Not sure if it was discussed anywhere yet (if it was I didnt see it) but I'm wondering if Sturgis has any sort of injury. He kicks one out of bounds giving the Ravens the ball at the 40 then he misses badly on the 57 yarder. Granted it was a long attempt but both of those kicks were very uncharacteristic of him. Just wondering if there was anything more to it then just two bad kicks. The 57 yard attempt didnt appear to be blocked at all either.
I think he rushed himself. It was the first time he was in that position and he just wasn't ready for it. Good job by us putting him in one of the worst positions possible. As for the kickoff, he ****ed up.
I wasnt saying Sturgis was to blame. Was just wondering if there was a reason for those kicks. He's been money so far so he's allowed a bad day,if thats all it was.
Missing a 57 yarder is cause for concern.......um there are probably one or two kickers in the league that make that kick...maybe. He's been really good this year I don't get the over reaction to a flubbed kickoff and an all but impossible kick being missed. If it becomes routine then its cause for concern but he didn't lose this game for us.
You say over reaction like anyone is worked up, emotional, upset or whatever. Do you consider an accountant overreacting if he asks about an unusual line on a financial statement? A kicker who has been robotically consistent had two bad kicks in a row. Are we to turn a blind eye? I think it's a very good point that on two kicks today, at the end of the game, Sturgis had some trouble. Why are we assuming it was mental, as a reaction to the pressure? Is there no other possibility we can reasonably entertain? Is it possible he hurt or tweaked himself? RGF was entirely reasonable in exploring this. What's seemed unreasonable is how many people interpreted it as an attack on Sturgis. Do people actually read the original post in threads or just hit rply the instant the page loads because they just can;t wait for their turn to type? Seriously. Sorry if this seems like me bagging on you 72. You're a good dude and good poster. I'm just saying, in general, I see this surprisingly often; where a poster with a rational thought is treated like a traitor or something. It really kills any point of posting intelligent stuff.
On that final attempt it looked to me like the outside rusher coming from the offensive right side may have gotten a finger on it. The kick just did not behave like a typical hooked kick would. Is everyone sure the ball got away clean?
I thought Gannon and Albert suggested it may have been blocked, but they weren't sure, and got off the air instantly. Without watching it again, its tough to say. It either got blocked a bit, or he just duffed it trying to kill it for the win.
If I remember correctly they first said it looked liked it was touched but after the replay they stated otherwise.
Really ? Because he missed a 57 yard field goal ? Come on, yes he made a mistake on a kickoff, but this guy has been money all year...game was lost by OL.
I thought so too, the whole play looked awkward...almost as if they weren't ready for the snap or something. You may be right.
IMO he was hurt. I think it happened on his last made FG because right after making it he did a mock kick, trying to stretch it or something. I remember thinking it was odd. I also don't think it was blocked. Other than an injury, the only other thing that explains the KO missed FG was if he was notified than someone kidnapped his family and he needed to shank everything if he wanted them to live lol
He is a rookie after all.I think he was still bothered by the poor kickoff kick and he may have been nicked up in the tackle he made .You could say he had a temporary loss of confidence .Plus he was not expecting to kick such a long FG.The sack put a negative pressure on him .If it was not such a high pressure ,high surprise he could have made that kick IMO.
Well, the entire game his kickoffs weren't going as deep as usual were they? Several returns. In most games, the opposition hasn't had a chance to return anything on him because he'd been putting them all to the back line or completely out of the end zone. When 2-3 only go 5 yards deep, that is unusual for him.
It wasn't a bad miss considering the length out, it BARELY missed....the ball knuckled back towards the upright and had the length....
That's what I thought. It had the length by 4 yards or so it just was a little (maybe 3 to 5 feet) off to the left. That being said, the ball wasn't hit in the usual end over end fashion. I am not that concerned though. He has been automatic at 10-11, with his only miss coming on a 57 yarder with the game on the line isn't bad at all. I bet somewhere Tony Sparano is beating off to the thought of having someone like Sturgis.
Which is why its smart to have a KO specialist. Its well worth the investment. Not having one cost us a game yesterday.
No, our defense unable to stop them, our offensive line un able to block, our weapons unable to catch the ball cost us the game. I'd be willing to bet anything, that's the only KO all year he hits out of bounds. And you want to waste a roster spot on someone to do what Stergis can do, just as good, if not better. Ridiculous. There is no way his is real life.
Hopefully his preseason leg injury isn't bothering him again. His kickoffs were shorter than normal. He was involved in two tackles. On the kickoff out of bounds it looked like he was trying to over kick it... same thing on the field goal... I was hoping Harbaugh called timeout right after it left his foot The last four plays for the Dolphins in that sequence were a nightmare of epic proportions. Downing it on first down, with over a minute left? Why?? Tannehill takes a sack... why? Clay drops the pass... why? Sturgis FG not even close... ugh...
I like how you simply ask if Sturgis may be injured due to two bad kicks at the end of the game; and next thing you know, you're being attacked by multiple people for blaming the loss on Sturgis. Thephins.
It was a surprise and a shame that John Harbaugh didn't try to freeze the rookie with a timeout. Sturgis makes the next 57 yarder. He knuckle balled that one, and he still had the distance.
Exactly. Sometimes I could swear that some people just read the thread title and make their assumptions without actually reading the post. Never did I even remotely imply that Sturgis was to blame.
He had the distance just wide left. I still don't get why we kicked the fg. What's the probability a kicker makes a 57 yarder? 10-15%? Go for it on 4th or if the plan was to go for the kick then third down has to be a draw or a dump off to atleast get 3-4 yards to get a semi make able attempt. If there was 10 seconds left and no other choice fine kick the fg but we had a whole 30 seconds plenty of time to go on 4th then get a spike in.
I wish the kid would stop that "celebration leg kick" after making a FG. All I can think about is that moron Gramatica jumping around after a kick and blowing his knee out.
It looked funny. When off the foot it look like it had no chance then it veers right a little. I think it happens when people try to muscle a kick for the long ones, their form gets off.
