McNutt is better than Tyms. I'd take him over Bumphis too personally.

Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, McNutt with Bumphis on the practice squad, IMO.

Seen nothing from Tyms. I like Bumphis better than McNutt, and he has a strong resemblance to Mark Duper to me... if only he had Duper's speed from back in the day.

NO WAY Bumphis makes it to the practice squad. If Miami releases him, someone will scoop him up. They better make him the #5, or he's gone.

And, me... personally... I'd take Tyms over McNutt. Maybe that's just me. Very good size, and shifty. Gets separation. He also might have been our most productive 'lower-tier' WR during the first 4 weeks of the preseason. He's a 6'3" guy who ran a 4.4 at his pro day and had a 38" vertical. He and Bumphis would be my #4 and #5.

EDIT: That'd be with me releasing Rishard Matthews, which is not likely. Maybe the Phins keep 6 this year.

I could certainly see it as plausible that no one claims him if he gets released.

I'm guessing this is going to turn on the definition of Accrued Season which I would think is elsewhere in the CBA.

To be considered an accrued season, it might require a certain number of weeks on the game active roster, rather than just on the 53.

Which might be further effected by the weird special rules for #3 QBs, not counting toward the active roster unless it is the 4th Quarter and the other two guys go down or something like that...

Could also turn on definition of free agent players with the QB rule.

For the record, the Dolphins tell me Pat Devlin is indeed eligible for the practice squad, if they choose to go that route.

I'm not going to try to explain (or even understand) the archaic PS rules. It's easier just to go straight to the source.

I really hope we don't get cute with Pat Devlin. We need to keep him on the 53. Seriously... he's better than most of the quarterbacks we've had since Marino walked out on us. I hope he starts against the Saints on Thursday and proves his merit to you non believers.

Marshall seems to have some semblance of ball skills and decent hands. Carroll has some of the worst ball skills of any CB in the league, IMO. At least among those who played fairly high number of snaps anyway. Yeah he finally got a pick this preseason, but it was gift wrapped. All he had to do was not drop it.
IMO if the salaries were anywhere close, I'd take Marshall over Carroll in a millisecond.
Hell, I like Stanford better than the Carroll I saw last season.

At this point, it doesn't really matter though, Dimitri Patterson is still healthy. And, if Jamar Taylor keeps playing the way he has these past two weeks, he's going to end up being that 3rd CB to enter the game over Carroll before too long. The simple fact is that Richard Marshall's play didn't merit the contract he was being paid, and now he's gone. Just based on this year's preseason action, I don't think you can fairly say Marshall outplayed Carroll, but you can fairly say that Patterson outplayed Marshall.

  16. I do not understand why they would consider not keeping 3 QBs on the roster. IMO that is a really dangerous gamble to take.

I don't. He'd probably have showed up out of shape like most seasons. At this point he'd be demoted and in the dog house.

I do see a big drop off to Carroll. I've come to expect him to do something stupid every game.

I don't know if this is the way I'd go, but I do think this is the way the coaches have the pecking order at this point, all the way down to Bumphis on the PS.

Obviously, I could be wrong... I just hardly ever think I am about this stuff - ha! That last part was a joke, jic... Well, somewhat joking.

Hard really to get excited over 5/6/7 Wr slots though, tbh I'm curious if they keep Kyle Miller, we need Te insurance more than Wr insurance.

Miller looks better than TEs that made the roster in the past. If he's cut, it's likely that he'll end up on another team's roster, which may cause the Dolphins to use a decent draft pick next year. 4th and 5th wide receivers are less expensive to acquire with many found with late round picks and UDFAs. If WR becomes a need during the season, there are usually teams willing to deal an overpaid WR that dropped down the depth chart.

I don't get the Devlin talk. Doesn't the 2nd string QB get snaps with the starting offense as the team preps for the next opponent? If so, then the team needs a 3rd QB to run the opponent's offense to prep the defense.

I thought of that as well. I looked up the definition yesterday of an Accrued Season as per the CBA and it seems to me like Pat Devlin most definitely would have accrued a season in 2012.

One thing you thought of that I did not though is the definition of "free agent players" but I notice that it is not capitalized, so the definition is likely not set forth in the document.

As Ohiophinphan stated, it may be that once you cut Pat Devlin and let him pass through waivers, he is now considered a "free agent player" and therefore fits into A33-S4-a-ii.

But that is curious to me because I'm not sure why the language would be structured that way between A33-S4-a-i and A33-S4-a-ii. If passing through waivers makes Pat Devlin a free agent then any player must be a free agent in order to sign on the practice squad. The team can't just take a rookie for example (who has yet to accrue a season and therefore falls into A33-S4-a-i) and put him straight from the roster onto the practice squad without passing through waivers and becoming a free agent.

If Devlin gets cut .... to me it speaks volumes about how the team values him - i don't think it is a 'roster spot' issue. IF you think he is ready to be a backup, then you trade Moore and keep him. I know the FO wants to win now, but honestly believe we are still 1 year away. DEFENSE will carry the water this year ... and playoffs are a definite possibility, but a 'need' to keep Moore if Devlin is worth anything just isn't there.

Would also take Bumphis over McNutt as well. IF McNutt had sure hands - it might be different, but he just hasn't shown that to date. Bumphis, though lacking experience - to me seems to have higher potential, so keep him.

Same for along the DL .... i would find a way to keep both Francis and Okpalaugo, they both are showing some definite potential over Martin and Shelby .... not sure either of these 2 will make it to or stay on the PS ...

It might be possible. But, I certainly wouldn't count on it. Bumphis is a natural playmaker, like a poor man's Stedman Bailey. He needs development, but he's exactly the type of WR you want at your #5 position. I wouldn't take a chance with him.

I'm sorry but I am having a little trouble understanding your post. Must be how I am hearing your use of a subjunctive case.

Everyone who is signed to a practice squad does have to clear waivers don't they?

    Yes.

Which is why I find it strange that they specified the "free agent players" part in A33-S4-a-ii, if Pat Devlin would qualify as a "free agent player" just by virtue of the Dolphins cutting him and him passing through waivers.
