Not sure how many folks saw this piece on Grantland yesterday, but our beloved Dolphins made an appearance on the list. I think Barnwell is a hack, but I'd love to get the take of fellow members:

It was a reasonably fair assessment.

All the answers may turn out to be yes, but they are not slam dunks by any means.

Im not much of a fan of anything Grantland puts out but I think its a pretty fair assessment. This team has some boom/bust potential. It can easily be a 11-12 win team if things shake out just right (i.e. Tannehill progresses faster then expected and becomes a stud QB, Martin is good, Miller plays well and the defense is top 5 in pts against) or it can be a 6 win team if the opposite happens. Personally, I think we come in around 9 wins. Im not sure what would happen with JI.

I actually listened to that podcast, unfortunately. Barnwell admits his bias against the Dolphins. "Great length" means he regurgitated exactly what we have all heard from the national media. I understand people like Barnwell aren't going to pour over every move and examine it from all angles, but I'll just say there is nothing really insightful or new here. Some of the points are fair I will grant. Nobody really here expects a great team

    From the podcast I remember:

Jake Long is still thought of as Jake Long so the combo of Martin and Clabo must be worse. Also, Martin may not work out because he wasn't a first round pick

    They like Miller and Wake

    No safety valve for Ryan.

Patterson/Grimes is worse than Davis/Smith. This is bad because it means that 2 players are better than one player that lined up for the Colts in 2012 because of urinary issues and another that liked the Colts enough to refuse gift interceptions from GOAT Luck

The Jordan pick was baffling. I mean the guy didn't get very many sacks in college

The loss of Keller hurts. Barnwell likes Clay but only as an H back. Fair

Odrick is a disappointment for a 1st round pick. I don't expect them to be aware of potential upside of putting him in a more natural position, so OK. Fair

Overpaid for LBs. The Dolphins paid more for Ellerbe than the Ravens. The Ravens know what they are doing. Therefore, Ellerbe is overpaid and the Dolphins will not get proper value out of him.

The Dolphins generally have overpaid across the board and will not get good value for the players they acquired

I didn't read the article, but most of those questions you posted seem very poor to me. They show very little understanding of how players fit in a system. Marshall is better if you're playing Madden, but if you want to space the field for a quick pass game then yes, Wallace does that much better than Marshall. Grimes fits a defensive scheme that wants to play off man and Sean Smith doesn't. They wanted more blitzing/pass pressure from their LBs so they got Ellerbe, but they also wanted Dansby (and his coverage) to return. That is the only one of those questions that's an unknown. And Long has been horrid in St. Louis while Martin has been much improved. Long would probably have been even worse here as he's a poor fit for our scheme. IMO it was a mistake to have even offered him a contract. I assume they did it in part out of loyalty, showing they reward their own, etc., but it was a bad idea. We're fortunate that Long understood that he was a much better fit in St. Louis. And the idea that Ireland wasn't trying to bring in players that fit Philbin's system better seems ridiculous. The signings were so obviously scheme fit driven. My impression from those questions is simply that the writer has very little understanding of football.

Love how he has already assumed that the Colts would start 2-0 by beating vastly inferior competition. That is a bunch of bullcrap. The Colts are not vastly better than Miami and I hope we kick their *** week 2.

I saw this. Does he make good points? Maybe. However, I don't agree on his stance.

Is Mike Wallace an upgrade on Brandon Marshall? Yes. Can Brandon Marshall stretch the field like Wallace; can Marshall take the top off a defense and open up the field for other receivers? Are the Dolphins better off with Brent Grimes than they were with Sean Smith? Yes. While solid, was Smith a play-maker for us? Is Dannell Ellerbe really better than Karlos Dansby? Debatable at this point. But from what I saw in pre-season, he's definitely more explosive. Would they really rather have Tyson Clabo at right tackle and Jonathan Martin on the left side than Jake Long on the left and Martin on the right? Was Jake Long the same player last year that he was in his first couple of years? No. BY all indications, Martin will be just fine at LT. I don't know the answers to those questions, and I don't think Ireland knows them, either, but the shiny newness of those first options are enough to justify spending tens of millions of dollars, apparently.

I think most of us agree that we feel a lot better today than we did this time last year. It sucks losing Keller, but I think Sims will step up if given the chance. Gibson should also feature more in the passing game than he would have had Keller not gone down. Sorry, but all bias aside, I really don't see how this team can be worse than last year. Anything less than a 9-7/10-6 season will be a failure. Don't forget, we were two FGs away from being 9-7 last year.

