I'm more of an Ireland supporter/defender than most, but the day you rationalize every FO move is the day you've guzzled the aqua kool-aid. The FO passed on a vastly superior FB for short money, and then claimed the alternative weeks later, following a preseason in which the short yardage running game suffered considerably. The decision warrants questioning/discussion.

I'm speaking more to the relative hype of a good game on the opening weekend and the hysteria that ensues that we didn't sign him when we had the chance. Awfully convenient timing.

Not when you're paying ~$6M every season just so the games can be televised locally. Or paying $20M/yr. on interest alone for renovations made 20 years ago.

The fact that Miami is $22M under the salary cap should tell everyone that the team isn't willing to spend simply because they have the money. The team's financial condition is ****.

Didn't the waiver claim for Evan Rodriguez go thru the same day as when Leach was released by the Ravens? In other words, we put in a claim the day before Leach was released. Yes, Erod is no longer with the team. But back then, I'd venture that he was expected to make the 53. You have Clay, Rodriguez and Lane vying for time at fullback. And then you bring in a fourth guy to add to the mix, a veteran nonetheless who is going to be paid more than those three players. It kind of takes away from the competition you already have.

Dolphins committed $286 million on new contracts this offseason. Over $100m of that was guaranteed money. So the cash outlay was certainly there, even if the cap room currently seems to suggest it wasn't.

Well they are required to spend to a certain degree. But I think for the time being, the team is going to be prudent once they've met the salary floor. Spending the extra money on a guy like Leach would be nice, but its apparent there are higher priorities for the organization than a move like that.

If Ryan Tannehill turns out to be a franchise-caliber QB, then I can see the team spending up to the cap max, but right now just doesn't seem like it would be adding much value to the organization to spend money on a guy like Leach.

I guess I see the decision not to sign Leach (or outbid the Ravens) more of a personnel decision than a financial / business decision.

Its always going to be both, IMO. You can't separate the two.

Guess I missed this story...though that was early June, there were reports after that refuted this, Armando, the Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson, both reported in July that there was never an offer made, that money wasn't even discussed, and that Miami would stand pat going into training camp.
