I really thought we were going to have an elite defence but that's far from the case. All the experts keeps saying how great our front seven is but with exception of the browns game we can't get any pressure on the qb.I was wrong about Vernon oliver he is mostly invisible and I thought odrick and starks were going to bring it on the inside but that has not been the case. Ellerbe and wheeler do not seem like upgrades from dasby and burnett. Is it the def cord or the talent?Very disappointed despite being 3-1.
When we signed Wheeler and Ellerbe I didn't think we upgraded our linebackers. I thought we got faster, but I didn't think it was an actual upgrade. I actually said it was a wash, like not an upgrade nor a downgrade. But after seeing Dansby make plays after plays in the Cardinals... Safe to say we downgraded.
Spending big money on 2 inside LBs who can't cover in a passing league wasn't too wise. Maybe we should have only signed Ellerbe and spent Wheeler's money on an OT
Unbelievable. not to discredit Brees and that machine of an offense but our coverage was horrible. We signed two linebackers who are supposed to be better in coverage. Miami was clearly out matched. Passes weren't complicated but Brees smelt blood in water. Completely tore up a very bad secondary.
Keep in mind our best player sat. The first jimmy Graham touchdown really pissed me off. Brent grimes avoided all contact and jimmy Graham was bobbling the ball, wouldn't even take much contact to knock it loose and brent was in perfect position to lay the wood. You could see reshad respond like dude wtf. That was a momentum shift.
I pin a lot of it on Coyle. His blitzes are very predictable and when you bring a lot of a gap pressure without dropping a dl to compensate some you weaken coverage at all levels.
When that A gap blitz fakes and has to chase it has to be faster. You can't leave Carroll on the island.. Kills you on the perimeter. 52 and 59 bounced out of that quite a bit tonight
See my thread in Club. Two weeks in a row Coyle's not been very prepared for what the opposition has been doing. And I agree about the blitzes.
Doesn't matter. If Coyle fakes pressure and then has his LB's chase it makes no sense. That TD before the half had Carroll and Jenkins on Sproles. That was ridiculous.
The talent is there it's the dc. I never like the hiring of coyle & always thought we should have went after an establish dc with a record of good defenses. Sense he's been the coordinator our run defense has been in steady decline
The D is quite obviously overrated. They aren't bad, but they are nowhere near elite. Hell, the Bucs held the Saints to 17 points. This was really a pitiful showing...embarrassing really, on both sides of the ball. Hope it doesn't destroy the team's morale. We don't need a hangover when we play Baltimore.
Baltimore has to be licking its chops. Defense not well prepared and not able to execute. Not a good combo. Full speed ahead to 8-8.
Any time you turn the ball over to a team like the Saints, you're going to give up a lot of points. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4
You need to realize that the best 5 defenses in the league can EASILY have 40 + points put up on them. The game has changed. The best defense is a good offense that can execute.
Not too many LBs anywhere in the game that can cover Jimmy Graham or deal with Darren Sproles in space.
3 of the first 4 games were against elite level QBs. They did look Brandon Weeden look rather silly. Do you think Geno Smith or EJ Manual or even Joe Flacco who got embarrassed by the Bills last week would have as much success?*I do really like our run defense and our DBs are playing rather well. Keep in mind Koa Misi is also injured. Also keep in mind 2 of the Saints TDs came off Turnovers. And by the end the game was lost so I doubt the Defense put as much effort as they would when the game was on the line. Going into the 4th quarter in the previous 3 games, the Dolphins defense was great.*
This. The defense had some nice sequences but was put on the field in sh-tty momentum-swing situations. On the road in a dome like that against one of the NFL's most explosive offenses, the defense is in trouble. Coyle did get schooled last night. No doubt about it. But I thought we could've hung in with that offense if Tanny protects the ball and if we did something coming out of halftime; that 3-and-out was just demoralizing after the first half ended like it did.
Let's see, just off the top of my head, the Jets were ranked 5th with a lot of talk about Rex Ryan's defense being back. Until they walked into that Tennessee Buzzsaw...lol. 38 to them. What do you think The Broncos would do to them? How about the Niners, out scored 56-10 over 2 weeks. The bears were considered to have a great, opportunistic D, but they gave up 40 to Detroit. The Bengals gave up 30 a week ago to Arodg. The Texans have given up a lot of points. The Ravens... And if you think Seattle couldn't go into NO or Green Bay and get 30 or 40 put up on them, you're mistaken.
