A no brainer here. That's why we're even considering LeCharles Bentley and already got Steve McKinney.

Two rookies on the same side with a 2nd year man in the middle. Doesn't bode well. I hope someone falls to us in the July 1st cuts or sooner.

We need some help on that left side. Im guessing if the roster stays as it is heading into TC Im assuming that means smiley moves to LG, with Carey and probably one of the young guys on the right side. I dont like the idea of starting two rookies on the QB's blindside. Thats a recipe for disaster i think.

I found this on KFFL (from last week):

Way to go out on a limb there huh?

I think McKinney starts at LG, at least to start the season. If one of the kids shows some potential, he might get some snaps to see how things progress. If he can handle it in limited duty, we might see a change around mid season or so.

This is exactly why I begged for a 2nd OL to be drafted much higher than we took Murphy. We blew it in this area IMO. That being said, we'll have to put Smiley next to Jake and see who steps up for the RG spot. Hopefully a miracle happens.

Blew it in the draft? If so, I disagree. Long, Murphy and Thomas were good picks imo.

"raw and inexperienced" does not concern me, it's a rookie left side of the line that does.

That did happen for us in 1990. Rookies at LT and LG and a 2nd year center, starting a combined 45 games and it was one of the best seasons the team has put together since the last Super Bowl appearance.

I'm kinda bummed that McKinney isn't ready until going into preseason. OL could lack cohesion. It could be a reason why the FO could sign a veteran guard by training camp.

We blew a few opportunities but not necessarily Murphy and Long.

It was Richmond Webb and Keith Sims, both were a 1st and 2nd round pick respectively. Murphy and Thomas are 4th and 6th rounders and a lot of people didn't even have them on their draft radar. The odds those two will succeed in their first few years are very steep. Murphy seems more ready but he'll likewise need some time to develop and throwing him to the wolves like that isn't a good idea.

McKinney's a true veteran. I don't think it'll take him much time to acclimate himself. This is a guy who shifted positions seamlessly throughout a season. The only concern for him is his health.

I am scared too. All the feel good from the mini-camps is starting to fade into reality. Just how bad could our offense be ? I'm showing my lack of real football knowledge guys, I am just a regular fan, but I am getting nervous that if we are planning to run the ball a lot, can this work better than a passing game ? Is it simpler to run running plays than passing plays ? Are the OL skills more necessary for one or the other ?

Please forgive if this sounds like dumb questions but I'm just a regular guy fan. Never played in school.

Well, it would be a 1st and 4th, or a 1st and 6th, if we have two rookies starting on this season's OL. Our current 2nd year center was a 2nd rounder and our 2nd year center in 1990 was a 5th rounder, if the actual rounds drafted are of primary concern.

I'm hoping that if Bentley isnt the answer, they trade for someone. The only real low-hanging fruit that I feel matches a pretty good scheme/youth/upside/price list is Daryn Colledge, who played well as a rookie but got benched towards the end of last year.

I think cohesion is pretty overrated secondary to overall talent. We've seen teams replace all 5 starters(San Diego couple years back) in a single offseason and do quite well.

I am also pretty afraid of the idea that Steve McKinney sucks pretty bad. He's still at the end of the day a guy who managed to give up 9 sacks as a Center. There are people on death row for lesser crimes than that.

Well, like a draft trade chart, you'd rather have a 1st and a 2nd round pick than a 1st and a 4th. But it's still not optimal to be starting multiple rookies on a line anyways.

Im not that concerned tbh, young olinemen seem to develop well and quickly. As long as someone steps up we should be ok.

Should've stayed with pick #64 (instead of trading back two spots) and gotten John Greco IMO.

I agree they were OK picks, especially Long. However IMHO we should have taken another OL much higher that was way more NFL-Ready than Murphy or Thomas are. Unless you accept the premise that this is a rebuilding year and we can afford to put in a very inexperienced guy at RG. Problem with that is we're going to possibly have a QB in Beck who needs some confidence in the OL in order to develop.

I had hopes for Mormino at G. Does anyone know if his shoulder was trashed? Maybe he just wasn't stout enough at the point of attack and that led to his release.

Smiley seems like a great pickup, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Murphy and Thomas can do.

In terms of of a 2nd or 3rd round OL, I heard rumblings that Greco was targeted and we missed out on him after the Lions trade, I wonder if that was so.

Like many of said, I think McKinney is our fallback. I don't think they actually want him to start I think they would rather one of the younger offensive lineman picked up that slack. The discerning partis that Mazer apparently is concerned about his young offensive lineman.

The thing of it is, no matter which way you look at it this offensive line will still be better than the O line of the last few years. While having Murphy and Long on the same side might scare the coaches, talent wise and athletically they're still better than guys (insert name here) we've had lately.

From this standpoint, I can't see how we can be worried too much. If McKinney is not going to be ready or ready on time then I suppose they'll move Smileyto the left side and fill in one of the younger guys on the right side. As I said before IMHOwill still be better off than the last four or five years.

Exactly... usually at this point in the season we're looking for two or three starters to fill in the gaps on our line... having 80% of our line in place and set is refreshing.
