There are countless successful enterprises that are based on process rather than results.

Either way, wins and losses is really only part of the equation. There is the entire financial angle. You need to judge the quality of the product, but also the cost to produce that product. When you consider that Ireland is working $20M+ under the salary cap, you have to figure that Stephen Ross is more than happy to have that cash in his pocket.

Now would probably be a good time to point out that Sparano got a 2 year extension and that didn't stop him from getting fired. Hopefully this will prevent overreactions from both sides of the great Ireland debate.

This is great news. Just think how close we were to Carl Peterson. That would have been hell.

Ireland really has done a nice job since Parcells left. He can't draft an OL to save his life, but aside from that he's been really on point the last few years with the majority of his moves, especially with our salary cap.

Where is it? This has gotten old and frankly I'm sick of reading it. Look at this team now, in the 2nd year under a good HC/OC/DC and our level of talent, then look at all the players Sparaniot got rid of and how well they are doing elsewhere. It's as plain as the nose on your face, but many just hate Ireland so much they can't see the forest for the trees.

I'm not ready to anoint Ireland as ready for the HOF, but even I can see this guy has grown into a decent GM, it doesn't take a guru to realize that.

I thought Steve Ross would have to feel some urgency about making a stay-or-go evaluation of Jeff Ireland this year, because it hadn't been reported that he'd received the 1-year extension. That's why I thought if the Dolphins start off 2-0, Ross may begin those negotiations immediately.

But with the extension in place during the off season, allowing Jeff Ireland to make decisions with the long term future of the program in mind rather than everything being about now, now, now...I think Steve Ross is going to be patient and allow the entire 2013 season to play out before he makes a stay-or-go evaluation.

Ross expects a playoff team and I think if he doesn't get one, he'll terminate Ireland's contract one year early. But if he does get one, I think we're looking at a 3- to 5-year extension.

Gotta say, I'm OK with this. I think he's earned the extra season by any objective measure. He's not the demon many make him out to be, and I think a lot of his negative rep comes from the Dez incident, which - yes - he brought on himself.

Still, his overall record is OK on the low-end, and possibly very good in time. Not to mention RT, which is kind of a big deal. And - no - it wasn't an obvious choice.

I was never an Ireland fan in the past, but I like his last two drafts enough to be OK with this extension. Not to mention, look at the results so far this season. How many of Ireland's fingerprints were all over that win yesterday for example!

At this point, the dude deserves at least another offseason, if not more. That's the only level-headed way to look at this IMHO.

I have been one of the most anti-Ireland individuals on this forum. I admit I am surprised Ross extended Ireland's contract prior to this season, but with all the money he has, it was only going to cost him a couple of million dollars to buy out the contract if the Dolphins weren't a success this year.

I went into this season with the belief that Ireland should be retained if the Dolphins win at least nine games and should be fired if they win eight games or less. I still feel that way. Right now Ireland certainly deserves credit for the players he has added to the roster over the past few years. Philbin has also proved to be a major upgrade over Sparano. So with six more wins this season, I'll be ready to jump on the Ireland bandwagon, but not until then.

I'm only speaking for myself, but there is just no truth to this whatsoever. I'll admit to being a pretty big Ireland detractor. But I've been a Dolphins fan since I have conscious memories of watching football and there is just no way whatsoever I would let my personal opinions of the Front Office dictate whether or not I enjoy seeing my favorite sports team win or lose. If you honestly believe fans that spend such a huge amount of time on this board and others discussing these Miami Dolphins would be upset with a deep playoff run then you're delusional.

3-0. Ross is looking prescient if we make the playoffs. Teams that start 3-0 make the playoffs 75% of the time.

People love to hate on Ross but I see nothing wrong with him. His only huge blunder was not firing Sparano before courting Harbaugh. Season was doomed after that.

I was anti-Ireland but said he has this year to win me over.
    So far he's winning ...

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. When the season started I thought a 9 win or better season would and should save Ireland's job. Nothing has changed. At 3-0, this team is well on their way to reaching that mark. With each game, it's becoming more and more apparent that Ireland has found the most important piece of the puzzle that any GM has to find, that being a franchise QB.

Although if this turnstile line Ireland has cobbled together continues to get said franchise QB hammered every Sunday or even worse, hurt for an extended length of time, I wonder if fans will continue to cheer for his continued employment?

Dude is a self made billionaire and people question his business acumen. Prior results don't guarantee future performance but this dude wants to win and of course protect his investment. He's not meddling like Snyder or Jones.

It all makes sense now doesnt it? Surprised we as a community didnt have at least one of us predict that Ireland got a one year extension this offseason.

Pretty good timing on the announcement. Lol.

Before we got here, we had high school players on board. He has taken a little time, but now we have NFL players.

I think he first drafted guys with high floors only and not high ceilings. This would be a smart way to build a team because at least you can have depth and be competitive (if not win). Maybe one or two of those guys continue to improve and you get something special (Soliai). Now that we have enough high floor guys, we can go after boom or bust guys. From here on out, we will have to juggle both kinds of players. Probably with more high floor guys and a few high ceiling guys (a 60/40 split).

That seems like the logical course of action. Ross knows who was previously responsible for what within the organization during our losing streak that the rest of us weren't privy to, but now sufficient time has passed to start fairly and accurately assessing Ireland on his own merit. IMO the promise of a brighter future has seemed in place since last year, enough so to confidently extend Ireland's contract an extra year when knowing what his elaborate plans were for this offseason, but not confidently enough to extend him multiple years b/c the product still has to prove itself on the field.

WADR, I slightly disagree. The coaching staff as a whole I'd say. Ireland made some slick, nice moves and put us in a seriously ENVIABLE cap position, which says much about his ability behind the scenes.

It may sound rah-rah or whatever, but to me its a team effort between several people in the organization, and then there's the team...

Hmph, 5 years under his control and Tampa is still losing. Lucky for us Ireland seems to have Miami turned around by the start of year 3.
So why exactly are your panties still so far up your rear? You must be one of those people who form a belief and then would rather change everything around that belief in order to maintain it rather than changing the belief itself, regardless of how inaccurate it is.

  37. I do not complexly disagree with this. I have never been really up or down on Ireland. I have always felt him to be fairly average as a GM. I think the two biggest difference makers have been Philbin and RT. I think Sherman deserves the credit for bringing RT. I do agree that they all deserve some degree of credit though. In any case I am very happy with how this season has gone so far. No reason to rock the boat by changing GMs. I like the 1yr extension, it keeps him hungry.

OK. Go figure that the Jeff Ireland thread is about to turn into another Jeff Ireland thread. Actually kind of shocking it took this long, after all it's a Jeff Ireland thread.

But with that, I'm out of it.

People know what I think. But when I say it and argue it that's when I get know-it-all's trying to very nicely pretend I have no ability to analyze or predict the Dolphins because I have an opinion that runs a certain way with respect to one aspect of the organization, the team's general manager.

It shouldn't have to be, at least not after a promising 3-0 start. That should be enough to squash everything until further notice. BTW, I personally don't have you lumped into that "squash everything until further notice" category.