And I have no idea who the top 5 defenses are, it probably depends which team is playing which. Seattle playing in Denver, is no longer a top 5 defense. No defense will line up and dominate every single week anymore.
First off, the Jets had a lot of those points scored off turnovers...fumbles returned for TDs. Second, San Francisco had more than one of their best defensive players out to injury. Third, I don't consider the Bears to have one of the top five defenses. And last, no, Seattle would not get a 40 spot on them even in NO. They are the best D in the NFL.
Its a shame that they still count points off turnovers. We may have won last night if they didn't. And it's just awful they don't handicap points, when your players are hurt. I mean, its so rare that a team has a player hurt.
But you know what, if you have an offense that can score, and control the clock, protect the ball, give you a rest....doesn't butt fumble even... well your defense may be a bit better for it. And that final score may sway in your favor.
Don't be a smartass. The point is, the Jets' defense didn't give up nearly 40 points, at least 14 points were scored by the Titans' defense off turnovers. And San Francisco's defense missing those players is akin to ours missing Brent Grimes and Cam Wake.
You think teams go into every game 100%? It is what it is. Offenses effect defenses immensely. Any defense can lay an egg with these rule changes, and how the talent stacks up on O. The Jets gave up 38 as a team. Who cares if the defense gave up 31 or 24 of those points. It was still a weak performance, against a far from "elite" team.
You're completely ignoring tannehills turnovers last night giving the saints 14+ pts. Why? He's not being a smart ***, he's right. Defenses are judged on the points against, it doesn't matter how they happened. Look at the ravens defense. Flacco throws 5 picks and they still only give up 23 pts to the bills? That's actually impressive
Ummm...the title and subject of the thread is our DEFENSE, so I would guess anyone who posts here cares.
Did the Saints' defense score those points or did their offense come out onto the field after a turnover and score them against our defense, who had the chance to hold them to a FG?
The Jets defense did not have a good game against the Titans. They let TN go 10/18 on 3rd down. That's terrible. Locker threw 3 TD's for Christ's sake. If they play that way against NO, they will have 49 put up on them.
I just got back home after flying in from New Orleans this morning. I was at the game last night and I don't believe having Wake in the game would have made one bit of difference in the outcome of this game. The secondary couldn't cover anyone and Wheeler and Ellerbe are a downgrade over Burnett and Dansby. In fact this defense is inferior to the 2012 defense overall. I think we were fooled by the first three games and now opponents have seen how to attack this defense. This team is probably talented enough to win eight games this season, but it is not a legitimate playoff contender. New Orleans is a very good team, but they made the Dolphins defense look like a high school team when it came to pass coverage. The coaching staff was completely out coached and they didn't make any changes to prevent the Saints from moving the ball at will. While I think Grimes is a solid CB, the rest of the secondary was below average. Jones has regressed since his play last year and Clemons has never been anything more than a below average safety in the NFL. He never makes any plays on the ball and he just isn't very good. That is why he had no other offers in free agency after the 2012 season. He has to be replaced after this season. Carroll is another secondary player who will make a play here and there, but is not a player who should be starting for any NFL team. The Dolphins first three picks in the 2013 draft were all on the defensive side of the ball. None of these draft picks have done anything to show that they were worthy of their selection. I keep reading how Jordan is going to be a great player. I don't want to read about it any more, I want to see it on the field. Last but not least, I think Wallace is the most overpaid player in the NFL. Other than the Colts game, he has basically been a no show for the other three games. I am beginning to have serious doubts about all these upgrades Ireland signed and drafted. With the defense taking a step backwards this season, the offense is going to have be much more productive going forward. I'm happy that they are 3-1 right now, but I think some of the games many people on here had already put in the win column, aren't so certain right now. I see them going 1-1 against the Bills and possibly 1-1 against the Jets. I also don't see this team being able to stop the Patriots offense. I think they will go 0-2 against the Patriots again this year.
