Half Way Thru....who's your pleasant surprise and your most disappointing players...

For me, my most disappointing is Lamar Miller, followed closely by Sherman's play calling, with special mention to Clabo....

As to my surprise, I have to say Clay. He's really stepped up his play and while he's not Keller, he's getting there. Second on the list (although tempered some by injury) is Patterson. That Cleveland game was a thing of beauty by him... Special mention goes to Grimes, but imho, he hasn't been a surprise, just playing like I thought he would...

Most disappointing to me is Tannehill.

Surprise is a tie between Clay and Gibson though unfortunately we lost Gibson for the season.

Surprises: Lamar Miller, our cornerbacks Grimes and Patterson

    Disappointments: Entire o-line, Sturgis, Wallace

Clay doesn't not surprise me at all, I expected him to play this way.

Clabo has been most disappointing. I wouldn't have thought he could play as poorly as we've witnessed.
Clay has been my suprise. He's Mr Utility.

Wallace disappointing isn't really a surprise to me, he disappointed plenty in Pittsburgh.

So what? McKinnie came here off of a slump and has so far played great after...less than a week to adjust? Wallace had all off-season and pre-season to get his act together....

Clabo is the most disappointing. He was a top rated OT last year and has cost this team wins. Wheeler has been a let down too.

Patterson has been a surprise, just wish he wasn't made of glass.

Dissapointing: Reshad Jones - he seems to have gone backwards. Others I might mention would be Olivier Vernon, the rookie class (Jordan has promise but needs to see the field more, the rest have been junk), the LB corps, DB depth, Martin & Clabo, Wallace and (unsurprisingly) Daniel Thomas. Tannehill to a lesser extent, I was just hoping for more of a jump and less TOs.

Surprising: Odrick - playing quite well at DT, we have a nasty 3 man rotation. The Grimes/Patterson duo - Grimes has rounded well into form, and Patterson is having a nice year. Hartline is who we thought he would be. Gibson, Clay, Egnew's blocking.

Either the staff doesn't have confidence in him every down, or he's just not picking things up like he should. He's had two good games, and perhaps some of my disappointment in him is due to the play calling, but I'm not enamored as I thought I'd be with him in the preseason...

As to Wallace, his production is not a disappointment to me because it's difficult to determine his affect on the other guys. Of course, with Tanny not getting much more than 2 to 2 1/2 secs to throw the ball, how can he get deep...he's fast, but not that fast... Still, his affect on the other guys in this O is felt, even if his stats aren't...

Disappointment: Clabo, the guy was a top rated OT last season and has been brutal this year. J Martin is a guy I thought would take the next step but really just got man handled while he was out there. Sherman… the guy is just an idiot

Surprise: Egnew, The guy went from not making the team to actually getting on the field and helping the offense (some). Clay, I thought he had the talent but just was never consistent… well so far this year he has been consistent.

    ********
Tannehill, hard to judge him considering the OL.
Miller, The guy is a 1500 yard back if Sherman called his number once in a freaking while AND he got a lil help from the OL
Grimes, anyone who is surprised by Grimes just doesnt watch football. The guy was a great player in ATL, no reason not to believe he wasnt going to be that in Miami

    Surprising: The Miami Dolphins

    Disappointing: The Miami Dolphins

They've shown that they have potential! The first half of the Patriots game was the first time the offense and defense we're both clicking. Play calling was spot on and they looked unbeatable. Then they did the complete opposite the second half.

    Surprises:

    1) Charles Clay. I think he's really stepped up. They've used him as a TE, H-Back, Fullback, Running back, and as a split out receiver. The guy is a veritable Swiss Army Knife on the field, and I imagine as either or both Dion Sims and Michael Egnew continue to improve, Clay will have even more opportunities.

    2) Dion Jordan. The man is an athletic freak, and he's made a pretty outstanding impact for the limited number of snaps he's received. Hopefully he continues his ascension in the second half of the season; he's earned more snaps IMO and has been more impactful than both Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby.

    3) Chris Clemons. He's been the most consistent DB throughout the season.

    4) Ryan Tannehill. He's survived the season thus far. I know most probably peg him in the disappointment category, but some of the throws he's made have been elite-level throws. There's still things he needs to improve upon to be sure, but he's been pretty good for the issues this offense has had to endure.

