You're taking it on faith he can. He hasn't done it yet. The Town is the opposite of that.

You don't believe he can do it after this tour de force performance?

Yeah, silly me for thinking a very good actor can play a role well. And I do have faith in Affleck being able to do a good job with the part because I've seen his movies after he got serious about acting, he's damn good now.

Just because an actor hasn't played a similar role in a movie before doesn't mean he can't. Hugh Jackman was busy doing musicials before he became Wolverine. Heath Ledger was never a psycho bad guy before he played The Joker. Bale never played the good guy with a heart of gold before he was Batman. The list goes on and on.

Seriously though, I asked this question earlier but when was the last time, in recent years, that an actor/actress was cast in a role that the majority of fans hated the choice and those fans ended up being right?

Paul's busy Pagan. Haven't you heard...he's bringing Pee Wee Herman back to the big screen. A much bigger story then a new batman ;p

Plus he couldn't be in another Batman movie since he had that cameo in Batman Returns.

Ryan Reynolds. Green Lantern. Seth Rogen. Green Hornet. Sorry but you walked into that one ;p

Most people loved the Reynolds as Green Lantern casting choice though. The movie being bad had more to do with script then his acting. That project was doomed before it started as WB had way too many writers working on rewrites even while the movie was shooting. I wouldn't say Reynolds was great in the movie by any means but I don't think someone else could have saved that film.

As for Green Hornet, never seen it but it looked awful. So you got me there. But did anyone even care enough about it to get worked up over it?

Ugh. This sucks for so many reasons.

    1. No name or up and coming actors, with a few exceptions, are almost always a better choice for super hero roles.

    2. Ben Afleck had his shot in a super hero movie. No do-overs in Hollywood.

    3. He'll be a terrible Batman.

I could go on and on. They blew it. I'll watch it. But they blew it. It's going to be terrible.

Its not silly of you. I'm just saying that he hasn't ever shown to be able to play this kind of role before. I've never seen anything from him to imply he can. I explained he's played the opposite of that very well, and gave The Town as an example. You thought that wasn't the opposite of Batman. It is the opposite which is why I said he could do it. He has not ever in his life successfully displayed the necessary range for me to feel comfortable with this. His best parts came in Good Will, The Town, & Argo. All characters he played very similarly and all characters he either wrote and/or directed. (That makes a difference.) Matt Damon on the other hand could totally handle the acting part. I hope Ben knocks it out of the park though.

    As far as your question:
    - Everyone in the 2 Fantastic 4 movies
    - Nic Cage in both Ghost Riders
    - Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern
    - Everyone other than Hugh Jackman in the first stand alone Wolverine movie
    - Elecktra
    - The first Hulk movie
    - The second Punisher movie
    - The Green hornet
    - And......Ben Affleck in Daredevil.

Really because outside of Wolverine, Smoking Aces and Van Wilder I tend to find no love for Ryan Reynolds at all. I especially saw a load of vitrol at him being Green Lantern. He's pretty hated on as an actor.

It's hard to find a no name or up and coming actor that could fit into the casting requirement of being a 40's season veteran Batman.

Affleck did Daredevil over 10 years ago, he's a better actor today then he was then. Again Chris Evans was in Fantastic Four and was cast as Captain America and did a pretty good job with that role. Why can't people have do overs?

We'll see if he's good or bad in that role.

Yes the majority of Green Lantern fans liked the casting choice because he had Hal Jordan's characteristics.

I guess we'll have to wait and see about whether Affleck will be good or not. Hopefully he does well for obvious reasons.

I guess I should have been clearer with my question as I was referring to more recent run of movies but that's my bad. I honestly can't remember what the public opinion was on most of these movies (mostly because they were C level comics to begin with or people just didn't care about the movie anyway like Elecktra) but I guess it's not shocking that most of these movies were bad to awful. However, and I'm sure you'd agree, just because the movie itself was bad doesn't mean the casting choice was bad or people hated it. I believe people liked the Cage/Ghost Rider casting choice originally for example.

Funny, when Michael Keaton was cast as the first batman the same sort of disbelief happened.

That said, not in love with this choice, Afleck seems to be the forever high strung Frat Boy in film, I'm not seeing him playing the dark, brooding, Batman character and making it work.

I didnt like the news at first, but I am willing to wait and see how it turns out. I think the crossover itself it a terrible idea though.

Oh people HATED the Keaton choice, it the internet was around back then people would have caused it to break. And before that they hated Reeve getting picked as Superman because he came over some soap operas.

I think the crossover itself is a terrible idea too but willing to give it a shot. I still think it's a mistake and they should keep Batman seperate from the other superheroes.

If the rumors are true, and Lex Luthor is involved in the story, I think Affleck will do a good job as playboy Bruce Wayne. Affleck is believably smart, charming, charismatic. His interactions with Lex will be good. As Batman? Is it really a leap for Affleck to lower his voice and fight? It's not as if he's the star of the film. It's still superman's story.

    I'm good with Affleck.

And they were correct. I found it a little hard to watch Michael Keaton stand at the edge of a building and hold a grown man out in front of him off the ledge. Was kind of hard to swallow Mr. Mom having the upper body strength to do that. Aside from the fact that almost every one of the Joker's henchmen was larger than Batman, and the one big black dude was basically kicking the **** out of him until he hit his head on the bell.

Sorry man, but Billy Blaze was an awful Batman.

I've actually heard that this Superman/Batman movie might not be a direct sequel to MoS now. It might just be a straight up Superman/Batman story. But we should find out in the coming weeks/months for sure.

While you have a point and agree with you, especially the physical stuff, the movie was a freaking huge hit making over 411 million at the box office (which is impressive now but in 1989 was almost unheard of) and 100s of millions more with merchandise. I don't think anyone at WB regretted casting Keaton.

Keaton wasn't a great Batman but was a really good Bruce Wayne.

How good this movie and Affleck as Batman are probably depends a lot more on the script than Affleck's abilities. As awesome as Christian Bale is, he couldn't have made Batman and Robin a good movie, or even a less terrible one. Goyer and Snyder are the ones we should worry about.

somehow I sense some dips##t WB executive coming in and encouraging the idea of bringing in a hot star like Affleck to bring in a bigger crowd and make more money off the non-comic book crowd.

If that happened I'd nibble on the business end of a shotgun.

Casting Ben Afleck as Batman says to me the Directors are trying to win a "make a Batman worse than Batman & Robin" contest.

Oh absolutely. Try going back and reading the old The Dark Knight, TDKR or Man of Steel threads on this site. People lost their crap about some of the casting choices and decisions. Definitely funny in retrospect.

But hey if Affleck sucks in the role I will be the first one to admit I was wrong but it's kind of funny to see the kind of hate he's getting for things he did over 10 years ago. It's like people forget how good he's been the past few years.

He's a good actor. Now I'm just worried about the direction of Batman. If he's written we'll, Afleck will deliver. I just hope they don't do another Batman who's trying to get out of being Batman. And PLEASE no goofy accents or voices ala Bale.
