Oh hey there goes Carl Crawford whining about the Red Sox again. I'd hate to have been his friends in junior high after he got dumped for the first time, he probably still talks about that too.

Good article on Beckett and the "Punto Trade" which will be 1 year old on Sunday:

    http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/b...almost-one-year-after-leaving-boston-josh-bec

Another good article on the trade, which right now has worked out for both teams:

    http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/b...onsider-alternatives-where-would-red-sox-be-w

Key quote in the 2nd article:

Internally, the Sox asked themselves if they might want to wait until the offseason to see if they could revisit talks with the Dodgers while opening it up to other clubs. But, the team felt that it didn't want to jeopardize a shot at developing a clear path forward.

"We decided that if this was something we wanted to do," said Cherington, "that we would try to do it and not risk waiting."

Big week on the west coast for the Sox. I'll sign up for 4-2 any day of the week. Again the main thing is the starting pitching was really really good, even the games the Sox lost, they easily could have won if they had any offense. Bogaerts continued to look good yesterday, doesn't look overmatched at the plate and knows to take his pitches and wait for mistakes.

Also another prospect name to keep an eye on is Mookie Betts. Now just because his name is great (and really with a name like that don't you have to be a MLB star) but he's a 20 year old in High A and hitting .325/.393/.546 with more walks than K's.

Good road trip, nice seeing Xander out there.

I had never heard of Mookie Betts till today. Maybe Pearl Jam will name an album after him.

He's a legit prospect, not just having a flukey season, should be in all of the Sox top 10 prospect lists this offseason.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Victorino deal when it was first announced, but he's been incredible in RF defensively and when he's been healthy he's been an asset at the plate. I do wonder if, because of injuries, he finally gives up on batting LHed since he's always been a better RHH anyway. But it's pretty impressive how well he's hitting RHPers batting RHed.

Again when you consider a qualifying offer is now in the 13M range it is. Contracts, especially for average players are increasing rapidly. Which is why right now the Pedroia extension looks good.

I know Anthony Rizzo, for example, hasn't had a great year and some people knocked giving him an extension, but even though he's only a 1.5 WAR player this year in terms of dollar figures it ends up being $7.4 million yet he's only making 500k this season. Even if he improves slightly each year that extension will probably end up looking good when it's over.

I admit. I thought this was a terrible signing. Thought he was done at the plate. We will see how the last two seasons play out, still could end up looking like a not a great signing. But so far it's been a good signing.

People say he had a bad year between his injured wrist, the pressure he put on himself in a contract year and then the trade to LA really affected him. Who knows. I didn't think he was done at the plate, since he still hit LHPers well, but I thought he'd probably end up being a high priced platoon player with above average D.

Hey a winning streak! And the perfect time too with TB, the Yankees and Baltimore struggling. I don't want to get greedy tonight since we're playing with house money but it would be nice to sweep the O's consider how they had their way with the Sox for the past 3 years.

Matt Barnes is being promoted to Triple A. Although he had a so-so year numbers wise (except his K per 9 which was very good) hopefully he can use it as learning experience and build on it. But man the 2014 Triple A rotation is going to be Ranuado, Barnes, Webster and probably De La Rosa and maybe Workman if they still view him as a SPer. Talk about a treat for PawSox fans and also speaks to the depth the Sox have at SP compared to previous years, and that's not even talking about Henry Owens who will probably make the jump to Triple A by mid-season assuming all goes well.

Deal. How about you throw in some minor prospects like JBJ and Bogearts, maybe a few more. Just to sweeten the deal so I don't lose the rest of the 37 Marlins fans.

I will throw in Brock Holt (great name), Ryan Lavarnway and Jeremy Hazelbaker. That should be enough.

Seriously though I wouldn't trade JBJ, Bogaerts, Owen plus for Stanton. As good as Stanton is, his injures scare me enough to stay away from trading top multiple prospects for him. Bogaerts, in my opinion, should be nearly untouchable as a young SS with a plus bat.

Now if the Sox resign Ellsbury for some reason, I don't think they will but IF, then I wouldn't mind possibly packaging JBJ, 1 of our top pitching prospects out of Ranuado, Barnes, RDLR, Webster, Henry and some lesser prospects for Stanton. But I would think the Marlins would want more.

