Hello all. Not trying to troll or take any cheapshots. Just wanted to come in and find out about your perspective on the upcoming game. On our board(s) people are at both ends of the spectrum. Some are calling it a "trap game" and others think the Panthers will simply continue to roll. Personally I think it is neither. Cameron Wake is an absolute beast and you have an extremely talented and cerebral QB on the other side of the ball and by all accounts the Dolphins team plays very good football.

I do think that these two franchises are similar in terms of putting together a team capable of competing and vying for the playoffs. Anxious to hear your thoughts on this.

I am hoping for a highly competitive and injury free game this weekend.

Opposing fans are always welcome as long as it stays smack free (which is how we generally do things anyway)....Plus youre not a jets bills or pats fans so the board shouldnt catch verbal diarrhea. :)

    My Thoughts?
    - The Dolphins play a lot of man. Thats a bad idea vs Cam Newton. You need to shadow Cam or preferably play zone.
    - The Dolphins OL has played better but still sucks. No Incognito, Pouncey or Martin. Martin and Incognito werent playing that well anyway but they were still starters. Its a bad matchup on paper vs your DL. Carolina has an elite pair of DE's.
    - Cam Wake is the real "Kraken" not Greg Hardy. :)
    - Dolphins need to make someone else besides Smith and Olsen beat them. Panthers have ok weapons but theyre not exactly Denver.
    - Ted Ginn. The Dolphins know what he can do on returns. Hes still a crappy wr but he worries me on returns. keep away.
    - Miami has to find a way to run the ball. Theyve done a crap job of that most of the year but if they dont Tannehill may get pulled by his wife who doesnt want a vegetable at 25. I think Carolina sacked Eli like 6x in the first quarter. Miami's OL is in that NYG category of "not good". Mike Sherman needs to get the ball in the hands of Wallace, Matthews, Clay, Miller and Hartline and those guys have to make plays with the ball.

I said it last week.. If Coyle has the guts and brains to make it happen, I think it's the right move and I'd sure love to see it..

It all comes down to Cam newton. If he continues his play lately, we'll lose. But if he stumbles, and a short week on the road after a big win certainly smells like a recipe for that to happen, then we'll have a shot.

Stop the run, force Cam to throw it 30 times, hope he makes some bad decisions under pressure. Profit.

one nice quality about Newton this year is he has been very balanced in spreading the ball around...Smith, Olsen, LaFell and Ginn. All 4 have comparable production. He still slants more toward Smith than anyone but he is working away from that.

man coverage is only bad if you don't have someone who can spy and hang with Newton. Washington in AZ did a great job.

I have a bad feeling Newtons ability to scramble to move the chains will be the difference in this game. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Welcome to thephins.com man. Very much appreciate the introduction.

I think one thing that will be very interesting to watch, is what team comes out and sets the physical tone first. One thing I noticed in the Panther's / Pat's game was that the Panther's were extremely physical. They bullied the Patriots.

I think the Phin's defense is a pretty proud bunch of buys...and have been hearing how good the Panther's D is. My guess is it will be a defensive style brawl.

Another Panthers fan checking in here. I've read plenty on both our forum and yours. There are some bad perceptions floating around but a lot of good matchup analysis. I came here to talk about something different though.

    EXPECTATIONS!

Being a NFL fan is much like playing a game of constantly evolving expectations. When Carolina started 0-2 losing to Seattle and an absolute heartbreaker to Buffalo expectations were quite low. Crazy people running around calling for Rivera to be fired, Cam to be traded, and worse. The bounce back 38-0 drubbing of the Giants improved the mood a little, until Carolina had their worst game of the season out in the desert. Expectations sank again and crazy talk cranked back up. Then the streak starts...for those who watched Carolina closely over the last few years and especially in the losses we knew this team just needed to turn the corner. With each win hope began to return and expectations rose. They rose to the point that by the time we rolled into Candlestick fans truly believed Carolina had a chance to win that game. The general thought was if we could split with San Fran and New England we would have genuine hope for the season. Carolina goes on to defeat San Fran in their house coming off a bye. Again, expectations rise, WOW! if we can beat Brady at home on MNF and go 2-0 in games we hoped we could split a few weeks ago....WIN! And the Panthers did just that, went out and did enough to get a W against Brady and the Pats, again with them coming off a bye! So what does that do for our expectations? Obviously the expectation is to handle our business against a team that's perceived to be inferior to our two most recent wins.