    5) Dimitri Patterson & Brent Grimes. Patterson, when he's been on the field, has been damn near transcendent compared to his career track record. Brent Grimes, for a man coming off a torn Achilles has been very good.

    Disappointments:

    1) The coaching staff, by far and away. From bad play-calling, to just plain getting out coached, not utilizing weapons, to not making personnel adjustments. This team is more talented than its record and that's got more to do with coaching than the players at this point. Yes, there are some poor fits for what Miami tries to do schematically, but they've not maximized on the talent they have.

    2) Reshad Jones. He's been mostly down this year. I can't quite put my finger on any one particular issues, but he's no where near as consistent as he was in 2012.

    3) Mike Wallace. I think that's pretty self-evident.

    4) The O-line. I've got it ranked this low because I anticipated them being bad; not as bad as they've been though.

    5) Dannell Ellerbe. I think some, if not most of the problem is due to injury and a poor scheme-fit; he's better as a 3-4 "Moe" backer IMO, but he's not played as well as he should be and has missed plays when he's been in position to make them. Philip Wheeler and Olivier Vernon are running close for this spot at the moment. Wheeler's been consistent for the most part, but when he's bad, he's BAD. Vernon is starting to come around, but his run defense has not been as good as I'd hoped it would be for what he is.

I have to say my biggest disappointment is Joe Philbin this season. I was so high on the guy when we hired him and now in his second season it seems coaching is one of our biggest problems. So many of our guys are having career-worst years and I'm starting to wonder if this staff is any better than previous groups.

The biggest surprise to me is Clay.

Well, I think there is some disappointment in the staff as a whole, especially the play calling, but nothing like what we endured with Sparano and his crews... I think we see Philbin move/replace some of his staff this offseason...

Surprises - Clay, Patterson(when healthy), Odrick

Dissapointments - Reshad Jones, Clabo, Sherman's play calling

Guys, here are Tannehill's 2012 stats....
    282-484, 14 total tds, 13 ints, 3,294 yards, Comp. % - 58.3% Rating - 76.1

    2013 projections after 8 games.....
    175-289, 24 total tds, 18 ints, 3,954 yards, Comp. % - 60.6% Rating - 80.8

Better numbers across the board despite playing behind arguably the worst offensive line in professional football. OF course, we'd all like to see the turnovers come down, and hopefully that can happen with better oline play.

The point I'm trying to make is that I'm just not sure how he can be seen as a disappointment. He's progressing nicely behind an absolutely horrific line.

One of the problem is Tannehill was drafted in a year where there are three quarterbacks who have ended up playing at a high level.

If he was taken in the same draft as Ponder or Gabbert he would be seen as an up and coming quarterback.

Very true, but he beat 2 of them head to head. Luck and Wilson.

There is nothing at all wrong with Tannehill, when the line is just decent, he is fine.

Surprises would be Grimes, Gibson and Odrick.

Disappointments would be Jones. He was given a big contract and has been one of the worst ranked safeties as rated by PFF. I expected our OL to be bad but not quite this bad.

Disappointment is Clabo. He makes Colombo look good. Although he looked much better vs. Bengals. So there may be hope.

Positive surprises have to be Patterson and Clay: Patterson has really stepped up his game when he's remained healthy and he's made some real plays for us, just need Taylor and Davis to start to take some snaps away from Carroll and Wilson.

Clay has been one of few bright spots on the offence, obviously losing Keller was big but he's done a great job providing a target for Tannehill in addition to the Swiss Army Knife stuff he does. I think he may actually be our best short yardage back.

As people have mentioned Jones and Clabo on the negative side i'll say Brian Hartline; he's obviously had less opportunities with the O-line woes and the targets Wallace has gotten but he hasn't really justified his contract, just doesn't seem to be getting open as much.

Nothing is a strong word. There is absolutely some disturbing stuff with him. But he has also some very good things.

I hate to say it, but the supporting casts for a lot of teams have glaring holes too. Part of being a top QB is overcoming that, minimizing it, redirecting. The coach as well obviously. There is some good positives, but the book is very much still out.

Clay the surprise and the disappointment definitely all of the rookies other than Dion Jordan.

Making a late surge is Philbins lack of control of the team. Before the season began if there was one thing I thought would never be a question it was about how Philbin had control and was molding the team in his image. Now its definitely not clear what is going on and who is in charge.
