He has played two games so far this season and he already is on the injury report with a sore shoulder. The OL has to do a better job of protecting him and he needs to develop more pocket awareness. The Colts really don't have a top defense and they were able to put a lot of pressure on Tannehill because of the play of the OL.

I don't really see anyway Tannehill can stay healthy and play in all the games this season if he continues to get hit as often as he has in the past two games. Hopefully the OL will pick up its play starting this week and Tannehill will throw the ball away when he is under pressure and can't find an open receiver. Right now though, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Matt Moore doesn't end up starting some games this season because Tannehill is injured.

You guys make a good point, I hope it IS a matter of the fact that he's just got so much to think about consciously that his instinct or feel for where the rush is coming from is being dulled. I think it is a sign, that he does delay when he finally decides to run, that he may in fact be switching gears mentally and if it is that, I think it's a good sign. When he gets to the point that he's not consciously focused on his progressions and ball placement and all that, he may be able to "focus" more on the rushers around him.

That needs to happen soon, or he'll be in the trainers room more than on the practice field. IN this game I am looking for a few things:

    1) Tannehill's pocket awareness. Does he sense pressure? Does he move away from it or towards it? This is the biggest thing he needs to work on.
    2) Is he willing to throw the ball away instead of taking the sack/hit. Sometimes it's better to NOT be the hero, if it'll cost your team their QB.

Well no offense to the NFL but I got to wonder what they consider a hit. The math just doesn't add up. Tannehill's dropped back 82 times. 1 of those was a run. So if you go by the NFL's numbers he's been sacked/hit 1 in every 3.86 drop backs. That just doesn't seem right at all based on just purely watching the games. By PFF numbers it's 1 in 6.2 which makes a heck of a lot more sense based on what we watched.

The only math the NFL is good at is profit...and they got that down.

Dunno, dude, but either way, with the sacks plus hits it's too much, imo.

I wish we could verify. I mean, if anyone wants to watch the condensed version of the game replays online with all 22 view and count how many times Ryan gets hit/sacked, that'd be the most reliable method. I don't think that's worth doing unless the troubling trend continues this weekend.

    Watch CK do it ;p

I know he's taking too many sacks/hits...but 1 in 4 just seems too much.

Atlanta has 2 sacks on the year. If they pile up 3 or 4 themselves. Philbin has to make a change though.

I don't think changing personnel is happening at this point.

The solution would be to teach Tanny to be more aware of pressure and avoid it/get the ball out, to call shorter pass plays and screens more often, and to keep more RB/TE help in to block (though their missed blocks are part of the problem).

    Update:

After 3 games Ryan Tannehill has been sacked 14 times and hit another 19 times for a total of 33 impacts.

Over 16 games that is 75 sacks, 101 additonal QB hits, for a total of 176 impacts over the season.

By comparison, Tom Brady is on pace for 112.

    Update

Tannehill sacked 18 times in 4 games, hit another 29 times.

That's 11.75 impacts per game (plus any runs).

Projects to 188 times Tanny gets smoked this season. (we're actually getting worse, not better on this projection).

Btw, we are tied with Jacksonville for most sacks given up.

No. He is taking way to many hits early in the season. He is a big dude but they have to drastically reduce the number of hits he is taking.

He's getting hit David Carr style, hope this line doesn't ruin him.

I don't want to speak for Sec and the others but I get the sense a few are thinking "jinx" more than valid/invalid question.

    Gotta revisit this.

The Oline and general protection by RBs and TEs is no better.

Clearly Tanehill will continue to take a beating. Fortunately the bye will will allow his body to recover somewhat. But Matt Moore sees the field this season if there is not a radical change in Oline play.

This thread is more relevant now than when you first started it. Tannehill is taking a merciless pounding and at the rate he is getting hit he wont finish the season. Benching Clabo would help, I just hope they don't stick with him like they did with Columbo. People keep talking about pocket awareness, and yes he does need improvement. But, its hard to move anywhere in the pocket when the pocket is collapsing all around him and its happening quickly. I really don't think anyone thought this OL would be this bad this season.

I don't think he's at heightened risk of being hurt from these types of sacks.

Agree its a problem. The problem was there to see when I started the thread too, but when we're winning people don't like to hear about things that urgently need improvement.

The hit and sack pace Ryan is on now is the same as when this first came up.

Moving forward, I dont see a radical personnel move happening. I dont see the players radically improving overnight.

That leaves scheme and coaching decisions as the only option. Sherman either starts to run more draws and screens to slow the rush, and roll Tannehill out or at least coach him that he doesnt have to stay in the pocket anymore...

Or he get 'moidered' for the rest of the season. And eventually hurt.

IMO its on Sherman to not be obstinate and stubborn about keeping Tannehill in there (Philbin has said they prefer he not run when pressure comes). Time to change. But Will Sherman adjust enough, or only a little?

I just cant see Ross not putting a ton of pressure on them to fix the line......theres to much at stake with the team this YEAR...to have the season go down the drains because of it.

If they dont get it fixed...and we loose Tannehill to injury...I think we are in store for some changes at the ownership level. I dont know how much more patience Ross is gonna have.....and I think it will be very hard VERY hard to get fans back in the seats.....

At this rate no I really don't believe he will.

The hits that matter for a quarterback in terms of getting hurt are sacks, hits as he's throwing the ball, and run plays where a guy doesn't give himself up.

Sacks, I think we all know what's happened there. He's taking the most sacks per game in the league. He's taken two hits as he was throwing the football. He's also had 11 run plays which includes 4 scrambles, 2 actual called runs, 3 QB sneaks, and 2 poor snaps where he was tackled in the backfield recovering the ball.

I don't think he's slid a single time on any of those plays. I could be wrong. I don't remember a slide.

Altogether you've got 37 pretty dangerous hits in 5 games. That's a lot. It definitely has to get down otherwise he's going to get hurt.

Runs might save his butt and some play action fakes might buy him some time eh?

The only slide I remember came after he had fumbled in the New Orleans game after scrambling. There was a play where he ran or scrambled to the right for about five or six yards, and then he slid right before getting hit. I remember telling the folks that I was watching the game with, "At least he learned from the last scramble."

Of course, the very next game against the Ravens he runs to the right and doesn't slide... so maybe I was a bit premature. It might not be the first time...:shifty:

We have had too many experiences and examples over the years of coaches, GMs etc who have made obvious mistakes in personnel but have refused to acknowledge it or change it. There's plenty to choose from but the best example I can recall from the immediate past is the Columbo era. I know Wannstedt made a ton of them. I thought we were past that point with some of the moves this staff have made recently such as Brandon Marshal, Reggie Bush and Jake Long although not everybody believed those acquisition's were mistakes, me included. But I thought they were acknowledging that those personnel moves were wrong or mistakes. Unless he improves drastically I see Clabo being one of those examples if they stick with him. John Jerry could also figure into that equation. I guess we will see what happens, or maybe Clabo and Jerry will miraculously improve and finally be serviceable.
