Because I think he was an awful CB that made zero improvements from his rookie season.

I think he has made adjustments for sure. One he plays the ball tremendously better then in years past. He had to be the worst corner in the league when the ball was in the air, and he hasn't been a huge liability this year in that aspect. Like I said, I'm very pleasantly surprised. We can agree to disagree here.

I was effin livid when the ball went through his ---k beaters in the 4th Qtr against Carolina, but now that the dust has settled from that game and take the whole season into perspective, his play has not been bad. Considering he's started most games out of necessity he hasn't been picked on like years past and when teams tried to target him as a weak link, he's held his own(trying to forget N.O.) for the most part. On the other hand, Reshad Jones has been stinking up the joint and Jimmie Wilson doesn't look good either despite being put in position to make plays.

Eh, my view is with Grimes on the other side Carroll is being targeted more with mixed results

His ball in the air skills have improved, and he's not a awful player, it's more if he were compared to a diet, it's like he's lost 10 pds of the 40 pds he needs to lose.

Found him a far more interesting player when he also returned kicks

I could live with Nolan Carroll and Alterraun Verner as next year's starting corners, with rookie 4th round pick Russ Cockrell and Jamar Taylor and Will Davis competing for snaps.

I would also like to see the Dolphins accomplish a trade down and add a pick or two. Perhaps nab Stanley Jean-Baptiste in the 3rd, especially if Clemons doesn't return. Baptiste is a very smart kid and may be able to handle competing at both safety and CB.

I would like to have Grimes back, but how much do you really give a 31 year old CB?? Countless teams have given big money to aging corners only to see their play fall off the edge.

I'd rather give Verner the big bucks, he is only 25, and a highly intelligent high character guy. The pressure is going to be on the Dolphins organization to acquire 1st class citizens to fill their openings.

Patterson has to be cut. We can't pay a guy 5 million to watch games. It is what it is.

Verner would probably be franchised. He's so good.

Then you add the fact that they played lousy during their first 2-3 years in Miami, and then Jeff didn't anticipate that they would improve. So, he spends a 2nd and a 3rd on corners that now cannot see the field because two players have stepped up their game. It's this lack of anticipation of player improvement that makes him such a poor GM. He took two corners when he could have taken solid offensive linemen that are a lot better than the guy he wasted a 3rd round pick on. Miami passed on TWO offensive linemen that would have not only helped out this year but would have been better for the team down the road in a zone blocking scheme. Those two are David Bakhtiari and Geoff Scwartz. You can throw in Hugh Thornton as another guy we passed on that is a good fit for a ZBS. Instead, we take Dallas Thomas whose biggest weakness is his foot quickness.......for a ZONE BLOCKING SCHEME. That's TWO years in a row this GM that apparently shouldn't be fired according to you has drafted TWO offensive linemen high when neither of them have the foot quickness to play in a zone blocking scheme. Thomas can't even get on the field and has been passed up by a UDFA and a street FA at left guard.

Carrol isn't a great player but he's been solid this year. As KB21 said very much improved. He's not deserving of this thread, IMHO.

    My prediction.

If Jeff Ireland is retained, he will make the assumption that Nolan Carroll is on the verge of being a star cornerback and will resign him to an extension. He will then let Brent Grimes and Dimitri Patterson walk, using age as a reason to not give them an extension. He will expect the coaching staff to make do with his draft picks Jamar Taylor and Will Davis at the other cornerback position. The free agent money saved from Brent and Dimitri will probably be thrown at Branden Albert or Michael Oher, neither of whom are a great fit for a ZBS. Oh, and we probably let Starks and Soliai walk as well. This would be typical Jeff Ireland creating a hole to patch a hole philosophy.

  12. Anybody know how our former corners, Davis and Smith, are doing this year. Not throwing rocks, just curious what kind of seasons they are having on their new teams.

Yeah, I'm a Jets fan, get real bro, no way in hell would I be a fan of the Jets, Bills, or Patriots. Love my Dolphins for life, just tired how every year I think we can be good and then the exact opposite happens.

Sean smith in the chief loss against the chargers was downright embarrassing, he gave up big tds, at times couldnt back pedal without tripping over his own feet, gave up chuck plays, and plays with an attitude that he thinks he's better than what he is, he's a liability on the field.. I'm glad he's off this team.

They are doing very well. In the first quarter of the season Smith and Grimes were neck and neck in the top 20 and Davis was top five.

Out of 111 qualified corners, Smith ranks 34th in passer rating. In Yards Per Cover Snap, he ranks 43rd. So overall, he's having a nice season.

Out of 111 qualified corners, Davis ranks 94th in passer rating. In Yards Per Cover Snap, he ranks 62nd overall. So, he's having a pretty bad season. He's given up 7 touchdowns overall, the most in the NFL.

If we don't squeek and crawl into te playoffs I don't see how you can not fire him on production alone then you add in the distractions and it's almost a certain minus a playoff appearance miracle.

Geoff Schwartz? He was a 7th in the 2008 draft. Backup in KC now.
If he mean his brother Mitchell, he was taken before our 2nd round pick last year, and went earlier than most people thought he would.

I've been pleasantly surprised by NC, he's been forced into a bigger role than anticipated and performed well. I'm not ready to throw money at him the way I am with Grimes but we have much bigger issues on this team than Carroll.

Davis is doing something right, because PFF has him 5th in their coverage rating.

I don't put much stock in their ratings. I don't know how he is that high giving up that many touchdowns.

I guess you could ask them. It seems to me most people don't put stock in the ratings when they don't support their own notions about a player. That's just generally speaking. How many of his snaps have you focused on this season? As I recall, you have been strongly supportive of Ireland's decision to trade Davis from the get go.
