Matt Willis, Mohamed Massaquoi and Mike Thomas are among the free agents at Dolphins camp for a Tuesday tryout, according to a league source. Massaquoi is probably the most familiar name of the group. The former second-round pick started 43 games in the last four years, averaging 14.8 yards per catch. Willis, 29, has 30 career catches in five NFL seasons, most recently with the Broncos. Thomas, however, might be the best slot receiver available. The 5-8 former Jaguar averaged 53 catches his first three seasons in football. Can Massaquoi play in the slot? I'd figure they'd look at somebody like Julius Pruitt again, he's good on ST and knows the system.
Man, if we could Kenny Britt for anything less than a 5th we need to pounce, like a tiger on a gazelle!
All the WRs we could have had in this draft and instead we took Thomas and Jenkins, now we're sifting through this crap.
I am pretty sure they intend to. They do need somebody to back him up and if active play ST though, that can play the slot as well is prolly a huge plus.
What's the story on Massaquoi? He started 43 games for Cleveland, catching 118 passes for 1,745 yards and seven touchdowns. Goes to the Jags and what happened?
He is on his 3rd team now and still not on a roster. Chiefs, Cards, Steelers. Don't see it happening.
Wasn't he nearly decapitated by James Harrison? I think I'd probably start hearing footsteps, too. Or was he soft before that as well?
IMO whomever they eventually sign should be a backup to Mathews who deserves and needs more touches IMO.I think he has the talent to take over the slot position permanently.
Given our needs in the slot and the crap we're sifting through? Maybe no if we drafted a Marquise Goodwin or any other of the good available WRs in the 2013 draft, but we didn't. Regardless, I think that Wylie can play, I'm surprised that the Patriots didn't already pick him up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zzW6dt40mo
It was always a risk going with only 4 WR's on the full roster. I know it's hindsight, but Tyms or McNutt on the roster when it was cut to 53 instead of an 11th DB would look a lot better right now... I'd rather take a chance on another team's practice squad WR instead of one of those retreads trying out.
Watched him a lot as a Georgia alum. His hands are not the most consistent. Route running not a strong suit either. Do you have a list of practice squad kids you would put in an order to look at?
Not exactly a maintained list, no. However, some guys I would take a look at include Devon Wylie and Chad Bumphis.
Yep. I was about to say Chad Bumphis can be signed off the Broncos PS, and he was our best receiver in training camp.
I like Bumphis and he is quick, but he certainly didn't look fast to me. Same problem as Bess- quicks yes, speed no. Wylie is freaking fast- Welker sized, that's not ideal, but we could put him and Matthews in the slot- 2 outside (Wallace/Hartline), 2 inside (Matthews/Wylie) and NMatthews can play some out wide, too. What if there's another injury? Wylie would bring in speed, and i like that- plus he can return kicks.
Has Wylie proven to be able to run routes? Bumphis was able to run routes and find areas in the zone. I am still surprised he is not on an active roster.
From what I've seen he ran routes fine, not buying into the route tree argument. Bumphis and Wylie were both waived, but nothing indicates to me that Wylie can't run proper routes.
It is more than route tree, which is important. Probably the second most important part of being in the NFL, the other is finding open spaces in the zone and making the right reads based on the coverage.
Agreed. Route running seems to be an issue with Wallace. Bumphis ran good routes, plays faster than he appears, and makes plays. Would welcome him greatly.
