In 2011, he did pretty well for a #2 corner, IMO. His coverage snaps per reception were top 3. Yards per coverage snap he was 8th among corners. Cover snaps per target he was 2nd. Run stop pct he was the best corner in the league. Last years isn't anything to judge him by considering he was hurt in the 2nd game and played two more games that way.
I don't want him cut because he is a good special teams player. I just don't like him as a top 4 corner. Every now and then he does come up with a nice play but overall, not a fan.
Its not. I pointed out at least 7 free agent starters. I expect Taylor/Davis to leapfrog Nolan at some point. We could do a lot worse then Nolan as a 5th.
Carroll ain't done squat to show he deserves more snaps at corner. Taylor you may like to get him more snaps but is he even healthy yet? The timing was terrible on this move. Ok, if they only ever intended to keep one of Marshall or Patterson, but the smart thing to do would be make your choice at the final cut to 53.
I hope our safety's don't have that communication problem they had last year between the CB's. I believe Clemmons and Nolan Carroll together can probably do the job of one good CB or Safety.
B/c it is a win now league, we will lose FA's either way, so why weaken the team this year when you have to accept the fact we are losing guys next yr anyway?
How is it Marshall was no better than Nolan last year and now that we cut him its like we cut a respectable starter. The guy was going to make nearly $5 million yet probably be leapfrogged by Taylor & Davis at some point.
Hmm, Stanford, Carroll, or a Rook, really do not know as no one has paid any attention to Stanford afaik. All I know about him is he is leading us in tackles during the preseason.
Watching Carroll play corner makes me long for the days of William Judson, Paul Lankford, and even JB Brown was better than Carroll.
Perhaps Nolan doesn't even stick. Maybe they keep Wilson as the #5 since he's a special teamer and has worked corner/safety. Grimes/Patterson/Davis & Taylor/Wilson. That's 5.
This is the same GM that let Davis/Smith play as rookies when Will Allen went down. He's going to throw them into the fire. I could see our 5th guy rotated...but those guys are solid special reamers and know the system.
Yeah, but Ireland doesn't decide who plays and who doesn't. That's Philbin's job. I'm sure both Davis and Taylor will see plenty of playing time but they're going to want other guys capable of playing the position as well in case the rookies play like rookies.
Not bad. His run defense is a +0.8. His overall is -0.4. He's been throw at 8 times and allowed 3 catches for 28 yards and a 47 passer rating.
Besides Stanford, one other backup corner who has quietly posted good numbers is Julian Posey. They play him a lot. He has the most snaps of any corner. 5th most on defense. His overall PFF rating is 6th on our defense. They have been wanting to get a good look at him for some reason. Off topic a little, but AJ Francis has the best overall and best pass rush rating of anyone on our defense.
Shortsighted is shortsighted. It's really important we finish 9-7 this year instead of 7-9. $10m in cap is no small thing and the fact that no one can make a convincing argument that Marshall is distinguishable from Nolan and the rookies, says it all.
It appears the #3 corner in the nickel and dime packages is actually going to be Jimmy Wilson... for now.
It's interesting that Omar has this move only saving us like $1.5m this year, while Armando says the move saves us $4.6m. They are both wrong It's $3.3m... roughly.
Yes it is, I'd rather have a winning season, our what, 3rd since 04, then to save "Cap Space" to resign players from a losing team. The goal is winning, the secondary goal is managing the cap, not the other way around.
After thinking about this all night.. come to the same initial conclusion. The timing is strange. It's not like the Dolphins couldn't carry his cap # between now and the 53 man cuts. I hate to say it but what if one of our starting corners goes down with an injury in the next couple of games. Don't give me that "we're doing the veteran a favor" crap by cutting him now so he can catch on elsewhere. After the money we paid him, I should think we've done him enough favors to last at least two more weeks. And believe me, I'm in favor of cutting one of Patterson/Marshall for cap reasons at the RIGHT time. I wouldn't have done it in this past offseason, opting rather to wait until the 53 cuts to see that our rookies have stepped up. Now we have to hope that one of them can supplant Jimmy Wilson as the #3 corner by week 2 of the regular season. Maybe we are going to sign Grimes to a long term extension sooner rather than later. Maybe we need the cap room for something else as well.
Well, one, the 7-9 9-7 thing was hyperbole. Richard Marshall is not worth two wins. I agree that winning is important, but hanging on to a fringe-average corner that's easily replaced in the name of winning when significant savings can be had (i.e resources to upgrade your football team) is the very definition of shortsighted. It's the equivalent of wanting to sign Lamar Odom in 2009 to finish 4th in the Eastern Conference when you have Lebron staring you in the face in 2010. Granted, that's an extreme example but an applicable one.
I love Grimes, but I wouldn't sign him to any long term extension until I'm absolutely sure he can stay healthy. I actually like Patterson more than most. He's nothing special but as a slot corner he can hold his own. He's really not a bad player. Jimmy Wilson I have in the same category as Nolan Carroll. And that's the "meh" category.
Yeah.. on the other hand, it's not lost on me that Marshall is released the week after Jamar Taylor makes his debut. Taylor did impress me.
I don't dislike this move (I think he sucks) but I hated both the trades you mentioned. Especially the Marshall trade. Made no sense. Thankfully Philbin's offense doesn't need a number one, *wink wink*, and 60 million bucks later... Good thing we got Egnew and Will Davis though....
There's a reason they drafted Taylor in the 2nd round. He has the ability and I think we'll all see it once he is good to go health wise.
RT @davehydesports: The three top CBs Dolphins went into 2012 with are gone: Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Richard Marshall. Talent evaluation is lesson in all.
Let the rookies play - As much as most of you can't admit it, we are not winning this season anyhow. Game up all the Rooks and hopefully next year we can add to this mix and finally make a run at something.
What do you mean "not winning" this season? Maybe not the Super Bowl, but we can win... Our defense is top 10-5. And our offense still has a ton of potential to grow.
