Boy, when it comes to MG3....the words "too good to fail" come to mind. He's Cordarrelle Patterson playing a position that requires less technical skill and awareness.

.... then I look at Wilder Jr and wonder if he couldn't give us what we hoped Daniel Thomas could.

What really gets me about MG3 is, it's not just the physical ability.

The physical ability is there and it's significant. It's about as good as you get, short of like a Bo Jackson or someone like that, as far as acceleration, top speed, cutting, etc.

But it's the other stuff that make him special. His daylight instincts are superb. And look at the way he uses his blockers. That's a theme you see all over his running, just look at the patience and instincts for staying in blockers' wake and then making a cut and exploding by them. He almost NEVER wastes a block.

As for the physical truck stick ability...I think he's fine there, but obviously he's not confusing anyone into thinking he's Christian Okoye reborn. What matters to me is his habit of shaking off that first guy. I mean he'll truck a smaller corner straight into the ground and blow by him...but I'm looking at work against other guys. He gets off them and if there isn't secondary help then he's getting more yards. That's enough for me. His balance and ability to absorb and get by arm tackles matters more to me.

I'll put it this way. Most of these RBs out there I know are a dice roll. I love Lache Seastrunk. But he's a dice roll. Even Giovani Bernard, he was my favorite back in that draft by a good amount, he was kind of a dice roll. Mark Ingram sure as hell was a dice roll and that didn't come up so good. Eddie Lacy was a dice roll.

I don't really think Melvin Gordon is a dice roll. I'm just pretty sure he plays in this league and gains yards.

I watched him a few times live this year and walked away with some concerns and not overly impressed, but this is definitely better, enough to flag my interest.
I wanna see more of him but from the highlights he uncannily looks like Jamaal Charles 2.0. Same frame, upright running style, movement ability, the way he sets up blocks, you name it. What's with all of these backs wearing #25 BTW?

My *** Clement is 5'11. Nice little freshman. Get a kick out of his bunny hops.

I thought this said "Melvin Ingram sure as hell was a dice roll", and I had a good laugh at the thought of ol' T-Rex arms as a running back.

I definitely caught a glimpse of all that. Like I just said I feel like I'm watching Jamaal Charles, so that's a pretty fair compliment. I'll move him up my board to a 3 way tie for first for the time being.

I actually thought Lacy was a sure thing but I get what you're saying. Agree on all the rest though. It's funny that we could watch the 5'9, 215, 4.4 forty Cedric Peerman look great in preseason in 2010 [31 carries, 201 yards, 3 TD] two years removed from an impressive Senior Bowl showing but still not be good enough to contribute in real games. Makes me wonder exactly how slight the line is between success and failure for a back in the NFL, how close the margin is for a Lache Seastrunk becoming either the next LeSean McCoy or Cedric Peerman instead.

Some of it is just plain opportunity, I swear. Dennis Johnson went out there this week and ran 13 times for 74 yards. The guy was cut in final cuts, bounced around different teams. Bobby Rainey too.

... which convolutes it all the further b/c Rainey was amidst a pile of sh** in Cleveland when he was cut.
Then in Tampa you have 1st round stud Doug Martin running for 3.6 yards per carry and the ground game looking questionable, then 6th round Mike James comes in and runs for for 158 in his first start, only to be outdone by the undrafted Rainey's 163 and 2 TDs. WTF is going on here.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and prematurely call Kapri Bibbs my darkhorse if he declares. Not sure why he generally seems to be in the junk mail pile. Maybe b/c no one watches Colorado State or b/c you have to sift through crap to find clips of him. I'll have an eye on Bibbs if CSU makes a bowl game b/c he looks the part of Gio Bernard. 1064 rushing yards & 19 TDs in his past 6 games.

