It has floated just fine as a way to evaluate coaches and GMs for 50 plus years.... In a half dozen pro sports.

I think Ireland should be fired just based on trading up for Daniel Thomas.

It means he was scared of losing him! :D

I totally agree with you on this. I'll be happy to have this discussion at the end of the 2014 season. I think that's how long we need to see if this core plus or minus some players can be a playoff team.

Russel Wilson was passed on by a lot of teams. NO ONE knew he wd produce like he has. Yeah they got Harvin but he cost a fortune. Lots of factors to consider.

Forgive my misplaced sass, and allow me to replace it with more applicable sass.

The Seahawks reasonably represents the best talent acquisition of the past couple years, which is valuable, but that doesn't give us grounds for suggesting Jeff Ireland is or isn't good enough to be retained. He shouldn't have to match, or be near the best, because that isn't really realistic- If you look at the links I posted, you can't apply that standard to people whom have been claimed to be doing it at a high level for an extended period of time.

You can't differentiate Ireland from "good" GMs by success rate, or the number of high quality players acquired. You're basically stuck conflating a bunch of factors that have as much to do with your quarterback and coaching as they do anything else.

And who is picking the coaching and QB?

I'm sorry, I thought we wanted our team to be at the top or near the top. This is why we tread water after all of these years. It's not realistic for our GM to acquire talent at a level at, or even near, the best in the NFL.

I know about Newsome, Thompson and Bellichick. Your links only show draft picks.

Are GMs only supposed to be graded on draft picks? There is also FA and trades. With these 3, other GMs are able to field consistent, playoff contenders. Hitting on a franchise QB buys you time sure. Ravens, Packers and Patriots have been a staple of the playoff picture every single year. Has Jeff Ireland done so? This year remains to be seen but we seem to field a team that is almost there but falls just short. You can argue, you shouldn't judge a GM by its team's W/L record. This is true if you are looking at individual years. But its nonsense to argue that when looking at a team over time. If a team goes 7-9 for 5-6 years it's not a good product, period. A good gm can also mask bad coaching (Barry Switzer anyone).

You're taking every factor ultimately controlled by a GM and arguing these are the reasons you can't grade the GM. It's quite the novel theory.

You should be tested. Who do you think selects qb and coaches? What you are saying is GMs are beyond judgement which is laughable and clearly shows you are nothing more than an Ireland I will use the S word "supporter" supporter supporter supporter
