Totally agree. They should treat this the same way as any other suspension, apply it during the regular season. This is what they do with conduct policy, PEDs etc.

I've talked about how amazing it is to have the dexterity, mental and physical, to switch positions at the highest level in college football that involves the athlete going to Qb, and then accomplish what he has in such a short period of time doing so, to be a first round pick, to start an NFL season, pretty amazing stuff, however, I'm not sure that sick athleticism is gonna translate to quickness and athletic precision within the pocket, what I'm trying to figure out is, what is keeping that athleticism from being engaged, is it an instinctual thing, where this is what he is from an individual play making ability, or are we seeing his athleticism in a doormat phase until his familiarity and sense in the pocket gets more exp.

@Edwerderespn NFL is considering substantial fine and regular-season suspension for Texans DE Antonio Smith, whose history also a factor. Player safety

Three seconds is when Cushing blew by Tannehill trying to get his facemask... Tannehill as on his 4th read at that time, and by that time, the Texans had committed seven men to the rush, including the late middle blitz. Thomas had Swearingen probably cussing because Thomas did not let up on him, and Sims had negated the WLB and had him in the middle of the Cluster???? in the middle. What I want to know is who Clabo went after when he peeled off to cover Tannehill's scramble. If this was after then Keller hit, I would have risked a primed, loaded and cocked forearm shiver to Swearingen's face mask. But that was me when I played the game. Now, I am innocent and pure of heart! [Lord, forgive me and fee......]

Tannehill couldn't have been on his fourth read, there were only 3 recievers in the pattern. Wallace / Gibson / Clay

And don't be silly, your seeing the play in slow motion, it was more like 5 -6 seconds from snap to Cushing blowing up the pocket.

hah... the preseason suspension really made no sense...Although I wouldn't have been surprised by that...(thinking Ritchie would be suspended for a regular season game or two instead :wink2:)

Per @AdamSchefter, the league will suspend Antonio Smith for both preseason games left and 1 regular season game. #Texans

I remember yelling at the TV on this play. Both for the club to the head and then the helmet swing. I was absolutely shocked that NEITHER were called penalties. Especially the helmet swing. The ref was right there and right after the swing ran to break it up. So he obviously saw the swing.

Now we all know Richie is not an innocent player in this, but still. There is NO place for swinging a helmet in football. If he connected on Richie's head he could have killed him. At the very least concussed him.

The punishment sounds appropriate to me.

The fact that it's a game suspension at all and not just a fine is a big deal. Guys get less punishment for getting arrested.

I think a 1-regular-game suspension is fair. I don't think Smith is a terminally dirty player. He's just a guy who lost his cool against Incognito, who he has a history with, and who is known as a guy who plays on both sides of the edge of 'legal'.

It looks like to me he looked right, center, right, was looking left when Cushing blew by at under 4 seconds. That was the point when Cushing passed him as Tannehill ducked... Now, my stopwatch doesn't have the .000 timer, and I don't start counting until after the 1st second has passed. So I have to graciously disagree with your assessment of the timing!

I timed the Cushing hit to Tanne's head at 3.5 seconds.

Stop watches depend on the person pushing the button. The Rev said it was just under 4 seconds when he did it. I corroborated his time by posting mine. I made a rude comment in response to a rude comment. You don't like it, put me on ignore, or don't make rude comments and expect me to just cower and take them with no response.

    Fair enough - I don't do ignore.

I timed it three times off the tape at live speed and you may be right I get 3.89 seconds.

Yeah, from the video, the snap occurs around the 4 second mark and Cushing is leaping onto Tannehill for the blow to the head by the 8 second mark.

Alas, the good old days are gone when players would put wood screws in his helmet facing out, the way some players used to back in the 60s and 70s to keep guys like Fred Williamson, aka "The Hammer", from delivering blows to the head.

Since I have not seen the three receivers in their routes at that time, I have no way to know if Tannehill missed an opportunity to hit one of the receivers with a pass or not. That is crucial. Somebody might have been coming open at 3+ seconds, but by then, Tannehill has a charging blitzer at a constant bearing for his face and rapidly decreasing range who is leaping - which is going to take away a clean shot at any pass except a 'sidearm holy crap' pass to the right, which unless it is lucky enough to get anywhere near whoever is running a pattern on that side of the field will draw a flag for intentional grounding. As it is, Tannehill manages to avoid Cushing's rush while breaking free from what was a blow to the head and very near a facemask, and run for the first down, which effectively negates the all out blitz. That to me looks like a heads-up athletic play. I don't see any real need to harshly criticize Tannehill for this play - sometimes the play just breaks down, and you make whatever yardage you can by whatever means you can. One has to wonder if this were Aaron Rodgers, Colin Kapwhatevernik, Mike Vick, or RGIII making this play whether laurel wreathes and tickertape might not be raining down him on the forum.

I understand where your coming from - Nobody is cursing Tannehill for his athletic ability.

All they were saying is he missed the blitz read and held the ball like a gumbo and thats what caused the need for his athletic heroics. (Which if Cushing had his Wits would have merely been surviving the hit.)

He's young - He is so slow reading defenses it takes him 2 hours to watch 60 minutes of film.

That is all - He's ours and were stuck with him.

What cracks me up about all of this... is the ref... in clear view of the Incognito/Smith melee, and in clear view of Tanny taking a headshot... just stands by idly watching like he's just watching paint dry or something. Unbelievable how there's not a penalty for either incident on that play. That just shows you right there how incompetent the officials can be.

kinda fuzzy but to me it looks like he was watching the play. I think the ref figured the play was done bc piuncy and cogs were on Smith so far out of the way.

BTW, I wonder what Pouncey was saying to Smith.

that's a double edged sword because then others would be upset because he didn't stay in the pocket and wait for the play to develop. It's no win at this point in his career. IMHO he made a positive out of what could very well been a big negative.
