I know most people probably connected the dots by now that Brian Hartline seems to (for whatever reason) own defensive coordinator Ray Horton's coverage scheme, but for those of you who would like to know WHY, here is a piece for you.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...e-receiver-brian-hartlines-week-1-performance

This one was a bit long in the birthing because of some technical difficulties with the pictures on the website.

But hey, it's NOT a slide show, so there's that. :)

Read this earlier today. Really good read. The real question is though -Will Hartline continue to own 2nd DBs?

He's got a nice "all weather" skill set in terms of his ability to get open with his route running.

He can get open consistently on those comeback patterns against tight man coverage. He also presents himself quickly on speed outs against off coverage. I thought that route he ran in the final section in particular was nifty. He essentially faked the stop-and-go and turned it into a comeback or out route. With that kind of coordination he should be able to run shake routes and dino routes and whatnot.

The thing he just doesn't really do is get yards after catch. He'd be a complete receiver if he could do that.

Agreed. One thing I noticed is that Wallace doesnt seem to be as quick as hartline in presenting himself to the qb on his routes. Not sure if that's more a product of the specific routes he's running or what. I think it's going to take a combination of better oline play and time for Tannehill to develop a legit rapport with Wallace. He just doesn't seem comfortable waiting the extra second or so for Wallace to break on his routes. Maybe deservedly so.im excited to see the next evolution of this stage on Sunday.

Good breakdown. It makes me wonder though if what's good for Hartline is always good for the rest of the offense. Helping on Wallace and Gibson and limiting them means you have bank more on Brian. This is where you need the TE

Agreed, also I've seen Omar make disparaging remarks on multiple occasions in regards to The Bleacher Report.
He's obviously threatened by real journalism.

Omar actually tweeted out my article a few hours ago, unbidden. He's come a long way, lol.

I was DM'ing with him prior to taking the B/R job. I told him about the offer. He advised me very strongly that I should do it because they have a scary good business plan but sorely need credibility, in his words.

Ya I saw yesterday how far he's come...talking about "Can the Dolphins overcome the locker room drama." No thanks...he's just as useless to fans and the organization as usual.

He knows about sorely needing credibility...expert at it.

That said...congrats again at the gig, you're good for it.

Damn, I haven't made it to the article, I'm so addicted to these Billick videos you linked. Been watching them all for about 45 minutes now. Harvin from the slot is next, then Wide 9 and Route Adjustment.

Thanks... looking forward to the article once I can get to it!!!

Hartline is playing at a high level right now. Wouldn't surprise me to see him make the Pro Bowl this year.

He doesn't have good YAC because when he gets open, which is almost consistently, its always only about a yard at most. That isn't enough room for a guy with his lack of speed to break away. You give most SPEEDY WR that 1-2 yard gap and once the ball is in their hands they just created another 2 yards of separation due to acceleration. Hartline for one can't do that and two always seems to fall when he tries to move with the ball in his hands. He honestly does get open OFTEN for a slow WR. If you watch most teams in teh NFL, on a deep route, whether the WR is good or not, they can create about a 2 yard window to catch and run but Hartline, and every Miami WR outside of Wallace can't do that.

Even on the TD catch, that had to be a perfect throw because the separation he had was only about 1 yard.

This I don't agree with, he creates more than enough separation, he is sure handed, and his YPC avg is consistently over 14.5 ypc, the problem so far from what I've seen is Tannehill just is not quite accurate enough on deeper passes, meaning in stride and on target.

If one looks at the Wallace picture thread, he has separation THill just misses him

You really think Hartline is good after the catch, but Tannehill is holding his YAC back?

I don't agree, but if Wallace's YAC this year is *drastically* lower than in Pitt you may have a point.

Yep, way I see it, Hartline and THill showed great chemistry on that TD, ball was on target and he did not have to break stride to catch it, other passes Hartline was not led in that manner.

I suspect fans may be a touch disappointed with Tannehill to Wallace this yr, especially earlier in the year.

No, I like Hartline, but the main reason for his lack of YAC is that he tends to fall down while making the catch and that his best route is the comeback. The accuracy thing on RT is way overblown. He is one of the more accurate passers in the game. It's one of those canned statements like "he locks on to receivers" that gets repeated like it's gospel.

People don't pay enough attneiton to wide receivers lower bodies as they catch, imo. Everyone gets so wrapped up in watching the ball and the receivers hands that fans forget to assess the receivers' lower body control. How balanced do they stay? How athletic are they at catching so they are positioned smoothly to continue running? Do they tend to leave their feet unneccesarily and lose leg drive and acceleration?

Bess, for instance, right back to his Hawaii film, showed a habit of leaving his feet on almost every catch, including every one that was easily within grasp. He jumped when he didn't need to. Well, he hopped up in the air a bit. I would guess it helped him focu on the catch. The down side was he lost a millisecond of time he could have been generating force and momentum.

Hartline, if you observe him, narrows his base as he catches. For some reason he likes to bring his feet close together. While this is great for toe-tapping a sideline, its terrible for maintaining balance after the catch. This is why he goes to the ground so easily the moment there is contact and he is jostled. He becomes like a top, standing on one point instead of two.

Great article and thanks for sharing!

I think Hartline's game is really under appreciated by many. He's not the sexy fast or big WR that many of the talking heads fall in love with. Throughout the history of the NFL, guys who didn't have crazy measurables had successful careers become masters of route running, the mental game, effort and having great hands. That's why I love his game so much. Now that Wallace can take away most of the attention I think Hartline is going to blow by last years numbers.

Our assignments let us know which are to be slide shows and which not. The content management system makes it difficult to add pictures, charts, tables, tweets, etc to the slides on a slideshow and both the Wednesday X's and O's piece and the Thursday preview piece are supposed to take full advantage of those things so they have to be standard.

That Tannehill locked on receivers in college and last year for us gets repeated because it's true. Look at the ints last year- a great example is the pic at one of the Jets games last year- I think the one down here. Right sideline, Tannehill telegraphs
his intentions, stares down receiver- I think Fasano , not sure. The Safety reads him like a book and breaks to the sideline, takes it to the house iirc.

Couldn't agree more with all of the above.

Although the one nit I'd have is that the 12 yard comeback is traditionally supposed to be considered a play where you can get a good amount of YAC. Well, according to videos I've seen of wide receivers coaches talking about it, anyway.

To follow up on this, someone mutually asked Omar and I who we think would be good to use as a spy on Luck and I replied back that I like Olivier Vernon for that role. Omar replied the following:

I don't think he naturally hates Bleacher Report or feels threatened by it. I've actually heard him speak pretty glowingly about B/R's business plan and google footprint, all that. He just, like many people, wanted to see more credible authors. I personally think that process of adding more credible authors started probably at least a year ago, maybe longer. But it takes a while for the public to notice that.

And truthfully I think B/R shoots themselves in the foot in that respect with their choice of topics to write about. It can be very gimmicky at times and often far too broad in scope, to where you know this author had a short amount of time to research and write about a topic that could inspire encyclopedias, and therefore what you're getting is a mile wide and inch deep. The topics themselves sometimes don't allow for much exploration of detail without the pieces coming out unbalanced.

To be fair, the constant slideshows can be tedious on B/R, but they can also also be entertaining as well sometimes (well, I like them occasionally!). It's getting the balance right between serious articles and fun slideshow-type ones that they need to work on.

hartline's great catching ability is also his YAC downfall in my opinion. He's catching balls that people of his athletic ability might not be able to catch. He goes balls out to catch that ball. And also he's really easy to knock down. He's not going to muscle anyone in this league.
