Watson got a 40 on his wonderlic. Learning shouldn't be a problem.

The guy has long arms and huge hands, an 82 inch wingspan on a guy 6'2.5"

His numbers indicate that he may not be very athletic, but if he could figure a way to optimize the gifts and talent he does have he might yet become a solid player.

so would that be a signing before week 1 or will they do it after week 1 so they don't have to guarantee his salary ?

    To Everything (Churn, Churn, Churn)
There is NFL season (Churn, Churn, Churn)
And a time to every player, under Philbin

A time to pass, a time to run
A time to sign, a time to cut
A time to punt, a time to block
A time to hike, a time to say 'hut'

    To Everything (Churn, Churn, Churn)
There is NFL season (Churn, Churn, Turn)
And a time to every player, under Philbin

A time to bulk up,a time to slim down
A time to practice, a time to watch film
A time to cast away busts, a time to gather acorns together

    To Everything (Churn, Churn, Churn)
There is a season (Churn, Churn, Churn)
And a time to every player, under Philbin

A time of wins, a time of losses
A time of practice, a time of game plans
A time you may gameplan, a time to get depth for the roster

    To Everything (Churn, Churn, Churn)
There is a season (Churn, Churn, Churn)
And a time to every player, under Philbin

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to hit waivers, a time to rehab
A time for football, a time for the Browns
A time for Lombardi, I swear it's not impossible

I guess I was still remembering Samuda's first game at RG and by comparison it seemed like some blocking was happening in pass pro.

Pretty low bar of comparison, but still. I'd be thrilled with average play out of the right guard at this point.

Do you remember if he faced off against Von Miller and Aldon Smith? Perhaps, his role could be what they initially envisioned for Dallas Thomas; that is, to back up LT and LG. David Diehl was able to manned the LT position without ideal measurements. According to Watkins scouting report, he supposedly has a great punch which may have been the primary reason why he was a great college LT.

Jerry is not the answer. Too little production and too much drama about his weight. Time to move on.

Real problem is he is currently the weakest link on the OL, his pass blocking is sub par and inside pressure from the RG position is the 2nd most effective route to the Qb.

I like JJ more than most do, just think there should have been more development in his game by now.

Sucks for Samuda, love the longshot type players but he just did not appear to have the goods to play for us.

As for Watkins, to me, this is gut check time for him, he has a fresh start so he should make the most of it.

Watkins scored a 15 the first time he took the exam last spring, so his 25-point improvement will be discarded by NFL teams, which have expressed some concern about his ability to handle playing multiple positions despite having the physical skill set to play anywhere on the line.

A smart move IMO... if he's healthy, the guy can play guard, or tackle if it came to it, and he still has a lot of undeveloped talent.

From what I have read, Watkins was a rookie starter for the Eagles, then last season had an ankle injury that cost him a number of games. Historically, he has had issues with his ankles though, which the Eagles knew when they drafted him. The Eagles thought he was faking the severity of it and things went south from there... kinda reminded me of the Matt Roth issue the Fins had a few years ago which resulted in Roth becoming a productive player for the Browns at the time...

Hoping a change of geography and coaching, along with a fresh start, get us a solid Guard out of Watkins.

That's a good comparison (Roth). Sometimes injuries make a team lose faith in a player especially if they think he's faking it. As much as I like Samuda and believe he could develop into a nice interior back-up, Watkins could well be a fortuitous find/opportunity. If he's recovered then he may have the potential to solve the RG position down the line and move Jerry to the backup role.
