Avs 9-1, bought 4 tee shirts and a hat last week.....lol Not a huge hockey fan like some on here, but it's a lot more fun watching than the Dolphins or even the NFL at this point.
Well the isles keep muddling along. Look good one gm bad the next. Bailey and nielson playing nice. Defense another story
10-1 and up by 5 points. Never thought I'd say this, but I rather watch hockey over the NFL now. Haven't spent a penny on the NFL other than the ticket in 3 years and the way the NFL is running that league, I may never spend another penny.
I was at the game vs Philly since one of my buddies has a season ticket plan and the person he usually goes with couldnt make it. Poulin looked like poop. 2 soft goals early on set the tone and the D looked slow without Visnovsky. Not sure if thats because if thats because it was the game 2 of 2 in back to backs or just cause they really are aside from Hamonic and Andrew MacDonald. So what do they do? Why go and trade Matt Moulson a 2014 1st and a 2015 2nd for Thomas Vanek. Dont get me wrong, Vanek is a top 20 player imo and an elite winger and he will produce a ton next to JT. Both Moulson and Vanek are free agents at the end of the year though and this better not end up like Ryan Smyth. If we resign Vanek, which Im assuming we will since Nabokov and Visnovsky wanted no part of NYI and signed multi year deals. FWIW, Vanek's agent said there were no talks yet but that Vanek was excited to be coming to Long Island. Get some of that Barcay's revenue going in to the player payroll....
When I first heard about the trade I thought we overpaid. Their stat lines are similar the last few years. But vanek was doing that without anyone around him. I think he could be a big upgrade and I like moulson. You're right. We have to sign him. Now let me drink my sorrows away. ****ing rangers
Okay. The first period was great. We came out fast with great scoring chances, passes, and goals. We were ahead 2-0. Then, things started to get sloppy in the second. The Ducks managed to score a goal, and then in the 3rd they scored two more. There were 16 turnovers for the Flyers. That is beyond ridiculous. I did not like how the passing became sloppy. It was going really well. The east/west passing (dot to dot) in the offensive zone was impressive, and it's how Lacavalier notched his goal tonight. Apparently, Flyers fans are going to see a lot of that this year under this new system, and I'm fine with that. We could not capitalize on the power play late in the 3rd. This was ridiculous, as well. The Ducks were outplaying us when we were down a man. How does this happen? There's an extra guy! We should be winning those puck battles based off numbers alone. Instead, one Duck player took 20 seconds with a good penalty kill all by his lonesome, which left 1:40, which disappeared because the passes into the neutral zone were abysmal and the Ducks fore check was fantastic, which kept them in our offensive zone. The week off really helped the Flyers, but there's still a lot of kinks to get out. I really hope they figure out how to play 60 minutes worth of hockey soon. That's being a Flyers fan in a nutshell. We will criticize the hell out of our team because we expect hard work - this area is like that. It's a blue collar bring your lunchpail to work, but if you eat lunch too long and don't get back to work we're going to boo the ever loving **** out of you, yet we are also the first to stand up and support when things are going well. It's high expectations and doesn't have anything to do with fair weather fans. We're all die hards. I know a lot of people don't like Flyers hockey because they tend to throw their weight around a lot and fight a lot, but to me that's part of what makes the team exciting, especially when the fight and big check battles are picked appropriately. I'd also like to say that when one of our guys plays dirty I can't stand it. I enjoy the game clean - I like hits and fights, but I only like fights when the momentum needs to be changed (or some 6'2'' guy smashes a 5'8'' guy and backup comes), and I like big checks when the hit is legal and the player can get up and play again. I'm really hoping we have the answer in net with Mason, but sometimes I'm not so sure.
Okay, so we trade a guy we have for a guy we had. SMDH http://flyers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=689354 Another bully's back...
Avs 11-1, great start!! 2-0 against Dallas, win wins on the road at Boston and Pittsburgh. This stuff is fun to watch even though our GK beat his gf up. That could get ugly in more than one way.
Isles with a nice comeback shootout win vs Ottawa tonight. Twice they overcame 2 goal deficits. Still need a goalie as Nabby let in 2 soft ones tonight that coulda been costly. Also if you guys have smartphones (who doesnt nowadays) you may want to download the NHL Game center app. Gives you all the goal highlights on your droid or iphone.
I don't have a smartphone :'( Also I mentioned earlier about being a Flyers fan and liking the game being played clean. I'm all for fights in hockey if the guy wants to fight and is a turning point for the game, but things like this bother me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GjK9yrRdQk
I like fights, but not cheap shots during play. We had a fight in the 3rd just after the puck hit the ice. Swear to god, just as the puck hit the ice, two guys just went after it.
Those can be timed between the two players fighting. As a Flyers fan, I see a lot of fights. I've noticed players will give each other nods before the puck drop to drop the gloves. To me, that's about momentum, and I'm okay with that.
