I know it is putting the cart ahead of the horse but I am wondering who some of you guys are thinking would be a good head coach.

I have no clue… That is why I am asking...

Barney the dinosaur. He'd create a happy love fest in the locker room and we'll never get in trouble again.

I agree with your list, except Rex won't be available. It's wishful thinking IMO to expect the Jets to fire him.
If you coupled him with a good young OC, I'd like to see Lovie get the nod. We know he can coach a defense, and one that gets a lot of takeaways.

My only person I would want is Jon Gruden.

    Heres why.

Jon Gruden has spent all this time studying the NFL, breaking down offenses, defenses. He is studying College offenses. Spends hours with guys like Chip Kelly.

I believe he has been plotting his last shot at a coaching job. He's like a mad scientist..and I think he has just been waiting for the perfect spot for him to go and win a Championship. I like that kind of mentality. He wont be using the same style he used when he was coaching before...

And....he says he wants to coach.

While Gruden’s career as a broadcaster has been successful, he doesn’t deny that he would like to coach again.

“I haven’t lost a game in 3½ years,” he said. “But no, I would like to give coaching one more try.”

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1826201-jon-gruden-speaks-out-about-potential-return-to-coaching

Thats not...a wishy washy....maybe kind of answer. He WANTS to coach again, and has wanted to all along IMO.

For me....I do what I have to do to get Jon Gruden. And I think Miami has the goods he is looking for. I think he looks at Ryan Tannehill as the kind of QB he believes can run his offense...and win it all.

Plus....if Im an owner....I need to get fans exited and wanting to get season tickets next season. Only two coaches IMO...have the ability to charge the fans with excitement, and have them forget 2013. Gruden and Cowher.

Why Whiz? I am not disagreeing, just curious why you brought him up.

Personally he was caught in a similar situation in AZ, with a GM that was subpar when it came to bringing in talent. They were stupid to fire him imo.

He would be my first pick. He has the offensive mind set to create mismatches and calls a great offensive game plan. Of course, I would take his brother too.

His teams outproduce their talent at QB.

He also has NFL HC experience, which I think will be important for the next coach to have.

Primary list (hire if they say "yes") would include Jay Gruden, Bill Cowher and Art Briles.

Secondary list (interviews) would include David Shaw, Guz Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin, Ken Whisenhunt and Jack Del Rio.

That's the best I have for now.

I'm not a fan personally. I don't think he maximizes what Cincinnati has very well. Isn't that a familiar theme? He's also got a DUI arrest on his record from 2005, I believe he was a Raiders Assistant at that point. I just don't see him being the type of guy that will work well in Miami. He's opposite from Philbin, that's for sure. I think you need someone in the middle of those two.

That was while he was still head coach of the Orlando Predators. He blew a .1 and they reduced it to reckless driving.

The coordinators and coaches are also important to consider, as are the marriage of the GM and HC.

    Some random notes:

    1. There's a possibility of Jack Del Rio and Eric DeCosta being a package deal, but also a possibility of David Shaw and Eric DeCosta being a package deal.
    2. There's a possibility of Duke Tobin and Jay Gruden being a package deal.
    3. Jay Gruden might think about keeping Kevin Coyle on as defensive coordinator, for better or worse.
    4. An immediate consideration for OC if the Dolphins were to hire Art Briles would be Dino Babers, the head coach of Eastern Illinois.

I would imagine Jay Gruden would call the plays himself so he would have to set up a kind of sham offensive coordinator...kinda like Philbin was in Green Bay.

I think after these last few shots (Cameron, Sparano, Philben) Ross may be look to bring in a known commidity, with Lovie Smith, Ken Whisenhunt and Jack Del Rio probably heading the list. Not personally what I would want, but I could see the attraction that it would bring to hire a known person. Some respect and stability that some of the younger guys or first timers may not have, though also potentially it seems with lower ceilings.

I would be on board with Shaw from Stanford personally. He has followed Harbaughs success with plenty of his own, and his teams are well coached and tough. It will be hard to lure him away from Cali.

If the Jets fire Rex and he went to Miami, you might see me wearing a Dolphins jersey. I would be *that* pissed off. The guy has plenty of faults, but I still think he is pretty damn good.

I'm not holding a DUI from 8 years ago against him.

Also I'm not even sure why you brought up the possibility that he was an assistant with the Raiders (which he wasn't, by the way, not that it matters).

I personally think he's gotten fantastic results out of that cast. The only great players they have in the lot are A.J. Green and Andrew Whitworth.

Otherwise his offense has helped turn Marvin Jones into a top 15 fantasy wide receiver, Jermaine Gresham actually looks decent even though he should (IMO) be a draft bust, BenJarvus Green-Ellis somehow continues to produce thanks to his offense, Andre Smith was scraped off the bust heap thanks to him. He turned Andrew Hawkins into a good player last year too, and the only reason he's not producing this year is he's been hurt. Oh and he made Cedric Benson into a 1000 yard rusher for crying out loud. In 2011, Jay Gruden got the best season out of Jerome Simpson anyone is likely to ever get.

Oh and Andy Dalton? Everyone knows that guy isn't really any good. The Jay Fiedler of the 2013 era.

And isn't there something to be said for helping a guy like A.J. Green become an amazing football player instead of ending up in offenses where he's continually weighed down by other factors? I love the way he's incorporated Tyler Eifert and Giovani Bernard this year. He was given versatile weapons by Duke Tobin and he's incorporated them very well.

The ONE black mark on his record, the only thing I will hold against him...is that he was instrumental in picking Andy Dalton as the quarterback of the franchise.

But you know what? He's gone out there with Dalton and proved that Dalton actually CAN run his system. They move the football every week. They score points every week. They win games. Is Andy Dalton good enough? No, I don't think so. But Jay Gruden is making the guy good enough that it's a tough call. He didn't pull a Tony Sparano/Dave DeGuglielmo and coach John Jerry in the Senior Bowl, coming out saying this John Jerry guy is a smart player and I think he could even switch to left guard...then get him into camp and complain this John Jerry guy is dumb as rocks and there's no way he can play left guard. He said Andy Dalton can run his system and Andy Dalton has been running his system productively ever since.

And not for nothin but, who else was available to them? Cam Newton was off the board at #4 overall. Jake Locker, Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert have been disasters. He appears to have directionally made the right call on Dalton versus those three as well as Ryan Mallett. The ONE guy is Colin Kaepernick...and ya know what? Dude ain't lookin so hot this year. AND he wasn't a good fit for Jay Gruden's system.

Maybe the whole Dalton thing is a learning experience for Jay Gruden. Maybe after three years he's saying you know what, Andy can do the things I need him to do, I was right about that, but if you want to win it all in this league maybe I need a guy that can do more than that.