The entire article is based on common media narratives and old perceptions.. Grimes is a beast compared to to Sean Smith. It is a clear upgrade. If Grimes stays healthy this year it may be remembered as the best FA signing of 2013 for the entire NFL. Sean Smith enfatuation is ridiculous, based on hype and his size. However, WTF has he done since we drafted him? Last year he blew crucial plays in the 4th quarter when we needed him most. Marshall was traded 2 years ago so I don’t see how it is relevant to signing Wallace this off-season. Also, Brandon is up to his old tricks again in Chicago and a meltdown is coming soon. Funny how that doesn’t factor in to their analysis at all – We didn’t exactly trade Marshall to swap him with another player, we traded him due to his off field behavior and cancerous attitude on the team. The TE position is questionable, no doubt.

For the most part, though, without a "Pollyanna" view, you can answer most of those questions.

The one that is closest to a push is the first one, to me. Marshall may be a better all-around receiver than Mike Wallace, however with what Wallace brings to the team as far as speed factor and having to roll a deep safety his way, I think Wallace may be better for this team that wants to be a little balanced between the run and pass. Marshall also had his own special set of problems that served as an off-field distraction to the team. He would also be one to demand the ball in an offense where the coach doesn't want that at all, and if he didn't get the ball enough to his liking, there would be on-field distractions as well. I favor Wallace as the better WR for Miami, but I can understand why someone would say Marshall is the overall more talented WR.

Grimes versus Smith? As long as he's healthy, Grimes is a Pro Bowl-caliber CB. Smith was not. Grimes intercepts more balls than Smith. Neither are necessarily shut down CBs, but Grimes is one tier below. Smith isn't on that tier, imo.

Ellerbe versus Dansby. Let's say right now, at this moment in time, the two players are equal. If you're giving a multi-year contract to either player, which would perform better over the life of that contract? I think the answer is simply Ellerbe. He's younger and getting better, while Dansby is older and declining. Ellerbe should be a better pass rusher. And hopefully - and I love Karlos as an AU Tiger, but I'll still say that I hope - Ellerbe doesn't run his mouth as much.

The way Jake Long looked to be breaking down last year and in this preseason, having Long/Martin wouldn't be as good as having Martin/Clabo. It's close, but yeah, I'll take the latter. Martin is more a LT than RT, and even though he played poorly last year, he's young, smart, getting stronger, and improving. Do I trust him? No. But I wouldn't have trusted Long, either. I think Clabo on the right will be better than Martin on the right. Martin/Long is a push on the left.

While the answer to best-cases and worst-cases almost always reside somewhere in the middle, between whether I think Tannehill improves versus Tannehill regressing, I really, really think he'll improve. Obviously, if he regresses, we wasted the 8th overall draft pick the draft before last. I don't see that happening. With a better receiving corps, and most all other things being equal, I think he improves, without much doubt. I also think the defense will force more turnovers, which will help the offense with shorter fields in situations, which will also help Tannehill.

As long as Tannehill improves, I don't think we're a falling franchise, and, yeah, I expect improvement.

All of the questions are an unknown. You can talk about schemes all you want, none of the players we have added have proven they will be anymore effective in this system than the players they replaced. And for Brandon Marshall, even though he was on a different team last year he was without question a better WR than Wallace.

That's simply not true. It is already proven that Wallace stretches the field more than Marshall. Grimes excelled playing off man and is being asked to do the same here while Smith always struggled with off man. Long is best in a man blocking scheme where he can use his strength and use less of his questionable foot speed while Martin was always best known for having good feet but questionable strength. Those are all painfully obvious. They are without question better fits. Could they be injured or have some other disaster befall them? Sure, but they are clearly better fits. That is not an unknown.

I think there are some issues with the article, but Grantland has some really good articles. I was really skeptical initially considering Bill Simmons is a pox on society, but giving a venue to guys like Chris Brown is really helpful.

The questions could be a little more nuanced and better researched, though. The relative costs aren't at all discussed when considering free agent moves, which is important. Jonathan Martin/Tyson Clabo might not be an upgrade over Jake Long/Jonathan Martin, but financially it is a hugely different proposition, with the question of Jake Long's performance now vs. early in his career not being discussed.

