I think a lot of people are disregarding how many flaws having a hall of fame QB can cover up. Wonder what Cleveland fans thought of Bill B as a head coach?

Ever since Jimmy Johnson came in and said he had a three year plan to get to the Superbowl, dolphins boards have expected greatness within 3 years with every coach. Is Philbin the guy? Maybe... maybe not, but lets ride THIS wave long enough to find out. Damn fickle fans.....

Besides Marino and a couple of good receivers I thought the team around Dan for his whole duration was subpar.

Are they being used properly now? Because unless Vontae Davis' game vs. the Broncos heralds a breakout for them, they're not.

I don't think it is. It's pretty well a wash.

    These are two separate issues.

Actually, let's go back to these, because this is a point I shouldn't really concede.

They're not "using" Reggie Bush better, they're throwing him the ball. He's not a better rusher. He's a worse rusher than he was circa 2011 in Miami, and despite playing in a more man-oriented scheme, the rushing ability hasn't really come back.

They are throwing him the ball more than Miami did, that's about it. He'll be quite productive in that regard, but I'm not sure what the outcome in that regard will be. He'll give you some big plays, but at a certain point teams seem to move away from it and realize he's a better space guy than he is a receiver and that limits what you can do.

Reggie is on pace for over 1100 yds rushing and over 800 yds receiving, that's pretty good. Jerry Jones seems to be a fan:

This article just makes me wonder what the state of the franchise will be if Harbaugh was the coach like Ross originally wanted.

Exactly. It was Wannstedt post-2003 all over again. He needed to go, fans wanted him gone, etc. Ownership resists, creating a lame duck situation and you essentially waste a season. Ross managed to take it to another level and stain the franchise.

I tell you what, Dan Marino may or may not be 'executive' material, but I would trust him implicitly when it came to picking a head coach. He's as qualified as anyone in that regard. Hell make him a highly paid consultant. Whatever it takes, just get that decision right.

You can disagree, but that's part of people's arguments for using him better.

It's not like Reggie would have taken away targets from an alpha WR last year (and possibly less targets for Brandon would have been a good thing).

I wonder if part of the problem with Marino's previous go-around was a distaste for being stuck in an office job all week. If he was to act as a consultant for coaches and maybe chipped in as per player evaluation, I'd say welcome aboard.

    Simply Amen!!!

We must stop being a training ground for HC wannabe's. Though I do have some hope for Philbin and Coyle, and while not happy with his play calling, Sherman has been a HC so he certainly should know how to train up a player, yet to date where the OL is concerned, and ultimately Sherman has to be the one held accountable for that, he's a miserable F- fail so far IMVHO. And I truly believe we have a couple of talented RB's, but Sherman is failing there so far.

Take Tannehill on his own merit, consider his lack of experience at the QB position, and I give Sherman maybe a D+ at best in that you have to compare where Tannehill is in his Sophomore season vs. his draft class, and Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton & RGIII are all considerably ahead of Tanny again IMVHO. Don't get me wrong, I believe long term Tannehill is going to be our franchise at QB for many years, but the speed of his development as compared to the other quarterbacks in his draft class, well Sherman and his QB coach have certainly fallen short of the mark IMO.

I'm not a big Ireland fan however he has learned on the job and seems to be improving his game in the last few drafts & free agency. I just don't know if we should give him a pass on this last draft & free agency where the OL is concerned because I don't know how much of that was Philbin and Sherman in Ireland's ear. Though I don't know how you can give Ireland a pass on Clabo.

And while we're on this topic the question has to be asked toward the experience level, and how good or how bad are our scouts? Which it seems to me scouts would be Ireland's responsibility, pass or fail. It makes me wonder if when we brought Philbin in, did we stick him with the same old scouts that know what kind of players Bill Parcells likes, or did Ireland get new scouts that know the type of players that fit Sherman and Coyle's schemes?

Depends if you're looking at the Ireland wave or the Philbin wave. If Ireland is knocked off of his metaphorical surfboard, Philbin might wipe out as well. New GM might bring in a new coach, regardless of Ireland's extention, if this year goes down the tube. Or perhaps I should say shoots the tube.

If Marino were to come in Ireland would have to go first. But I agree, player evaluations is one thing, but assisting in picking a head coach is something many former players are more qualified to do than essentially a rich man who wanted to own an NFL franchise.

So depressing to be discussing Head coach and GM candidates in week 7. "Spits"

Throwing the ball to Bush out of the backfield is what you are suppose to do. That is where Bush had his greatest productivity with the Saints. It is also why he is having a better year with the Lions than he did with the Dolphins. Last year the Dolphins had a very weak receiving corp, yet they barely used Bush in the passing game. That was a major coaching error and that was all I was pointing out.

As far as his ability as a running back in the NFL. Bush may not be great as a primary running back, if he isn't part of your passing attack, but he is still a better running back than Miller or Thomas right now.

That is a great point and is very valid. How about this though. You bring elite talents be it reciever corner rb qb, they all fail if you do not win in the trenches. Everyone talks about this coach that coach, this qb that qb. This corner that corner. Really? How about this, the coach who builds the best line on both sides of the ball will be remembered for greatness. The skill positions are only as good as the front line allows them to be. Parcells had it right but could not finish the job. He wanted to build from the line. You spend your draft picks early on young powerful lineman that will be there for a while and you can make 3rd round recievers and corners look like top ten picks. Look at the greatest teams, with the multiple superbowl runs and look at the offense and defensive fronts. Look at the power. There QB had time to throw and was not on his back. The corners had to cover for 3-4 seconds only before the play was over. TRENCHES its all about the TRENCHES. Is it a surprise that the dolphins are beating the patriots right now? Tannehill has not been touched. The defense is getting to Brady......

Great post and its all true Miami sucks as a whole in the front office and I don't see it changing until we have a big shakedown.
