Ummm...how about the random person here and every pundit and expert the NFL has.

Ron Jaworski, who is about a brilliant as it comes when your talking football, has us losing.

I understand the FAN-attic optimism however, and I've learned to deal with it. Doesn't change anything in the end, this schedule and this team won't have a winning season.

Going in the right direction for a change, certainly not there yet.

Ron Jaworski also had John Beck making multiple probowls.

I don't have us winning 10 games either but I'd like to see us play a few downs before I say anything with conviction.

And everyone had us going 4-12 last year too. Not only did we not go 4-12, we were two missed FGs from 9-7, with hartline and bess as our 1 and 2 as our WRs. We've upgraded in almost every area.

And Jaws is hardly the authority you think he is. C'mon man.

The Dolphins and Disgustipate disagree, then. That is, if Disgustipate had Carrol in his top 5.

Ok - Jaws is probably a better X's and O's guy then he is anything else, but I still don't see this team winning this year. I see it as an improved team but with the schedule that is nothing short of difficult, all the new peices and components, the downgrade on the O-line, an unproven RB, A QB that isn't ready yet combined with new recievers who he hasn't worked with more than one preseason.... This team needs to play together, All the Rooks need playing time, our QB needs more experience...

I won't even mention that Dion Jordan won't even be a factor till next year... as much as I hate it, I'm not getting my hopes up for a team that isn't there yet.

Some fans thrive in these situations... When the team gives up on a player they've harped on... It's their little victories.

Seriously, people on the boards have been surmising it's either Patterson or Marshall this season.

Before camp I really thought they'd keep Marshall. And to the point of the 'attitude problem' rumors about Patterson, when I watched an interview with PAtterson on the Finsiders awhile ago I thought to myself "Jesus, this guy seems like he's already given up at some level, and thinks he is on the outside looking in... talking about 'their' system instead of 'our system' for example". But clearly something has changed, because he stayed and Marshall went.

From a what-I've-heard-and-seen of each perspective, I'm happier to see Patterson here than Marshall. My hope is that Jamar plays well enough to take over as our #2 corner by the time we play our first Patriots game.

    My biggest questions are:
    1) Who will play slot if Patterson is boundary?
    2) If Patterson is moved to the slot, we may see Nolan Carroll outside.
    3) I don;t think Nolan Carroll is as bad as he once was, nor as good as you would hope he could be.

Will DAvis doesn;t even figure into the dicsussion for me in these thop three spots. WAY too far to go in his game before I trust him nearly that much. HE's an INT machine... and a missed tackle machine, and deked out by playaction or a double move and burnt for a TD... machine.

I'd rather have him playing corner in any capacity, than I would Carroll.

Will Davis should figure into the discussion. He is pure ball hawk and I can't think of anyone better for nickel and dime packages.

Davis isn't ready for base D and the run support that comes with that role, but he is going to be an OUTSTANDING nickel and dime corner for us.

Sure Ball Hawks get beat but he needs experience and he'll be getting it this season.

    Good Riddance Marshall.

I hesitate to post this because I don't want to derail the thread. Maybe we could make a thread in the Other NFL forum and discuss it there but:

The Bears averaged 314 yards of offense per game and scored 31 offensive TD's without Marshall
With Marshall, the Bears averaged 310 yards per game and scored 32 offensive TD's.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins averaged 317 yards of offense and scored 32 offensive TD's with Marshall
And averaged 311 yards and 31 TD's without Marshall.

So what exactly did the Bears trade two 3's for?

Yes for dime. But nickel sees the field WAY too much and he makes WAY too many mistakes (at this juncture).

By end of season perhaps, but I think his brand of mistakes is not technical so much as mentality and personality.

Oh. Just remembered Clemons also. So 8 free agent starters....plus if our young guys don't step up we will need a starting TE to.

This team is going to need every $$ it can get.

You could boil it down to the essential IMO. Without Marshall, the bears made the playoffs, with Marshall they did not.

As for topic of this thread.

Holy **** guys, 11 pages about cutting Richard Marshall? The guy sucked.

Terrible example. Odom fit as the MLE. He would have been at the expense of Haslem or Miller. Not Lebron.

Sometimes you got to take one step back to take two steps forward. They needed picks, and a culture change thus the trades of Davis/Marshall...as far as the other Marshall, the guy was not good, bad signing. I give Ireland credit for not being stubborn, and washing his hands of the mistake.

I am so sick of hearing people say that optimism is not realistic. Where does this negativism get such good publicity? The offense is better than last year coming out of the gates, even now, even after Keller's injury. The D is far and away better. How does that transition to a losing season? I think we win 10 games this year, and run some upsets early, including the Colts, and Ravens.

Not sure why people like ****ting on Carroll so much, his performance last year as a starter for a guy who is supposed to end up #4 or #5 on the depth chart is a good thing.

The goal is to build a winning program. Managing the cap is essential to that effort. Either we trust the people charged with that responsibility to do the right thing or we do not.

Jamar better stay healthy this season.

So when will the act of giving kudos to jeffe for cutting bait on his mistakes become ridiculously monotonous?

    Exactly.

Richard Marshall gets $6.1 million for four games

I think a good way to look at it is these 'found' funds might be directly allocated toward Brent Grimes next season.

If you think you have two rooks that can play in this league and contribute, and you have a vet coming off a serious injury who is the third or fourth highest paid player on your team, and if the vet player is cut you can prorate some of that salary for for next year, or an extension, or adding a player later in camp, then cut me mick, cut me.

It's a good thing you aren't mentioning that, because then I'd have to point out he was a factor in the snaps he already got. I wouldn't even mention it was preseason because football is football. Not to mention the practice snaps he has dominated at.

Funny, I didn't see anyone really beefing that hard that he's released. I actually see many of us who felt Mashall at CB was questionable at best very not surprised by the move.

do i calculate that right ? 10 million savings for marshall this and next year and patterson will be 5 million savings next year so we looking at another 15 million in total that can be used to sign grimes to a long term deal ? with the hope that davis and taylor will be ready next year

Look, he wasn't a good signing and it didn't work out, but enough of this crap. He got injured last year, these things happen when a free agent is signed then injured. There are things that you can blame Ireland about, but the fact Marshall was injured and only played 4 games is not one of them.