They were probably discussing the fight between themselves. "Hey, you wanna go?" - "Sure". It happens.
Great win Avs. Worried about Varly with his arrest but let's hope for the best! Best start in avs history! Best record in NHL right now. Shows you how much coaching helps. Worst to first
I had a problem with Emery going after Holtby when Holtby really didnt wanna go. Holtby barely threw at all and when he did it was more about self preservation. That said, when youre getting whitewashed 7-0 its not about momentum, its about intimidating that team for next time and telling them basically "look, you caught us on a bad night so now we're going to take the frustration out on you". I like brawls so it doesnt really bother me unless someone doesnt want to go. But more or less that was typical flyers...gooning it up when youre getting your face beat. Go to Google Play store on an android/App Store on Iphone, go to the search icon. Type in NHL Game center. Its a free app. Well worth your time
As a non-Flyers fan this is the reaction I expect. I'm used to comments like this from any fan of any other hockey team not Philadelphia, doubly more so when it's a division team we face a lot more than those other teams. It doesn't bother me so much anymore because I've learned that you have to be a fan of this team to understand why it is we play the way we do. I'll give you a quick history lesson on Flyers hockey. In '69 the Flyers made it to the playoffs, but were destroyed in a 4-0 sweep by the St. Louis and completely physically outplayed by them. Ed Snider, who was the owner even back then, decided then and there that this would not happen to the Flyers again, so he changed what he was looking for in hockey players. They would be big, strong, and fast, and be able to physically keep the other team in check, and by and large since then that is what has happened. It's not so much about "being a goon when people don't want to go", as I said I dislike those things as much as the next non-Flyers fan, but it is about not being overly matched physically, and being able to use that to their advantage. IMO it should be done fairly, but you get some guys that get on the team and just go overboard. Pretty much since the teams' inception there have been what the league calls enforcers. Moose Dupont, "the hammer" shultz (I think last name shultz). I don't know if these guys were fair or not, but they were the physical guys back in the day, and that's where the name "Broad Street Bullies" came from - because I don't think teams back then by and large played a physical game of hockey, and that's back when the Flyers were winning cups and relevant. At any rate, I gotta go Take it easy Boik
I knew there was some history behind it and typically when a team earns a reputation like the Flyers theres a reason for it. Washington last night was not out hitting or physically imposing their will on the Flyers, they just played better hockey and got a few bounces. I dont even think Washington is capable of really being a physically dominant team given their reputation is kinda soft. Like I said, Flyers gonna Fly and act like goons. Hopefully NYI can beat Boston tonight and solidify their hold on 2nd in the division....
Another short Flyers history lesson. The Flyers were named by a fan contest, and the name was picked because Snider believed that the name matched the speed of the game. Reason #345,862,423 and 1/2 of why I hate the NJ Devils: That damn horn while we're in the offensive zone on the PP
Its funny I never really cared about the devils. Theyre probably the only team I didnt hate in the old Atlantic division format growing up because they were always terrible until I was like 15 or 16. Philly, Pitt and the Rags can collectively choke on each others sticks....especially Pitt and the Rags. Nice Isles won 3-1 over Boston....best game they played all year. Vanek got his 1st and an assist, Okposo with 2 assists, and Tavares with a sick tip drill goal (practically caught it on his stick and kind of lacrosse shot it)
great ****ing win and i agree thats the best, most complete game they have played all year. goaltending and defense were great. vanek got off the schnide. tavares is sick just plain sick. this is the team i was hoping to see this year. hope its a sign of things to come
Did Downie (sp), play tonight. Heard he got a concussion the other night? They interviewed Patrick Roy during a break after the second fight, he had this huge grin. Think he loved the intense. The old timers are here because of Adam Foote night.
He didn't play. He's out indefinitely with that concussion. The second I heard about the trade, I didn't like it. I didn't see much of a benefit for the Flyers.
Same here. It doesn't sounds like he's going to be back for a while, though. I think Talbot served much more of a purpose than Downie will. I would love to hear the reasoning behind that trade.
He doesn't have a concussion http://fightinforphilly.com/2013/11/02/downie-not-concussed/ and are you serious? I love Talbot as much as the next guy, but Downie is a solid hard working player.
See, for me growing up was when they had Scott Stevens and Brodeur (he's still there now, hell) and they had that trap zone defense thing. With Jersey being so close to Philly they invade our arena and we invade theirs. I couldn't stand Pittsburgh just because it was law to do so. We can hate the Penguins together
The Avs announcers where saying last night that Talbot is much better on the penalty kill and that's why the Avs made the trade.
And Downie is a free agent next year not likely to be resigned. Also I heard him and Landeskog didn't get a long. Anyway last nights win was nice! Great way to Celebrate Foote. One of my favorites growing up. I actually though the snowman footprint was because of him!
Thanks. Reason why I don't like the trade is because we drafted the guy and had to trade to get him back