Never looked into him. Before we get started on his tape these are the things you have to know about him:

    1. He's a redshirt SOPHOMORE. Technically eligible for the draft, but no suggestion he'll come out.
    2. He's listed 5'11" and 203 lbs, and looks significantly smaller than that.
    3. He's rushed 238 times for 1493 yards and 25 TDs.
    4. He doesn't catch the ball much.
    5. He faced three good run defenses. They are Alabama (#7), Utah State (#8), Boise State (#18). After that the next-ranked are Tulsa (#74) and Wyoming (#91), and none others even in the top 100.
    6. Against those three run defenses he ran for 135 yards and 3 TDs on 48 carries (2.8 YPC).
    7. He has no history of FBS carries prior to 2013 as he's a JUCO transfer.
    8. He was Chicago Player of the Year in high school.
    9. Couldn't come to CSU straight from high school because of grades, played at Snow College and then went to Fort Collins which doesn't have a football team.

Just more Blake Bortles and Storm Johnson love here. All of their plays versus Rutgers.

The ones with (***) next to them are my favorites. I highly recommend viewing them, if for no other reason than to have fun watching. I added a (---) category for bad plays by Bortles.

Watch the fun plays from Bortles and tell me you don't see some Andrew Luck there. Didn't even have a truly negative play until after the half. Tons of fun positive plays to watch and only a bare handful of negative ones. A couple at the end aren't even really negative as he's in a situation when turtling the ball for a sack when the blocking breaks down is exactly the thing to do rather than risk a turnover trying to make a play.

Honestly I think that Rutgers game would probably be Bortles' signature game from the 2013 season. Basically it's the tape that says, if you like Blake Bortles, this is why.

    Thanks.
I'd like to watch those Bama, USU, BSU games to see how much of that was on his Oline allowing him to be engulfed all game.
    I think he looks about 5'10 205

    Here are some Bibbs runs.
    27 yard TD
    Impressive 20 yard TD
8 yard, 26 yard, and 18 yard TDs on back to back to back plays
5 yard TD, nice push at the ned
    15 yard TD
    Different angle of above TD
    25 yard run
    Long TD run
    15 yard weaving through traffic
85 yard TD & 30 yard TD back to back

    few runs from high school

He works the pocket and escapes pressure the same way quarterbacks like Wilson and Romo do. I think that's what's missing from Tannehill's game. That ability can help cover up issues on the line.

It's what stood out to me. Especially in the South Caroina game where he had to make Jadaveon Clowney miss. If you can run away from Jadaveon Clowney, you can manage an NFL pocket.

Pretty damn good arm if you ask me.

Biggest problems are minor footwork issues which lead to bad ball placement at times. Also, a little too confident in what he can do at times, which is a trait common among franchise QBs.

Really low interception count though. Very cerebral, which you get a sense of the more the more you watch him play. I included some examples with how he likes to disguise his QB sneaks on 3rd & 1. Uses his face fundamentals to disguise his intentions a lot. Subterfuge is a big part of his game.

If Ryan could anticipate and move around in the pocket like those guys you mention he'd have the higher ceiling than any of them.

Bortles has the trait but how much do you sacrifice your scheme from the pocket?

Bringing up Tampa Bay, New England and Carolina is a really bad counter point. You're not going to score every time you're down in the Red Zone. We're 8th in the NFL in Red Zone Touchdown Percentage. That's not really a weakness for Miami.

Nope, we dont. It's perfectly normal to have 37% of our RZ trips result in TDs the past 3 games, and it's normal to have no 4th quarter TDs the past 7 games. :shifty:

Not sure how anyone can look at our roster and suggest it isn't lacking in the redzone department. It's not a good sign when your starting receivers score less redzone TDs than your backups, and I'm not sure how you can think Miller & Thomas are dependable redzone runners. We averaged 19.4 points the past 8 games so hopefully you'll spare the excuse-making about how starters don't need to score b/c others can pull up the slack like you purported last year with Bess & Hartline.

that's pretty misleading b/c that percentage is HEAVILY influenced by our first 3 or 4 games when we were at 95%. Ever since then it's been mediocre at best, if not flat out bad, evidence by our 37.5% the past 3 games which is good for 29th.