I look at where the Dolphins are right now and I see a team in the position we were heading into the San Fran game. You've had some quality wins and a dreadfully embarrassing loss. Those balance out to mild expectations, a knowledgeable fan certainly isn't assuming Miami will beat Carolina just because. At this point the perception should be that you're playing one the league's better teams this weekend. Beating Carolina would be something fans would be proud of and it would count as a good win, the same as we counted the San Fran and NE wins. It would certainly change your expectations going forward.

So there you have it, I expect Carolina to win. They've done everything you could ask a team to do to establish some expectation. If Miami is able to beat us this weekend then your expectation will begin to rebound as well. Looking forward to a great game!

I agree completely man. I actually think this is going to be a very entertaining game to watch. There are alot of matchups that will be interesting. Grimes vs SSmith for example. The use of our 3rd round pick Dion Jordan. Who wins the title..."Official Kracken!"...

    Cant wait....lets get it ONNNNN!

    I hope you're wrong, too.

As an AU alum, I love Cam and think he's a great football player. There were a lot of Merrill Hoges thinking he wouldn't make it in the League, but I think he's done a great job proving the naysayers wrong. He was never bad from the pocket, and he's getting better and better after a good rookie season and a relatively brief sophomore slump. But yeah, his size and legs are the killers. Not just in scrambling and moving the chains that way, but also being a team's option as their short yardage back. Third and ones, third and twos -- Cam will just take it and his length, explosion, and power generally are enough to move chains in most short yardage situations. He's also athletic enough to pop it to the outside if it gets stacked up inside, so for him, there's more than one way to skin the cat on those third down conversions. As he showed against the Pats (and has against many teams), he can also convert third and longs with his legs.

Therefore, I think the Dolphins defense has to be very disciplined in their pass rush and lanes, and I think it'd probably be wise to have a spy -- not every play but on crucial ones -- on him. Try to have him beat you from the pocket. While I'm sure almost every team goes with that as a game plan, it's easier said than done, obviously -- if we want to win, we just need to be more successful than some other teams have been at it this year. Like any QB, if the rush gets to him and he can't escape, he'll make a mistake here and there. Hopefully, we can force one or two of those and capitalize. And it'd be nice, also, if our offense can manufacture some long drives, as our defense will benefit from long resting periods of not having to chase after Cam.

This game is a tough one, both offensively and defensively, and I'm glad we're at home. Of course, I think Tampa was at home (the Tampa that beat us), and Cam looked like a surgeon on their defense. Still, it's a Sunday game, they're on the road, and the Panthers have just played (and won) two huge games. Seems like a natural letdown is due. We have a chance, but the Dolphins are going to have to play one of their better and cleaner games to win this one.

i think it comes down to defend cam newton on 3rd down, if we can keep him from getting those with his feet, we have a chance to win this game, also let the panthers wear their black unis and let them deal with the humidity all game long

Have you ever been to Carolina in August when these guys are in training camp? There is no amount of heat/humidity mother nature can throw at this team that they haven't already trained in. Don't see this affecting the game in any measurable way.

Cam has been tough on 3rd down (but not just with his legs)....as a passer, I think statistically he is the 3rd best in the NFL on 3rd down.

in fairness, Panther coaches HAVE mentioned the humidity issues in Florida before. We have gone down early for Tampa Bay games before to adjust. I think earlier in the season it likely has more of an impact.

All that said, we are coming off a short week...and have played two very tough games. Weather good slow down a group of guys that might be a tad worn out to begin with.

Yes I have, and I'm not claiming it's comfortable! It's also not August in Miami, it's November in Miami. August around here is 90+F with 85-90% humidity being common and that's a far sight worse than the conditions this Sunday. Our guys aren't from Green Bay, they know how to handle heat index.

So considering Charlottes been in the 30s/had snow last week/ and has been windy and cold that wont play a factor when its 80 and humid sunday in dark uniforms!?

