This was a pretty MAJOR breach in Joe Philbin's authority over how the players conduct themselves. Randy Starks (the guy who gave the middle finger to the coaches a few months ago for benching him) explicitly said that nobody asked Philbin for permission to do what they did.

Make no mistake, what they did yesterday was orchestrated, and it was a pretty big deal.

The question to me is what is Joe Philbin going to do about it. Legitimately, he should be handing out fines and suspensions for conduct detrimental to the team. Some of the guys, like Tyson Clabo for example, really called out Jonathan Martin in a way that the team cannot afford to have happen.

There was no control whatsoever. I blame the coaching staff for their policies. This is what happens when you try and go all iron fist on this stuff. When the dam breaks, it floods. And some stuff may have been said during that media session that legitimately makes the Dolphins' legal position with Martin just a little bit tougher.

How Philbin handles this is going to be interesting because he's really stuck between a rock and a hard place. I don't think he can afford to start fining guys for this with his hold on the locker room so tenuous (as evidenced by the orchestrated breaking of his rules). On the other hand, if he does nothing, he looks weak...and you can absolutely expect more inmates running the asylum.

He's got to find some way to walk the middle with the players on that one. Maybe even relent on his media policies altogether and admit that his policies were wrong. That might be the best way for both sides to move forward together.

But trust me...Joe Philbin is the guy that pushed the button on suspending Richie Incognito without even digging for more facts...and Joe Philbin's standing orders just got shattered to pieces in a concerted, orchestrated locker room effort.

That...is not good. Short term I'm sure the players will play out of their minds. But long term you need a strong connection between coaches and players to win football games.

EDIT: An update from Armando Salguero:

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm just posting and ruminating on the implications of something that has been actually reported on. If you disagree with the veracity of Armando's reports, that is your prerogative...and it's fine with me.

A lot of interpreting here. Philbin could of very well given them the on the record, I'm telling you not to talk about it *wink wink* And we also don't know if it just got to the point where Philbin said **** it fire away.

I can't see anyone holding a grudge about it either considering the ridiculous amount of mud-slinging they've put on Incog and everyone else. Can't see them being mad that the players stood up for everyone.

lol Locker room rebellion though? Really? I don't expect to see William Wallace riding through in face-paint just yet. Nice sensationalizing though.

He had to know the media would hound the players until someone spoke. I personally would allow them to share their thoughts. They sounded pissed yesterday. I hope they play pissed on Monday night.

Really, you mean Tannehill went behind Philbin's back and called a press conference or that Hartline, Solia etc... went out and pulled reporters into the locker room.

Did it occur to you that after doing their own internal investigation the team decided that the public needed to hear what the players were saying and thus made them available to the media.

Im happy theyre telling Martin to kick rocks. Martin should have never made this stuff public. Thats how this works. Youre unhappy, you do what everyone else does and ask for a trade. That way youre just another million-dollar draft pick who needs a new beginning. Instead he chose to make this stuff public and his teammates have to deal with it? Thats aint right any more then Richie using the N word towards him. As far as Im concerned Martin is just beginning to get what he deserved. As is El Jefe.

How do we know the players didn't go to Philbin and tell him they wanted to talk about it after sitting around a few days? We Don't. This is still just more vague bs where nobody here, or the media, or anyone else except inside the organization know FOR SURE that the players were told they couldn't speak yesterday.

I don't see this as rebellion at all, that is the media/other people still putting a spin on it for hits.

BS on the idea that the players disobeyed Philbin's orders.

Ryan Tannehill was put on a soap box presser yesterday and allowed to answer questions about Martin/Incognito. This was a supervised interview. Miami's PR people were present and we've seen them cut many interviews short when things get hairy, but not this one. These interviews were allowed to happen on purpose. Hartline even said they were now allowed to voice their opinion.

No in fact I think it shows that they knew they were breaking his rules. They tried to quarantine the damage by making sure to praise Joe Philbin, and by cutting off the conversation the next day and quietly snapping back to full conformity to Philbin's rules.