The check-down/comfort receiver thing is a little obtuse, too. Reggie Bush wasn't really a particularly useful check-down option here. He was much better on screen plays and things like wheel routes than making himself available underneath ala Ray Rice. If you wanna talk about someone that Ryan Tannehill is completely comfortable with, it's Brian Hartline.

I doubt Dannell Ellerbe is a big upgrade over Karlos Dansby, but there's a clear nuance to it though- They're clearly looking to be more aggressive defensively in terms of blitzing, and that's where Wheeler and Ellerbe shine.

You are clearly missing his point. It was already proven that the players that left (S Smith, Long, Marshall) can't function as well in Philbin's system, so that's why you go out and get the players that are potential upgrades in our system.

Wallace is a Improvement over Marshall but Marshall's off the field problems were a big part of that . Miller is no way a improvement over Bush and Daniel Thomas is a slug nothing more and there is a artice on the worst runningback squad in the league and Miami had the 4th or 5th worst runningbacks in the nfl so I don't see Miami moving up . fallen yes we have fallen for two reason.

the first reason is we haven't been getting players that are more talented then the ones we replaced by a large margin.

second, has anyone noticed how un popular that Miami has gotten over the last 15 years. ( Miami doesn't have many friends in the media especially at cbs and espn.

Cleveland , Rams , Tennessee and other teams are becoming more popular then Miami and that kills me because we should be way more popular then what we are .

My main problem with the article is this guy doesn't understand Miami's player personnel. You would think from reading this article, losing such great talent like Long, Bush, Bess, Fasano, Dansby, and Smith, that we've been perennially an 11-5 win team or better, and gambled our fortune away. We made no effort to sign any of those guys (Long being an exception) for a reason. And it's not financial...

    Keller > Fasano
    Grimes > Smith
    Ellerbe > Dansby
    Gibson > Bess

    Those are obvious upgrades.

Jake Long didn't want to be here. Can't do much about that. Frankly, we may have dodged a bullet. 2008-2009 Jake Long was a monster. 2010-2012 Jake Long, was regressing every year, whether it be because of injuries or otherwise. Being a former 1st overall selection and pro bowler doesn't entitle anyone to franchise LT contract. I don't know if Martin is the answer, but I feel pretty confident Jake Long isn't either.

I don't think it's a fair article at all. I think it's obviously biased and poorly argued. It just asks the same questions everyone else has been asking for months. All this Barnwell guy is doing is putting a negative spin on every single point, implying that nothing the Dolphins have done this offseason will work out like they want or expect. He could ask the same questions about every offseason move in the NFL.

His questions about the trade up to pick Dion Jordan, as well as his correlation of Mike Wallace to Brandon Marshall, IMO, are particularly stupid. It reeks of someone pulling a list out of his butt and then spinning to justify it.

So, everyone has hidden agenda or attitudes, but he just feels left at the alter so he wont give them any real praise until they rack up Wins.

I think the point of Wheeler and Ellerbe over Dansby and Burnett was to get younger and faster. Your saving almost 8 years with the moves and really shouldn't drop production.

The linebacker moves made perfect sense. Wallace made perfect sense, you gotta have a deep threat. The Keller injury was unfortunate but we could all see the potential that was going to be there and I doubt we would have missed Fasano.

The secondary needed overhauled and we did what we could there. The past regime just didn't make plays. Unfortunately with overhauls it will take some time to come together. I love the potential we have there.

The RB position on the surface seems dumb to the outside world but in reality makes perfect sense. Bush was never going to be the long term answer here and it makes little sense to not start looking for that answer today. Will Lamar Miller be the guy, he certainly has the speed, but there is more to the position than just speed.

The O-line I have to agree with him on. Jake Long played injuried last season and there is no reason to believe he won't have a solid year in St. Louis. We were never going to get Long back however, as Long made that perfectly clear, so it's useless to cry over it. I do believe Ireland fumbled by not addressing the vacancy. Can Martin get stronger? Can Martin protect RT's blindside? Can Clabo be as good as Martin on the right side? I don't think so, but we'll take a wait and see approach. If the O-line can't play well, this team is sunk.

