Why? IMO, at this point the only reason he hasn't seen as many snaps has been due to injury. He played quite a bit against Houston. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if he's a heavy contributor week 1 and a starter by season's end.
Jesse Agler @finsjesse 1m Dolphins reportedly release Richard Marshall. Definitely a bit of a surprise to me
IMO Taylor will be starting opposite Grimes and Patterson/Carroll in the slot until Davis is ready for the slot.
With that 3-cone, that's where he should be playing, he just needs to tighten up and that comes with game experience.
I'm curious why are people so confident in Jamar Taylor after he's only played in one preseason game and practiced for maybe 1.5 weeks now? I'm not saying I disagree or that Nolan Carroll/ Will Davis should or shouldn't start, but there is a lot of confidence in this thread for a player who hasn't really even played yet.
I thought the same, to me this is something of a mistake as patterson was the one with the no fault contract, now we can get hit twice if things go wrong this year.
Don't you love how he says it's an "admission of defeat" but "perhaps" they will use Jamar Taylor, the 54th overall pick, opposite? Both sound like guesswork to me, but of course the Ireland bit is presented as a factual statement. No one knew that Richard Marshall was going to have a season-ending back injury last year, but at least Ireland did something about it and drafted two rookies.
If players are telling Darlington that Marshall wasn't playing well, then this makes all the sense in the world. Who would people rather want playing? An untested rookie with a low base salary or a struggling vet making too much money?
For me, I'd base it purely off of scheme fit and what Taylor displayed in college. I think it's somewhat telling he got quite a bit of playing time against Houston coming right off the injury. I also think it could be telling that a lot of his snaps came in the slot.
I liked what I saw of him in college. He hasnt played because hes been dinged but he can run, has ball skills, good awareness and can tackle. A few things need work but I never felt Marshall was anything more then a slot CB so I guess I dont see how Taylor cant be at least what Marshall was? Statistically speaking Marshall was never good anyway except as a safety in Arizona.
I wouldn't pick someone. Listen I like Will Davis a lot. I liked him a lot coming out of Utah State. I've liked him during preseason through the ups and downs. I'd like him to succeed in a big way. However for me I still don't think there's enough information to make that decision between Jamar Taylor/ Will Davis/ Nolan Carroll, which is why I was curious about people's thoughts on Jamar Taylor. Many are advocating for him despite him having very limited practice and game reps. I don't think that's bad or the wrong decision, it's just interesting. I think I need to see Taylor play another preseason game or two before having near enough confidence to advocate for him starting, the same for Will Davis. More data is necessary to be sure.
Totally fair. I think Patterson is going to be the starter come week 1 against the Browns opposite Grimes. I just think that with this scheme and what Taylor brings to the table, based on his college play, he'll be starting by the end of the year. Call me crazy, but I think the two picks in the 2013 class that will end up starting the most games and playing well for Miami will be Jamar Taylor and Dallas Thomas (not counting Sturgis as the kicker). I don't know if they'll both be starting at any point this year - I think Taylor will - but I'd bet they'll both be starting come 2014.
Not surprised or disappointed. Never should've been signed in the first place but that's an El Jeffe item for another day. Let Will Davis play. He has ball skills that can't be taught. He can learn technique. I'll live with a few big plays being given up
Aaaaaand there it is lmao...I was wondering when we'd put the cherry on top of a pathetically bad 2012 free agency for Ireland. my condolences to Mr Clean, I know he loved Marshall...only God knows why, he wasn't any good and a pretty dumb signing to begin with.
You're acting like: 1. Richard Marshall has played well in Miami. 2. Richard Marshall has played in Miami.
Tbh I didn't think RJ Stanford did too bad last year when he got PT. Not starter material, but much better than I expected from him.
@JeffDarlington Another Dolphins source says Marshall decision was especially tough because he's a great locker room guy. But again, cost > ability > need. @AdamHBeasley Between Carpenter and Marshall, the Dolphins lopped about $5M off their cap. Unless they go buy a tight end, it'll roll over to next year.
Patterson has always been the better CB of the two and $4.5M for a nickel CB too much. I'm not surprised at all.
Bottom line, Patterson won the battle, I think he's the quicker more talented corner, we have two rooks that have a lot of potential, and Marshall's contract is to big to be the fifth guy, live with Nolan, their pretty similar, and he pays great special teams.
Honestly I'm just waiting for ck, Disgustipate, or rafael to tell me how to feel about this. Depending on whose opinion I read first, I will take it as my own and regurgitate the sentiment praying that no one asks me to justify my statements.
Obviously we don't know the full story, but it reads like a standard salary and space move. Veteran isn't playing up to his pay grade, with two vets in front of him and a vet and two pups behind him. And you generally aren't keeping six healthy corners. If Taylor ends up starting Week 1, then we've got quite a player because that's quite a leap to make. He'll have essentially climbed over three veterans and a fellow rookie whose made some noise -- in 3 weeks time. Personally I'm not counting on the kids. 'Hope' is a better word e.g. I hope they can contribute in Year 1. It'll be Grimes & Patterson followed by the youngins battling for time. I expect Carroll to be the third guy right now, but I'm sure the coaches hope these kids will rise up. I think 3rd corner is a more realistic/attainable target for Taylor, though it may take some time before he gets there. Davis obviously needs seasoning as well, but he's showing you he's got skills. OT: dream world would have Marshall returning as safety depth.
Patterson will start I'm sure, your looking at nickel and dime..Patterson won the competition, 5 mill for a third corner when you have potential with your rooks doesn't make sense.
Clean is the only other guy I knew who saw some things from Patterson last year that flashed to the point that he could win the job, I think he would tell you best man won..
My concern, would we be better off with Carroll as a 1 yr placeholder or Marshall. Marshall would have been the better choice, cap space in 2014 means absolutely nothing at this point, now we stick Carroll on the boundary, he of the zero ball awareness and indifferent tackling ability.
The problem is Patterson has never been a good perimeter guy; always been better in the slot. Either way I dont care about Marshall; his signing made me sick from the get go. Not one of Irelands finer moments.
FYI, I think the last lime of the rotoworld blurb nailed it....Marshall could end up in Cleveland. They need DB's and he had his best year under Ray Horton in Arizona. And keep in mind we play Cleveland in week 1. Its a perfect storm for Marshall.
I feel very comfortable with Patterson as the starting boundary CB. It's Carroll who I can't believe is still on the team but he is cheap.
Sounds like my opinion differs from most... I thought he did well last year after very little time with the team.