I wonder if the Sox offered JBJ, Henry, Cecchini and one of the Ranuado/Barnes/RDLR/Webster/Workman if the Marlins would bite.

Yeah the next two weeks are tough with the Tigers, Yankees, Rays and Yankees. I'm still not in love with the idea of going to Colorado for two games in the last week of the season, thankfully they have days off before and after they get back for some strange reason.

The key is they have 4 days off in September so they can line their pitching up virtually anyway they want. Baltimore only has 1 day off for the rest of the year, the Yankees have 2 and TB has 1 day off, followed by 20 straight games before the season ends, which is a huge disadvantage even with the rosters being able to expand in Sept.

Rosters can expand starting on Sunday. So it's probably a good time to talk about some of the players that will get called up (maybe not right away due to the PawSox being in the playoffs).

    Obvious call ups:

    Hitters:
Brock Holt - as the Sox currently don't have a real back up at 2B
JBJ - can play all 3 OF positions and well, definitely see him as a defense replacement/pinch runner
Quintin Berry - Sox just traded Clayton Mortenson for him and Farrell mentioned him as strictly a pinch runner since the Sox have little to no speed on the bench, it would mean the Sox would need to clear a spot for him on the 40 man.
    Ryan Lavarnway - 3rd catcher

    Pitchers:
    Pedro Beato
    RDLR
    Jose De La Torre
    Brayan Villarreal
    Alex Wilson
Need to give these guys looks to see if they can contribute anything to a possible playoff spot

    On the fence:
Dan Butler - not sure if the Sox would want to carry 4 catchers but Butler has done pretty well in Triple A this year and is a better defensive catcher than Lavarnway
Allen Webster - If they need a 6th or 7th starter, of course depends on if Buchholz comes back strong
Steven Wright - Would be used in a blow out only

Looking at the 40 man, they will need to clear another spot for Buchholz when he comes back, so I'm guessing Bard gets put on the 60 day DL or DFA'ed and Synder is DFA.

Again you won't see all these guys up at once due to the PawSox being in the playoffs but I think on Sept 1st you definitely see Holt and 2 or 3 of the RPers just for added depth, possibly a 3rd catcher just in case. The Sox might want JBJ to continue to get consistent at bats before the minor league season ends. Either way that bench is going to be crowded by the end of Sept.

Red Sox are the first team since the 1993 Braves to have their pitchers allow 3 or fewer runs in 10 straight games. Kind of makes you mad they're only 7-3 in that span.

Sox DFA Daniel Bard. I wonder if he'll clear waivers of not. He's been an absolute disaster but also has an option left. I could see a team take a flier on him.

Anyway Sox made a trade for INF John McDonald yesterday clearly for defensive replacement purposes. Didn't give up anything useful for him.

Sox are calling up Brandon Snyder, Ryan Lavarnway, Quintin Berry and Rubby De La Rosa today. Farrell said the majority of call ups will happen after the PawSox season ends.

Things I didn't think I would hear in a couple of yeards in 2010-11. "The Red Sox DFA Daniel Bard to make room for Quintin Berry."

For the Sox to win 95 games they need to go 13-11 in their last 24 games. If they simply play .500 ball the rest of the way they will win 94.

Well like you pointed out he will get a bunch of days off the next couple of weeks. Hopefully along with setting up the pitching those last 5 vs the Rockies and O's should be games they can rest others with the expanded rosters. To early to say I can't wait for the playoffs?

Next time people say pitcher's wins/losses matter take a look at John Lackey's 2013 season and maybe also his 2011 season too. It's kind of crazy to think that in a year where he has a 3.22 ERA he might not "win" the same number of games in a year where he had a 6.41 ERA.

Great win last night, Lester was awesome. If he pitches like that and Clay is healthy, the Sox will be strong.

Yeah Buchholz really is the key to this whole thing. If he comes back healthy the Sox are pretty deep with Lester, Buchholz, Lackey and Peavy as the starting 4. It would be great if Dempster was able to step up and be a solid pen arm too.

I would be nice if the Sox can take this game tonight and win another series.

That's a tough playoff rotation if Buchholz is healthy.