We all know my stance on the Dion Jordan pick, so I'll save going into it again. However, there is a reason Jeff Ireland was down on the field in spring practices talking to the trainers and coaches about Jordan. He has a lot riding on this pick. This pick will be a defining moment on Irelands resume. This is the guy he went all-in on, because when you leap up the draft board, dump a 2nd rounder, ingore your hole at LT, to select a guy, your all-in on that guy.

If the Dolphins don't make the playoffs and Jordan is a bust this season, Ireland is gone.

You used the key word. Potential upgrades. It's entirely possible that these potential upgrades come in and play worse than the players they are replacing. Namely, it's entirely possible that the offensive line play this season is overall worse than last season. If that happened, then the replacements weren't better fits, were they? Stating matter of factly, as some posters have done in this thread that they are in fact upgrades is either viewing things through aqua and orange colored glasses, or maybe posters on here have a time machine? If you do, does Miami make the playoffs this season? I'd love to know.

The likely scenario that the offensive line could be in worse shape than it was last season, or the possibility that Wallace is not as effective a WR than Marshall, and that the LB play might not be very much improved, or even worse makes these questions worth being asked.

That would mean that Ireland has continued his trend of "running in place" roster moves and that this team is likely to never improve with him as GM.

Now, before anyone crucifies me for even daring to make a disparaging remark about Jeffrey "pasty legs" Ireland, I'll acknowledge that these players may indeed be upgrades and hopefully the Dolphins do improve this season.

He prefaces the article by saying he will discuss 8 teams that simply won't be as good as they were in 2012. But then he compares Wallace to Marshall, um hello, Marshall played for the Bears last year. Wallace was brought in to be the number 1 wr essentially replacing Hartline in that role not Marshall.

But if you want to look on the bright side, everyone says our first 5 games will be brutal but according to Barnwell the Colts, Falcons and Ravens have all regressed from last year so maybe it won't be so bad.

That's a valid point but considering Ireland completely and totally failed to replace Marshall in 2012 I think he's considering that a lost year for the purpose of comparison at that position.

And Ireland came out and admitted that he underpriced the WR free agent market last year. Personally I think thats a great thing because it game us the ammunition to go after Wallace this year. I think he is going to be a game changer, even if he doesn't have a ton of yards or TD's he makes teams gameplan for him and he makes the teams defense have to defend him. I dont think we have even seen the Wallace to Tannehill potential either. You get Tannehill on a PA rollout to Wallace's side and give him some time to get deep were going to get a lot of yards and TD's from that.

Without reading the article, I can tell tell you those are not the questions people should be asking about the Dolphins.

Firstly, "is Mike Wallace an upgrade on Brandon Marshall?" Foolish question as Marshall is no longer on the team and hasn't been on the team for 2 years. That question makes it seem they straight up traded Wallace for Marshall and that was not so. Wallace is an upgrade to what we had last year, no questions.
Secondly, "are the Dolphins better off with Grimes than they were with Sean Smith?" I mean come on, seriously? Is this really a valid question?
Thirdly, "is Dannell Ellerbe really better than Karlos Dansby?" I mean, he is younger, cost relatively the same or less, and fits better in the plans of what the defensive coordinator and team want to do.
Foruth, the tackles quote, I don't know what version of Jake Long he has in mind, but IMO Clabo is a better right tackle than Martin was, and Jake Long on current form leaves a lot to be desired.

Seems strange that he says he does not know the answers to these questions, yet feels compelled to bring them up, and furthermore, with the Titanic smartass remark, pretty much insinuates that he does infact know the answers to them and they are not positive for the Dolphins.

Frankly I don't think much of Ireland as a talent evaluator or as a negotiator/recruiter, but that article is ludicrous. Sean Smith never, ever lived up to his potential whereas Brent Grimes is proven talent. Martin sucked at right tackle and while I DO think we should have gone another direction at left tackle, he's certainly better there than he was at RT. Did we overpay for Wallace? Maybe, but so what? It's not as if he'll perform worse because we overpaid for him. It's not my money and its not the guy's who wrote the article, so what the hell do I care?
I have much more against Ireland for what he DIDN'T do than what he did. We may indeed fail this season, but it won't be the lack of Jake Long, Sean Smith or Brandon Marshall that does us in: it'll be whether or not Tannehill can progress at QB.

That is the thing I do not understand. In today's quarterback friendly league, Miami's quarterback situation is better than the Bills and the Jets. In fact, a lot better than the Bills. However I have seen Miami be predicted as 3rd in the division.