But last night was a major breach of those rules...and if it happens once, it can happen again.

    Telling him to "punch incognito"?
Forcing Philbin to deal with Martin as a LT after Philbin wanted Mckinnie or another LT in the offseason? His biggest freaking job is if the coach is telling him he needs a better LT is to go get a better LT. His job is personnel and he did a crap job there.
Other then that and being the soul-less ginger he already was...nothing. Dont worry, hes not surviving this crap. It'll all be over soon.

Tell em why you mad, son. Tell em why you mad.

I don't have a horse in the race but we're having a good season and very much in the thick of things right now. Canning a GM over this **** would be stupid, imo. If the season goes south and you think that's the main culprit then be my guest.

Because Randy Starks explicitly said they didn't.

That and Armando's source says that Philbin's orders from Monday still stood on Wednesday.

If you disagree with them, that's fine.

I dunno CK. Isnt this the same team who had a PR guy right next to Wallace saying "next question" or "no more questions about the staff" etc.....and they had to abandon ship?

You really think Philbin and staff let them have free reign on interviews, press conferences etc without knowing SOMETHING? You don't think they would've cut the cord immediatley once they realized what was going on? That went on forever last night!

I think Philbin is a smart dude, and he had that under control last night.

Possible. But Armando's sources directly contradict the theory. As did Randy Starks. And Brian Hartline seemed to insinuate the same.

Hartline says today that they were able to say what they needed to yesterday, and they are ready to move on now. Why isn't the story that Philbin gave them the freedom to respond to questions yesterday and to move on now.... Unless it doesn't fit your narrative.

And Philbin couldnt plant a source, and direct his players to say as such

"You can do this, but I didnt tell you too" type thing....keeps it all off him.

Listen, if you think this is over, its not. Its just begining. The media is sitting on 2 huge things and 1 Im not sure they even realize.
One is centered around Jon Martins acceptance in the locker room as a Ivy educated white collar kid who cant cut it and wants to play the "woe is me" game.
Second is centered around mommy being a bigshot toyota lawyer itching for a moneygrab
Third I cant even discuss but if its real, this crap is gonna blow up in Martins face like you wont believe.

I'm sorry, CK but I don't buy this at all..... This is Mike Florio type stuff.... Now it's a conspiracy by the players to do...What ?? Get Philbin fired, shoot the national media already has him fired and he likely will be fired whether he's right or wrong in this. Get RI brought back sooner?? Oh yea, throw more logs on the fire so that the story goes away and they can get back to normal ?? I'm into conspiracies but this is off the chart to me. Suspending RI HAD to be the first move if for nothing more than the racial remarks he made. Even the other players can see that. This is wrapping a story around a theory that just doesn't fit, to me...

Because all that stuff relates to ireland overlooking the character flaws and possible emotional problems he knew about when he drafted him. It also relates to Ireland pressuring philbin to play Martin and not getting Philbin the LT he asked for.

What youre missing is that there is a power struggle within the organization. Philbin vs Ireland. And Dawn Aponte who Ross views as something of a rising star, is aligned with Philbin. Plus you have a GM who for most of the last 6 years has failed to make this team a playoff contender. Lastly, look at this years draft? Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor, Will Davis, etc all drafted despite injury concerns and have missed significant time. Injury concerns are something Ireland, as a Parcells disciple, is something he was taught to avoid. Now Parcells isnt perfect but he got that right.

Ill put it this way...I dont know but if it is why he lawyered up but for this one he doesnt need a sports lawyer. He needs a hell of a lot more then that. IF its true.

EDIT: Oh and 1 more thing...the reason he hired a sports lawyer may be two fold. 1 should be obvious...money. The other....I know the media is sitting on but waiting for confirmation.

Tannehill is different. He's the quarterback of the team, and therefore, he should be the voice and leader of the team. I imagine that he's the only player they really want talking publicly at this point.
