Barker maybe a guy they have penciled in for a PS spot, and they are usually guys who are waived at the final cut.

He had to maintain his rep as one of the major spouters of hyperbole around here.

I don't understand not bringing in viable competition at RG, last year it was the oft injured Hicks and this year Louis. It's like they're just handing the job to Jerry.

To save against the cap, all they had to do was cut them before the Week 1 game.

    Haha. Could be.

Omar theorizes that Ireland is keeping Corp around so that Corp can be brought to the practice squad if a team claimes Pat Devlin off waivers after final cuts.

But I have an issue with this theory. It implies that Pat Devlin is practice squad eligible. I don't believe he is.

    http://www.steeleraddicts.com/nfl-practice-squad-eligibility-rules/

Pat Devlin spent the entire 2012 season on the 53 man roster from start to finish. I believe that means he's no longer eligible for the practice squad.

Marshall had a much bigger salary than Jorvorskie Lane. And, while you may not agree, I think the writing was on the wall that either Marshall or Patterson were going to be cut for salary reasons. With Keller being down, I figured Lane would get another game to prove he's a better run-blocker than Rodriguez. Marshall wasn't good last year, and was hurt, and wasn't playing better than Patterson this year, so I see nothing wrong with the timing of it. It was bound to happen to one of the two of them.

Jamar Taylor is has also been back the past 2 weeks and has played pretty well, which I think mitigates Nolan Carroll. I don't think Will Davis, even if healthy, is going to be an active player on game days. He's not consistent enough in the games and he's a poor, poor, tackler.

While I was very surprised he was cut at this stage, I never had any illusions about him being a savior on the line. Maybe Brenner has a small shot, but likely not.

I only thought he would be better than Jerry which isn't saying much. But at least a better fit in a ZBS.

Probably a combo of creating more practice reps for Rodriguez and giving Lane an outside chance of joining the Jets. Lol.

Agreed that one would be cut. However what if Patterson gets hurt before the final cut to 53? I just saw no rationale to cutting him that early unless they would have cut him regardless of anything to do with Patterson. Which seems odd since he was getting at least half of the 1st team reps.

Here is the CBA section on Practice Squad eligibility:

Am I reading this wrong? It seems to be saying that Pat Devlin having already accrued a season as a Miami Dolphin means he's not eligible for the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.

If Pat Devlin had accrued his season with let's say the Dallas Cowboys, but was not Activated for 9 games during that Accrued Season, he would be eligible for the Miami Dolphins' practice squad. But that's not the case. Devlin is not a free agent from another team. He was on the Dolphins and the season he accrued was with the Miami Dolphins.

I am surprised about Louis. I knew he wasn't healthy yet, but I felt he was worth waiting for. Not surprised about Lane as I thought Rodriquez showed more. Not sure why Corp is still here unless it's just b/c they want him to play a ton in the last preseason game.

Nolan Carroll started last year (and I haven't seen anything saying he's out for an extended period) and R.J. Stanford played quite a bit. Jamar Taylor has been playing for 2 weeks now, and they've got to have some sort of expectation for him. Personally, I was hoping he'd end up the starter opposite Grimes, but the groin injury seems to have derailed that for now. But, I think you can certainly count on him if you need to end up giving someone a heavier snap load.

Even if something happens to Patterson, they've still got a guy who started last year in Carroll; a guy who played a decent amount in Stanford; a guy who is now healthy that IMO should be expected to contribute heavily in Taylor; and that's counting the snaps that Jimmy Wilson took at CB or the few games that De'Andre Presley was activated for last year. And, IMO, I don't think the drop-off from Marshall to Carroll is all that much.

I was wondering - and I'm not great with all the salary ramifications - can or could it be in the Dolphins thoughts to re-sign Lance Louis, if they like, after next Monday and then his salary isn't guaranteed for the year. Louis may not like that, but, to me, it doesn't seem beyond the realm of possibility.

I'm not surprised. In the 5th preseason, if Devlin goes down late, you don't want Moore or Tanny in the game.

They had cut him previously. I'm wondering if they maybe had a handshake deal when they brought him back (after Devlin got hurt) agreeing not to cut him in this round of cuts and to let him play a good bit in the last pre-season game to at least "get some tape" (or whatever the correct verbiage is there). But yeah, I agree, Tannehill ain't playing but a couple handoffs, and Moore probably not much after that, if any. The rest of the game will probably be Devlin and Corp.

I thought Rodriguez blocked well, and looked much stronger than any other tight end or fullback on the team. He looked good in receiving as well. If and I repeat, "if" he has his head on straight, I think he could surprise some folks. I think his blocking and receiving gets him a spot on the roster.

I'm a little surprised at Lane being cut at this stage and not staying until the final cut, but rather that it saying he's not good enough for the final 75, I just think it says they've made the decision to not go with a pure FB and run with Rodriguez instead who has more position flexibility.

Having said that, it doesn't guarantee Rodriquez's spot either, we might just let Clay and Sims play from FB when required (and Egnew, who's lined up their during pre-season as well).

Maybe they cut Lane now so that Rodriguez (or anyone) could get more reps as the upback in the return game? That was something I only noticed Lane doing during the games, never anyone else.

With two more weeks to recover, could he be a call back vet after game one ?? If he's not picked up by someone...

In terms of Louis, i wouldnt doubt if this move was attributed to him letting himself go while he was on the shelf and he's just to far gone, somebody in the front office should start to understand players who do, and do not know how to take care of their bodies with a cutting edge purpose and start incorporating it into the acquisition process.

If Devlin is waived and clears waivers does he become, by NFL definition, a "free agent" then?

Smart thing about the Louis move is that if he heals he can be brought back at any time since he learned our system and playbook.

If a team is not going to play the starters at all or for only a short time, then you need a certain number of OL to be available for the Saints game. So guys like Barker and Breener, or Gray and McDonald, are needed for this game coming up. While I believe there will be some competition to be settled I believe those not destined to be on the 53 are for managing the game itself, or like has been stated, for managing the potential practice squad.

So far I'm right about most of my cut predictions from the other thread. I just got one more dream in my cuts.

Louis couldn't get healthy enough to get in shape in time to challenge Jerry. They aren't going to guarantee a $1.6 million contract on the hope he gets in shape. They can always bring him back during the season if he doesn't sign elsewhere if he gets in better playing shape.