I don't mind criticism over the Fins, as most of the time its due, but like a previous poster mentioned, the author came out and said he has a disdain for the Fins and his "opinions" were just a regurgitated mess with nothing to really back them up. I listened to about half of his podcast before I turned it off.

Some great insight in this thread. I have quite a few problems with this article and despite a surprising (to me) amount of members saying the article is fair, I have to disagree.

Let's start with Sean Smith. Here is a guy that was allergic to the football during his time in Miami. The next big play he makes in a regular season game will be the first in his professional career. The biggest play he made as a Dolphin was in a preseason tilt against the Saints. That is not hyperbole. As Yeremiah Bell might say, 'he stinks.'

Moving onto Reggie. When has it ever been a good idea to give money to a RB in his late twenties? Let's forget for a moment that he lacks the vision of an above-average RB in the NFL and consider the financial implications of resigning Reggie when you have a younger, cost-controlled back in Miller who, oh by the way, happened to outperform Reggie on the football field in limited action last season.

Barnwell's answer to Smith's lack of playmaking ability and Bush's lack of vision is for Ireland to.... reward those negative attributes with a contract extension? What?

Moving on, the comparison of the current skill-position group to last year's crop (which was widely considered to be amongst the bottom-five in the league). Barnwell is going to lament the loss Bess and Fasano regarding their contributions to the passing game? Are you actually serious? Fasano was an excellent blocker but brought next to nothing in creating favorable matchups in passing situations. Again, for a moment, let's ignore the fact that Tannehill's actual safety blanket Brian Hartline was retained. Perhaps Barnwell should've done a little research into Gibson's knack for extending drives in St. Louis' offense last season.

Really, it comes down to evaluating whether the group of Clay/Grimes/Miller/Gibson are a better bet to outperform the likes of Fasano/Smith/Bush/Bess. I can't see how one would think the latter group is a better bet to outperform the former, seeing as how we've all been afforded the opportunity to witness the level of production the latter group provided us last season.

Grantland had a great article on Reshad Jones last week, but really, if the author comes out and admits he's biased against the Dolphins for "making him look bad" because they couldn't back up his prediction then I have no interest in what he has to say. I don't mind criticism and questioning what the team has done but I rather hear it from people who don't have an axe to grind against the team.

The discussion in this thread is good enough for me and I pretty much agree with everything FIPL just said as well as others. Based on getting younger, more athletic, and finding better fits for the schemes, I think we did what we had to do in the offseason to compete. Of course, we will have to see how it plays out when the bullets start flying Sunday.

I understand what you are saying but the premise of his article is this year versus last so Marshall is completely irrelevant.

I don't think Marshall is right for this offense. I think Philbin knows the offense he wants to run better than anyone. He didn't think Marshall was right for it. This isn't an argument where X coordinator knows more than the average fan. This is a Super Bowl winning OC who knows what type of receiver works best in his offense.

I also don't like looking at total stats and then coming to the conclusion that Dion Jordan is not as good of a pass rusher as X player.

Looking Dion Jordan's pass rushing efficiency numbers, meaning sacks per rushes, his numbers is as high as anyone in the draft.

He is a very talented player who gives a lot of flexibility in how he can be used.

So I appreciate your willingness to play devil's advocate and you make some excellent points. I agree with you that the changes made in the offseason are far from a slam-dunk upgrade. There's a ton of risk in a guy like Grimes, who hasn't been able to stay on the field the past few seasons. But I propose to you the question, what is the risk of doing nothing?

We're talking about an offense that was 27th in the NFL in yards and PPG last season. I'd say the idea of offering multi-year commitments to stand pat (for guys like Bush and Fasano) was a much riskier course of action than exploring the marketplace for potential higher-ceiling upgrades over a significantly shorter term (Keller, for example). Really, unless you're projecting a gigantic uptick in production from last year's aforementioned crop of skill guys, how much worse can you get via change?

Marshall the player fits. Marshall the person doesn't. He's mentally ill, and considering his cost, the coaches determined he wasn't worth the trouble.

Regarding Sean Smith, he stated this preseason that KC was a better fit for him b/c they play more press coverage.
As far as Wallace & Marshall go, yes it could be looked at as us essentially swapping them out, but we also dropped Brandon's baggage and added 2 third rounders in the process. We'll have to see how Egnew & Will Davis turn out to see if the picks bring further value.
