I was thrilled with RT's performance this game. There were very few bad passes/bad decisions. As I watch the elite QBs around the league I regularly see at least as many bad passes/bad decisions form those guys. Comparatively RT just throws so few risky or inaccurate passes. I also loved it when Matthews got into that little scrum during that late drive and RT ran over and shoved him back towards the bench. That showed a high level of awareness and leadership. I look at guys like Ryan and Flacco who have developed into really good QBs and they were nowhere near as capable back in their second year starting. Those guys were on good teams and had a lot of wins but if you watch their games when the running game struggled you saw that they couldn't carry their teams. It took them four or five years to start carrying the team like RT did yesterday. Really the only criticism I had of RT this game is that he walked into a couple of those sacks. I'd really like him to improve his movement in the pocket.
Agreed. Glad you mentioned the incident with Matthews... you have to love seeing that. Not only is it good that he did that... but it also shows his level of comfort stepping up and being that leader. Leadership ability is one of the most important parts to being a QB (other than, you know, being able to throw a football)... and to see him in his first game of his 2nd season stepping up like that was fantastic to see. One of the other things I loved seeing was how well he seemed to be going through his progressions and/or looking off safeties and backers to help open up throwing lanes. He isnt locking on to WRs and is using his eyes very well. He did step up a couple times into a sack that could have been avoided... but he looks improved from last season which is great to see. As someone mentioned... picking up 3rd and 7+ didnt seem like an insurmountable distance like it has for so many of our previous QBs.
I know many will think I'm putting too much stock into one game, but I truly believed Tannehill turned the corner yesterday. It truly became his team yesterday, IMO. He willed that offense to win. He took charge. He took charge of the players, like with Mathews. Even his presser after the game, was different. It was more natural, more confident. He even dismissed Wallace's grumpiness in a way that showed he understands it, but isn't too worried about it. I really believe Tannehill became THE man yesterday.
How about the fact that Andrew Luck is getting more praise from the sports media for barely beating a pretty bad Raiders team? And throwing for < 200 yards in the process. I know he did alright, but in my estimation Tannehill's effort was better yesterday. Edited to add: Can't wait for next week. Ryan will have a real chance to showcase his goods again against Andrew Luck and company. Terrelle Pryor had himself an ok day throwing the ball on the Colts so I think Tannehill should have plenty of opportunities.
All the metrics have Luck down as super-clutchy. In good news though, Tannehill is also ranked top 10 for WPA/EPA.
In the preseason it was the opposite. He flushed outside on several plays when he should have stepped up in the pocket. My guess is that those preseason mistakes were pointed out and he reacted accordingly. As his experience grows he should learn to improve his response. That's what I see in RT that gives me so much confidence in him. He clearly learns from his mistakes. The critics who just look at the final outcome aren't seeing the big picture. This is a QB who rarely repeats his mistakes. If you have a guy with so much natural physical ability who keeps eliminating things he does poorly, you eventually end up with a very good QB. And it's not like the progress is slow either. This guy is eliminating mistakes at an incredible pace.
i think he played a good game too, but he was lucky that he didn't had 3 INT's instead of one, 2 deep throws that should have been picked off were dropped, its about time we catch some breaks as well
Yesterday's game brought a lot of relief for me personally. I was irrationally worried that Tannehill would regress like Henne did in 2010 after his first year as the team's QB in 2009. Even though they are entirely different players, I was still worried. Henne's regression in 2010 was painfully obvious in the first game of the season, even though Miami won. I think it was against the Vikings? Now in 2013 I believe it's not only very obvious Tannehill has not regressed, but that he's vastly improved from where he was last season.
To put a finer point on the whole, "he doesn't look off defenders" or "he locks on to receivers" bull **** that permeates every football message board, I submit proof you have no idea where the QB is looking watching broadcast footage. I made this argument before and got blasted for it. The simple fact of the matter is, during broadcast footage the only thing people see is the QB's head and think wherever its pointed is where he's looking. That is not true now nor has it ever been true. Every last one of us can turn our to the side and still look back in another direction. Anyway, Tannehill proved in after game interview he saw both Wallace and Hartline on the TD play even though they were on opposite sides of the field and then here's the other proof: Not a single person watching this game through the broadcast would have thought Ryan was looking to his right. You cannot see the eyes from that angle they show on TV.
I dunno, I really like Tanny so far, I just think we were fairly vanilla in that first game...worked for the win so I'm all good with that, but I expect more diversity in the offense. Tanny's numbers were great considering no running help. 24/38, 272 yds, 1/1 TD-Int, 82.3 rating. I'll take that rating, especially this early, because I fully believe it will improve over the season. Watching this Philly-Washington game, we made the better choice. I know I know...small sample and all that, but I'm expecting a serious sophomore slump for RG3 this year, and this just feeds that. He's 5/11, 53 yds with a pick, 22.2 rating after the first half.