BTW I am in Ballantyne right now, its been chilly/cold for weeks straight. That will have an effect...regardless they played in the heat 3 months ago.

Stand in a walk in cooler for 5 minutes then step out into a 70 degree room. It will feel hot. That's just after 5 minutes of being in a colder environment.

I don't think it will be a huge factor. These guys are professional athletes with professional trainers. I agree that weather conditioning in August doesn't equal weather conditioning in November, but that was never my argument. My argument is that these players, coaches, trainers know and have experience on to handle heat and humidity. For that reason I don't think it's as big a deal as it would for a team that rarely deals with it.

Steve Smith is walking his dog right now in a hoodie in Waxhaw, Guys are out practicing in 30-40 degree weather all week....then they get on the field Sunday and its 80, humid, no wind, dark uniforms....its going to make a difference. Watch for hands on hips late into the second quarter on a couple of long drives by Miamis offense, then think of me....and when you see a silver versa with a dolphins logo on the front give me a thumbs up for being right, then buy me a beer at Taco Mac.....Deal?

Spy wont work with Cam, Greg Olsen will pick up chunk yardage all day.

I would try to zone blitz and throw a mix of coverages on him

high on Monday in Charlotte was 77. Will be around 70 on Friday....not exactly winter weather up here yet.

Not as big of a factor as a NE team coming down there in September for example.

Fair enough, just slow down with the absolute translations. If Carolina is sweating bullets and performance is obviously affected by the heat/humidity I will buy you a beer. When the team plays consistent throughout 60 minutes what do I win?

    1. We beat Indy
    2. We beat Cincy

The only way the Panthers win is with the running game. If we can stop the run, Grimes and Patterson are gonna be huge! Grimes is used to Carolina. Wake is hopefully a week healthier. DJ should cover Olsen at times. I am putting this game squarely on the shoulders of 2 LB's; Wheeler and Ellerbee! If they can play disciplined, and tough, we win. If they play sloppy as they have in half of the games, the Panthers run wild and we lose. You have a good D, but I think we match up well.

Let's not forget the Panthers have NEVER beat Miami! :)

any reason why we can't win without the run? a few teams have schemed up so far to completely eliminate our RBs and the traditional run so far during our recent win streak.

in our 6 game win streak...our RBs have collectively ran for 100 yards once.

I'll preface this with: I sure hope I'm wrong.

I think Cam is just too much to deal with for this defense and the way they are playing against the run right now. I foresee a lot of 3rd and longs where Newton is just going to run for miles. I also see Ted Ginn having a long TD reception in this one. He's been playing pretty well in Carolina and against his old team it just seems bound to happen.

Tannehill would have to play one of the best games of his young career to keep up and with this makeshift line, I'm just not sure he can do it. I think Carolina wins by at least 2 scores.

Lots of times when I think this way Miami wins, so there's that.

Props to the Panthers fans coming in here with respect and wanting to discuss the upcoming game. Thanks for visiting the Thephins.com. Hope you enjoy your time here. :knucks:

I also don't see the heat/humidity playing a huge factor this weekend. Besides, it wouldn't surprise me to see Carolina wearing their home blue unis this Sunday.

No sir, the game will come down to the two Cams IMHO. Hopefully ours has a big game and gets theirs a few times. Our secondary also going to have to have a solid game. Ultimately though, I think it's our offense that could be the difference maker. Basically, we will need to score more. Scoring 20-22 points ain't gonna get it done. We need at least 27-30 to have a chance.

I honestly don't know if you've played DBs with as good as a pash rush as our units. Grimes and Patterson make plays and we rush hard. I worry about can making big plays with his feet giving time for coverage to break down. It will be a good game for sure.

well Wake is a LDE correct?

The right side of our OL is probably the biggest concern on our roster. Our RT is unpredictable....and we have a converted DT next to him at RG.

well, I don't visit all opposing team boards....I do for games like this b/c frankly I don't know as much about Miami as teams we play more regularly.

statiscally, the Phins pass D is middle of the road (19th). That is all I really know/got.

You do have a nice amount of INTs
