For what it's worth from a Saints fan, I thought it was excellent and objective analysis. And well written by Bleacher Report standards. I posted it on SaintsReport.

At work in the plants today, so can't have my phone on me. Not enough time to read it now as lunch is almost over, but I'll look this evening when I get home.

    worst article ever

Seriously though please keep sharing these pieces. If more writers followed a more informative style like this perhaps we'd actually learn a few things.

Thanks. B/R is trying hard to revamp the image people have of prolific but low quality content. They've made a bunch of semi-expensive to expensive hires in order to get that image turned around. I'm thankful to be part of that wave.

Making NFL "analysts" look more stupid with every article published. Keep it going. This is great stuff and for the average fan with limited time and or knowledge, is a great way to quickly prepare for what may transpire on Monday.

I happen to think highly of Clayborn, more highly than I do of guys on our D being able to replicate. Possibly having Jordan spy Graham, but that opens up other problems

Sorry if I sound like Padre in this post, I don't have a lot of time atm

Your analysis on Brees and third-and-long was an eye-opener. In his tenure with Sean Payton, Brees has been excellent on third-and-long - almost to the point where it wasn't that statistically significant. I'm hoping that this season's departure from that, so far, is just a product of the slow start on offense and not a broader trend of decline in that very important statistic.

I think highly of Clayborn as well. I didn't mean to imply that Vernon could replicate the pass rush that Clayborn was able to achieve. But there were other problems that his standing up caused for the Saints offense, and I think our guys (even Vernon, whom people know I don't think particularly highly of) can reproduce. And it's good to note that Clayborn didn't necessarily tear them up in pass rush either.

Was eye opening for me as well.

He had a little more trouble on 3rd & 6+ in 2010 as well, but you're right he was fine in 3rd & Long virtually all other years.

The pay probably wouldn't be worth switching to full time.

Compared to his current job at least, which was something related to finance IIRC.

I think this season it is a combination of weaker than usual line play (Brees is hurried either in actuality or in his internal time clock), and inconsistency from the receiving corps.

Pretty much right on the money here.

They had to make me a pretty significant (for a part time writing gig) offer to get me to accept as is, and I consider this just a 15 to 20 hour per week gig (I was hoping to make it only 10 hours...just hasn't worked out that way).

Awesome article. Everyone forgets the Tampa game, they easily coulde've lost that one. You could chalk it up to looking past a bad team....but the Saints are not perfect, and if we want to contend with New England, this is a game we need to test our mettle against.

I guess I could slip in a sentence that says, "Miami should make an effort to run the football successfully."

But that would seem a bit obvious.

I tried to stick with significant keys that have a little bit more than just obvious value. I talk about the Saints' ground game because A) They're moving off Mark Ingram to Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson, B) There are specific tendencies in the way they operate their ground game and specific things Miami can do especially in Paul Soliai's absence to defeat the run given those tendencies, and C) Drew Brees is not having a good year trying to operate from 3rd & Long.

When it comes to the other side of the ball I could say, "Miami needs to run the ball" but that's the biggest duh statement ever, and the Saints defense probably won't make it all that difficult to run the football so long as you give your quarterback latitude to get out of obvious bad plays, which is something I mentioned. The Saints are allowing 5.3 yards per carry, second-worst in the league. I guess I could have mentioned that nugget but it just wasn't that big a priority as far as tips and notes for the game planning stage of the game.

I'm just wary of "game plans" that basically list three things that you always want to do in every game, and don't really explain any special reason why you need to do them or why the tip is more appropriate in this game than others.

    OCD moment. Mettle.

I know this because I just used the same term in one of my previous articles and I had to google it to make sure I was using it right.

Yes I do that all the time. Even for message board posts.

Another good article...so far I've found that your recaps / previews of games thus season has helped me immensely in staying sane / calm about this team and the status of each game. Your analysis is spot on and informative. Something something keep it up, good work.

Are we wearing aqua? I've noticed that we've worn the same color jerseys on game day as the offense wears during practice that week. Pics from yesterday show the offense in aqua...

Great stuff, but of course I'm a giant sucker for any sort of statistical splits. One thing I found interesting is that Brees' YPA was higher on blitz plays than on non-blitzes. One would expect the opposite due to increased pressure, you'd think he'd hit more short routes for a lower YPA on blitzes.

I don't have a subscription to the PFF data but I'd be interested in his time to throw attempt on blitzes/non-blitzes. Does he typically get it out on blitzes quicker for a higher YPA or is his offensive line protecting him well enough to where he has the same time on blitz plays that he does on non-blitz plays? I'm sure there's a whole rabbit hole you could go down there, mostly just a curiosity of mine.

Actually in my experience YPA is generally higher versus the blitz. You've got bigger holes in the coverage and not as many defenders around to force check downs.

But completion percentage goes down, interception percentage goes up, and overall passer rating goes down by about a point or two.

I wouldn't even know where to start. It's a local chemical plant to which I was referring. Typically in them and refineries you're not allowed to have your phone in the units or possibly in the plant gates at all.

The play Watson made for Tampa Bay was really good, but I'm not sure we have any LBs who would make that play (perhaps I'm over-estimating their aggressiveness). I hope we try and get on Graham early at the line to throw off his timing and rhythm, but I wonder if they wouldn't try and stack players like we did vs Indy in order to free him up (i realize he isn't the burner Wallace is, but he's plenty dangerous IMO).

I think this game comes down to one thing, and that is do the dolphins have the mental focus to make plays under the pressure of a severe home field advantage, that venue and seattle are the toughest places to play a game, its really not even up for debate anymore of how serious the home field advantage is, if you don't make plays early to lower their enthusiasm level, which alters the noise level, your toast, watch the first quarter, if we can hang and you see our team making some plays early then it means our team is a legit bunch of tough bastards with a common goal that is very different then what we've come accustomed to, and it should be a competitive game throughout...bottom line, in that building, this kind of hype, only the strong will survive..

I don't think the play was especially athletic, but it was especially instinctive, which Dekoda Watson hasn't necessarily been known for over the years in the NFL.

Unfortunately, major newspapers don't want informative content like this. They want articles that the masses will read (like stuff about lockerroom drama) rather than technical breakdowns (like us football nerds enjoy).