I take umbrage with this. Solly Wilcox..the best in the damn business was on the call. He did an amazing job clarifying how well RT works through his progression, uses his eyes, and finds the open WR. Solly is at the top of his craft right now. He explained it. If people chose not to listen...I love that guy
I think Fin's more referring to posters and maybe some other people in the media, but you're absolutely right they did a good job in game of explaining the damn fine job Tannehill was doing going through his progressions.
Man you're not kidding. RG3 looks awful. He looks rattled, very tentative and lacking in confidence. He also took a shot and start grimacing. IMO if they're going to purposely limit his running and handcuff him, his confidence will take a huge hit and will permeate to the passing game. However, having him run wild like last year will surely end his career. Doesn't look good. I hope he figures this out, I like the kid.
Yeah, RGIII being this bummy is a real head scratcher. Sophomore slump? Sometimes you give defenses an offseason to look at the tape and these young QBs look a little more human, especially the ones that rely on their legs.
The best part is we didn't dig too deep into the offensive playbook. He only faked the read option a couple times but didn't actually run it. There were no roll outs, barely any screens (and the way Cleveland was coming at him they could have used it more). The team clearly didn't want to unleash things all at once.
I think its just a lot of rust right now, and they're up against a defense that they haven't seen anything from yet.
DVOA rankings are now up at http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb and Tannehill is ranked 11th overall after week 1.
I'm going to try to (as time permits) keep track of this and his WPA/EPA on a weekly basis so some of the math-y posters we have can make use of that data however they want to.
Griffin also got his *** kicked and was thrown down or body slammed several times. Also he has no idea how to avoid hits or smartly go down prior to taking a shot. Those beatings take a toll and affect a QBs play. He could very well end up getting knocked out of a game before mid-season...
Vanilla or no vanilla, I just want them to win. I agree that Tannehill stepped up and delivered in the second half to carry the team. The next 4 games will be the real test for him. The thing I like is the players seem to respect him. Hartline and Marshall always said the right thing, but when Henne over threw them you could see they had that "eff this guy, he sucks" look and body language. I'm glad he seems to be getting the respect from teammates. I'd even like him to have a little of that Marino attitude. The, I didn't over throw you, you didn't run far enough moxie. Just take total command of this team.
I thought he took command really nicely when he told Mathews to GET THE @%$% off the field, when Mathews was trying his best to draw a personal foul in a won game. liked that take charge moment most of all.
They'll be better off.... I think, if Tannehill takes the blame, like Manning does most of the time. Just so there isn't any bickering in the huddle. "My bad, we'll get them next time. " forget it & go on to the next play. That last one isn't going to do anything for you regardless who is right, or who is wrong.
319 1TD 0 INT Brings the TD/INT ratio to 2/1. Moving in the right direction. Only 1 TD pass, but led multiple TD drives. Lost the fumble, but made up for it. Another great game. Outdueled Andy Luck. Time for Tannehill to start getting some respect!
Great performance. Two areas to improve: - Would have liked to see him put the game away on the last drive he had. That came back and bit him in the *** at TAMU. Luckily our D is better. - Another TD next time pls. But his decision were great. Pocket presence noticeably better as he STEPPED UP several times.
I think we should be tracking Tannehill's accuracy too. I said I expected 60%+ completions this year, because I felt that in today's NFL that's the bare minimum for being acceptable from a franchise QB. Through two games so far he's over 65%, and if not for drops it could be even higher. Most of his passes have been well on target, so hopefully he keeps it up. His YPA is up over 7 so far this year as well.
Tannehill is holding the ball entirely too long. He got better later in the game but man alive, a few of those sacks could have been avoided just by having the internal alarm clock go off. Also, three fumbles today. Only one lost, but that needs to be addressed. Otherwise, I am loving his progression and the ability to make plays when they absolutely have to.
That's true. Ultimately the wins and losses are all that matters. But we could have said the same thing about Chad Henne in 2010. He played pretty lousy in those 2 games. It's really nice to be 2-0 and have the QB be a really big part of it.
That throw to Clay between Angerer and Bethea was the nicest I've seen from a Dolphin QB...possibly in my life. Fouts being an idiot said it was almost an INT, but I'm not sure what he was watching.
Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero Ryan Tannehill outplayed Andrew Luck today. Completed 23 of 34 for 319. 107.4 QB rating. Luck was 25of 43 for 321. 1 TD, 1 INT. 79.7 rating.
He was a Clay burst of speed and a half yard by Wallace from going 3/0 today. While Luck was Clemons hands of stone and Grimes holding onto one from throwing 3 INT.
