How worried should we be about Charles Clay being our starting tight end?

Discussion in 'Miami Dolphins Forum' started by Paul 13, Aug 25, 2013.

  1. After one game?? He has been this bad since he got here. He is a TE hybrid that can't block or catch, and runs some of the worse routes I have ever seen from a player who isn't a rookie. I have never seen what people see in him. I don't want him on the team.

  2. How much more evidence to you need. He has been here doing the same thing for 3 years.

This has been my biggest beef with Ireland. He has not drafted a WR or Tight End in the first or second rounds since he's been here. Every time he's added to the receiver pool it's been via free agency like Mike Wallace,
trade like Brandon Marshall or by drafting in the third or fourth round like Hartline and Egnew and try to train them up. We are pretty thin on talent. After Wallace. Hartline and Gibson the pickings are slim and the TE situation is worse.

I think our best move at this point is to trade for or pickup a veteran off of the waiver wire.

A lot of people seem to really like Sims. I think he could be a good player, esp as a blocking TE. But I don't see him ever becoming the same caliber a pass catcher as a Keller. Keep him on the roster...he will play a key role esp with a suspect o-line, at times. However, you HAVE to bring in another seam threat. Tanny and Keller clicked together, and it will only make the offense more dynamic.

As long as they open with a two TE set and there is a Moeaki/Harbor style player on the other side of the O-line, I'm good with that.

I think Sims can provide us with Fasano type production this season. He won't get as many catches b/c we'll probably go more 3 wide, but he can be another big target in the short zones and in the redone. I think he has more wiggle and can develop into a slightly better seam threat down the line, but is unlikely to ever be our answer at TE. I'd love a TE option to shake loose somewhere but if it doesn't then I think our seam threats this year will have to come from Gibson and maybe a few from Egnew/Sims.

The coaches seem to want to utilize Sims for his blocking, but I think they're over-looking his potential as a pass catcher. He says he can do it all and I think he can, with a lot of upside. Hope we see something from him this week. He might not be a Keller, but if we can get Fasano type production, I'd be happy with that.

I dont think we need to be worried at all about Charles Clay being our starting TE because I dont think he will be starting past week 1. Hes not very consistent and never has been. Just a matter of time before Sims takes the job. Clay is a nice niche player, he is not, nor should he ever be thought of as a long term starter on a team that thinks it should make the playoffs

in a starting role, i need more evidence, he also scored some impressive TD's last year against Indy and even more important against the seahwaks

Hope you're right. Clay makes some nice plays, but he's very inconsistent and always has been.

FYI, in the 15 minutes of practice today, that is open to the media, clay was still the starting TE

A lot of love for Sims when all I've seen from him are horrible stiff hips in the passing game. Not saying he sucks, but he is not ready to start. He is a very good blocker (especially for a rookie) and should be our second TE. He should be used as a pass catcher on occasion to keep the defense off balance and can be successful in that role. However if you ask him to be a receiver the number of times he would need to as our #1 I can't see anything but horrible failure at this point.

Egnew IMO has done nothing to show he hasn't improved. In my eyes he has far outplayed Clay. He is not a great blocker but certainly has improved in that area.

A round about way of saying "Egnew IMO has shown that he has improved".

    I think. :shifty:

I'd rather see more of Egnew and Sims than Clay though.

I saw enough from Clay last year to give him some serious looks in the first couple games of regular season to really test him out. I felt he did what we asked of him last year, and he doesn't seem to be a player that would regress. He had a less than a great showing, but who knows...maybe his ankle tape wasn't tight enough I do see Egnew as a big question mark, but also think he could come into his own. Sims has shown me nothing to dislike him as of yet, and he is "young". Often times, I feel, that people on this forum are quick to judge. I will say, that, we should have picked up Linebacker from Oregon Kiko Alonso, who got drafted to the bills. I won a Championship in High school with him, I started weakside d-end, he was middle Linebacker. Hell of a kid, next Urlacher, IMHO. See yall around!

personally though, I really like Sims, I think he has a lot of upside. He's not as fast as I want him to be but I think he can make catches and he reminds me a lot about Antonio Gates. A lot to prove tho, that's ok.

Antonio Gates would be good. Very Good. lol...

I'd settle for him being Fasano like this season though and he can work his way up to AG. ;-)

gates was always a larger finesse Player which is why he was able to get open so much and make plays. instincts are key. Btw, I always liked the fasano to be honest. he always seem to come up with the catch when we needed one. Maybe I wasn't being critical enough though?

People are getting really badly hysterical in this thread. He didn't have a good night having been elevated into a starting role, but it isn't like we haven't seen him on the field before. Without improvement, he will likely be a decent starting tight end who looks quite good at times and has maddening lapses. If he fixes those lapses, he's got the potential to be quite good.

If you take Clay's production and extrapolate it to Fasano's passing snap count last year, he's putting up 46 catches for 544 yards, 5 TDs, catching 66.?% of his passes, but dropping 15. It's neither ideal, and certainly a drop-off from what you'd expect of Dustin Keller, but it's acceptable. It's most certainly not out of bounds that he improve, either.

Now that Clay seems to have the job we need tighter routes and reliable hands. Hopefully it comes with more reps.

I'm terrified. I don't think Clay can hack it.

We add a monster TE to go with Clay..and Clay is our Hernandez..minus the murdering and gun running of course....

Saints get cold feet...we sign Graham..and go win 13 games...something like that would be good.

There's some posts by some critics and trolls above that seem pretty short-sighted at the moment. And they're usually the ones that think they know (and WILL tell you so) more than the coaches on the players.

That said...nobody is 100%...I always liked Clay myself, but there are others I liked that have bombed...nobody's perfect.
