lively hood or scrambling a guys brains so he can't remember who his kids are aren't inherent injuries that come with playing football. Make the pads smaller and give em one bar or no bar. You'll see those big hits from safeties stop when they don't have the padding to protect themselves. And it does go back to the coaching at the Pee Wee and Pop Warner level. I ref them. Most of these idiot coaches think they're coaching a team full of Super Bowl champs, when they should be happy the kids can stand up with the pads on. They don't teach proper tackling techniques. I can't tell you the number of kids I pull aside each game explaining to them to keep their heads up and not lead with the helmet. Football is a violent sport, no doubt. But we don't have to keep using that excuse as a reason to let guys knock the hell out of each other for no reason.

This news scrolling across the NFL channel ticker crushed my soul. I was really excited to see what Keller would do in this offense. He was what this team had been missing for years. Hopefully someone can fill the hole.

I think its a far stretch and a huge dream if anybody really believes Egnew or Simms could fill in the position and do a great job blocking and receiving.

He is going to be impossible to replace. 60-70 catches 800-900 yards wasn't unrealistic.

Now, you'll be lucky to get 30-40 and 500 yards out of the position and on top of that, it will make it tougher on the rest of the recievers, as you won't have the concern Keller brings to opposing defenses.

It's a tough loss for a team that can't afford any. Depressing is an understatement.