I mean, he would be a nice player to have. I prefer Niklas. But playing in the Red Zone is not an issue for this team. That's a fact. Even last season, we ranked 11th.

Oh just stop arguing about it. You're being unreasonable. It's perfectly acceptable for an NFL team to average 19 ppg the past 8 games. It's a figment of your imagination to believe Miami's offense should be capable of converting more of those opportunities into touchdowns just b/c a team like Chicago can average 26 ppg with career backup Josh McCown the past 5 games.... or b/c the Lions & Cowboys can average 27+ ppg. :shifty:

Reading comprehension problems much? I suggest you reread my post b/c I said NOTHING about throwing out the first 8 games. I said the first 3 or 4 games. THREE OR FOUR. Furthermore, I most certainly CAN isolate the last 3 games and then some b/c those games COUNT and are a part of the season. If a team cant CONSISTENTLY execute in the redzone then they're not very good then are they.

I did NOT throw out the first 8 games. Reread the post. I stated the overall RZ TD% is skewed b/c the team had 95% efficiency through the first 3 or 4 games. Do you need a 5th grader to break down the mathematics of it?

Redzone TD efficiency the last 8 games has been 45.5%, which would qualify for 28th in the NFL.

4 of our losses saw our opponents outperforming us in the redzone, and in two of those games we lost by 4 or less points. Only an idiot would suggest our previous 8 games have been satisfactory just b/c the first 4 game RZ% was great.

Yup, it's terrible trying to debate with someone who's practicing sound reason while you, yourself, are acting irrationally. 45.5%. :wink2:

BTW, what happened to your racist "you only hate Hartline b/c he's black and doesn't run a 4.3" comment? You're right, it's about color. I couldn't possibly dislike him as a starter b/c he's a non playmaker who has been downright terrible in the redzone his entire career and b/c the offense has been pathetic with him as a starter in it. I love Jordy Nelson, who is WHITE, so STFU. If Mr Falldownamatic could do half of what Jordy is capable of I'd probably like him as a starter too.

Does anyone like Marqise Wilson in this draft? I'm hearing more about Mike Evans and Sammy Watkins in this thread than Wilson.

I think you're talking about Marqise Lee from USC (Marquess Wilson was in last year's draft). He's a junior this year and has had a relatively down year due to the situation at USC, injuries, etc. He's missed three games and been limited in a number of others and subsequently only has 604 receiving yards.

I've seen some draft boards projecting him to come out, but I just can't see it. I'm not sure why you would come out in a down year full of injuries. Even if he did come out on a great year, I think he'd still be behind Watkins and Evans from a purely skills standpoint.

Ahh yes, Lee. Sorry about that. Just wanted to know what some though about him. I remember watching him as a freshman and thinking I can't wait until this dude hits the NFL. NFLDraftscout does have him ranked 3rd, as well.

I thought you said our redzone offense didn't need any help?

Odell Beckham Jr. is someone I think we can be in on.

The Dolphins' biggest problem in the red zone (to the extent that they have a big problem, and I agree with Anonymous it's being a bit overblown because people tend to have zero-tolerance for field goals in the red zone) is the short-yardage game. They have none and it's leading to downright BAFFLING play calls.

So I am going to naturally express some skepticism that the answer to those red zone problems (again, to the extent there are any) is a big, kind of slow tight end with magnificent hands and an inconsistent blocking record.

I think rather if you want to "fix" the red zone woes (if they can be called that) then you need to look along the offensive line and at the backs in the stables and figure out why the Dolphins cannot earn a yard the hard way unlike the rest of the NFL which earns that hard yard about 70 to 75% of the time.

And I don't think Austin Seferian-Jenkins will help that.

That's not a good comparison to McCoy.
