Canter hates Ireland and thinks Ross is a moron, this has been known for years.

    to add...

    David Canter ‏@davidcanter 9h
@bbolon yes we walked away from 35/15g/5 years

@WeNeedPlaymaker @davidcanter I believe that's the deal that was offered a couple years ago by Denver in free agency. I'm sure that's not the current offer

    David Canter ‏@davidcanter 1h
@bbolon @WeNeedPlaymaker definitely not current offer or deal would have been done

See, Soliai's age is catching up to him now. There is no way he's getting 5 years, $35m at this stage of his career, he's turning 30 in December. That $35m deal was apparently the Broncos offer during the 2012 offseason... The last deal he signed with us was only for 2 years, at $12m. I'd be surprised if he gets a longer term offer in the area of 4 or 5 years from us again... in retrospect, he probably should have signed that 5 year $35m deal with the Broncos... getting $7m per season. He's been getting $6m per from us. I can't imagine that's going to go up on our end. Although the 2 year deal he signed with us is really a good deal IMO.

The future of Soliai AND Starks is going to be determined by how well Jared Odrick plays this season. Jared is a free agent after the 2014 season. If he plays well this year, I can see us going with just one of Soliai/Starks in a 4 year/ $30m contract... and then paying Odrick the big money.

obviously the offer to Starks must have come before July 15th, 2013, the deadline to sign players on the tag to new deals. I know the Dolphins can't sign Starks to a new deal until the next offseason. My question is specifically when can they do that? After the start of free agency? or is there a time frame in there after the year ends but before free agency starts. When we signed Soliai to that 2 year deal, it was after he was allowed to test the market.

Football players should be trying to get the most money that they possibly can, not only is this game the most violent but unlike other sports the contracts are not guaranteed, Soliai did us a favor by taking a discount last offseason, he's continued to play at a high level so now it's time for him to get paid, he knows that and his agent definitely knows that....and we certainly have the cap space to get it done. Instead of foolishly giving over 4 mil a year to a 2 down LB who isn't even that good we could've let him walk and given some of that to Soliai.

Misi's extension will have no effect on whether or not we re-sign Big Paul, we have cap space. And football contracts are guaranteed.

But I agree that Soliai deserves to be paid, and he will be.

usually only a small percentage of the contract is guaranteed. and the Misi signing might not affect our cap much but it will probably have an effect on our offer to Soliai, and Starks and Grimes etc...I don't like that we're paying all this money to linebackers who aren't true pass rushers. You can find a Misi anywhere, but Soliai's don't grow on trees.

I disagree with this, and I think this idea seems to be the popular opinion on Misi.

For some reason, some people seem to think the Dolphins have so much depth at defensive line that they don't need to sign Starks or Soliai after this season. I just don't get it. The reason the Dolphins are so difficult to run against is because of the play of these two defensive tackles in the middle. Perhaps the Dolphins could afford to lose one of these players in free agency and still remain a solid run defense. I just don't see them being able to lose both these players and remaining a dominant defense.

Soliai and Starks are two of the top DT's in the NFL and you just don't lose players like this and expect to continue to be as solid up the middle of the defense. I would love to see the Dolphins keep both of these players for at least another 3-4 years, but at worst at least one of these two DT's needs to be signed to a long term contract.

it's all about allocation. that's a lot of money tied up to the LB position. Misi is easily replaceable. you don't reward JAGs you replace them with draft picks.

Yeah, I just see this as Canter attempting to do his job...his job is to get the Fins to give Soliai a boatload of cash. So he's using social media to try to put pressure on the organization...I personally, would love to see Soliai return here. I think he's better than some fans give him credit for, but for now, we just have to wait and see. Not really a story here, just some guys going about doing their jobs...

There's a reason Ireland has had difficulties retaining many of his own free agents. Players don't like him and neither do their agents. Fans can keep pretending like it's not a problem. Instead we just throw our hands up in the air and say, "Gee, I don't know why Jake Long didn't want to be here. He must just be a giant *******."

  12. I think I know why Jake left but cant really back it up with anything more then conjecture. Why do you think it was about his relationship with Ireland? My impression is it was more about his relationship with Philbin.

The team hasn't had difficulty retaining its own free agents. They've set specific prices on them and been pretty unwilling to budge, which is absolutely the right thing to do. They've re-signed quite a few, including the specific player/agent combination in question. Not only that, but if what you're saying is true the Dolphins would logically have difficulty recruiting free agents- Which this off-season should be able to put in proper perspective for you.

We've had way more players who have been vocal about the Dolphins saying the right things to them to get them to sign than we have had guys who have been upset about it.

In theory, but the problem is we've got a lot of guys with expiring or one-year contracts. TE may certainly have to be addressed with a prime pick, as might a number of spots on the offensive line and perhaps even the secondary. Optimally, you replace guys with players you've drafted and developed for a few years, but I don't know if we're in that position yet, hence Ireland's reliance on free agents. And truthfully, while he's not a superstar I think Misi has developed past being a JAG.

Neither Starks nor Soliai are top defensive tackles. They're pretty good, but they're not close to the JJ Watts, Geno Atkins, Kyle Williams, Haloti Ngatas, etc. They are very much replaceable players, and while you could most certainly do worse, you could also do better- Soliai especially.

Then how do we have enough players to field a team? Misi and Jones recently resigned. Why would they do that?

In that situation, Elway/Demoff were right and the agent did a great job. They -- primarily Jack Elway -- didn't trust ownership. A year later, the Colts fled Baltimore in the middle of the night and Ernie Accorsi quit over the way ownership handled the Elway situation.

Nothing wrong with working to make money. Some guys are nefarious. But a lot of agents are fair and genuinely serve a purpose. Some teams absolutely will absolutely take advantage of a player if they can get away with it. We see it all the time.

I don't have the confidence in AS that you do. I've seen enough off the mark quotes from a "source" through him to take his tweets with a grain of salt.
