You know betting the jets of all teams is about as satisfying as it can get. I just hope we don't get tied down to Sherman next year . many people are assuming we will make the playoffs but we still have lousy play calling and no Oline so I don't see us beating the better teams and heck we lost to the Bills and Tampa Bay so its not a given that we get in and nobody is predicting that we get in .

So if we do win 9 games and make the playoffs does this mean we will be cursed with Mike Sherman and the oline coach for next year ?

I think the depends on the next 4 games. But even then, you never really know with our management. Sherman definitely wasn't the worst part of the team today though.

I don't think many people are assuming we make the playoffs, I think they believe we have a shot, big difference.
Overall, I'm still sticking with my preseason prediction, we finish 7th in AFC due to tiebreakers.
as far as Sherman, while we can probably do a lot better, we can also do worse. If we bring in a new GM who can solidify this Oline and draft a good RB to complement Miller, then I think Sherman's offense will look a lot better to us.

Mike Sherman isn't going to be fired without Philbin being fired. So basically every win is bittersweet, if the end result of this team winning is they don't get fired, it's kind of a big problem.

Mike Sherman's big problem is that there is no flow to his play calling. He doesn't exhibit a good feel for what is actually happening in the game. It will not surprise me to see him "reassigned" within the coaching staff. I know early in the year there was some speculation that Mike Sherman's play calling was not what Joe Philbin was wanting. Joe likes to delegate though, so he didn't step in and overrule him on his calls. Early in the year, Sherman was talking about getting a balanced attack, and Philbin made the comment that said "It's nice to be balanced, but you have to score points." The speculation was that Joe wanted to throw the ball while Mike wanted a balanced attack. It will not surprise me to see Joe Philbin bring in a more pass oriented coach and reassign Mike Sherman. Mike is actually a very good offensive line coach. At least in his history, he has done a very good job with coaching linemen. It may be that Sherman ends up getting the assistant head coach title to his name and becomes the team's main offensive line coach. Turner may end up having to fall on his sword for the team.

Let's see, we haven't been able to run in 9 of our 12 games and Tannehill can only throw about 40% of standard NFL passes accurately while under pressure. While I agree that Sherman should be replaced, he's calling the plays that minimize his boy Ryan's weaknesses...which means he's actually doing a pretty darn good job with what he insisted on working with.

And what limitations are those? It certainly aren't these baseless limitations that most of you completely make up when you are looking for a scape goat. His so called lack of pocket presence has been debunked countless times. This idea that he struggles throwing the ball down the field has been debunked. The fact of the matter is, Ryan can make all the throws an NFL quarterback needs to make. Youth is a factor on some things he needs to pick up from a mental standpoint, but there is absolutely nothing physically wrong with Ryan Tannehill. He is not limited physically in any way, shape, or form, and what he is currently lacking for due to experience gets better each and every time he goes out. Ryan had a 0.34 WPA in this game today, easily the team's highest which means he contributed to this win today more than any other player, yet some on here want to continue to make baseless criticisms of his game.

Sherman's tendancy to give up on drives when its second and long drives me crazy, but I agree that if the team finishes 9-7 and/or gets in the playoffs, he isn't getting fired unless Philbin does. If the offense implodes in the final four as the team finishes with a losing record, then he might.

    1) Lack of pocket presence has been debunked countless times? He's leading the league in sacks because he freezes in the pocket. I will admit that he's been 10x better staying mobile over the past two weeks but that doesn't "debunk" anything.

    2) How many TD's does Tannehill have this season where he's thrown the ball down-field and hit his receiver in stride? Let's see...never to Hartline, never to Wallace, never to Gibson, and never to Clay. He does have 5-6 nicely thrown deep passes to Clay though so that's something, but way way below the average NFL curve.

    3) Since part of every NFL throw is the deep ball, I could just skip this one but I won't. That slant pass to Hartline today was beautiful...why have we only seen it completed once all season? Why has Tannehill NEVER completed it to Wallace even though it's his highest-percentage catch for a TD? For that matter, why is it that we never pass anything over the middle as a primary route? Ryan can't throw any of those passes under pressure, and it's why we're the lowest scoring offense in the league.

Like I've said countless times before, I like Tannehill and he may eventually turn into an elite NFL QB, but he's far too inaccurate at this point. For example, remember Wallace's TD today? Sure, the stats give Ryan a TD pass on it, but the fact is that he threw the ball 2 feet over Wallace's head on a ridiculously basic play. The touch pass to Clay on 4th down and goal? Missed it by at least 5 feet. I can go on and on, but there's really no point.

You never know, even if we go 10-6 and win a playoff game, Philbin may have a heart to heart w/ Sherman in the offseason, an Sherman suddenly retires to spend more time with his family. At his age, it's entirely possible.

    Win-win?

Then again, if we manage to go 9-7 or 10-6, and even grab a playoff victory, perhaps it will ultimately be due to an improved Sherman? (either that, or an improved Tannehill, which is happening before our very eyes).

Just my 2 cents, but my biggest complaint regarding Sherman is that when the offense gets into a hole like 2nd and 18 (or long or whatever) due to a sack or penalty, he seizes up. It's like 'damn...we f'd up lets just give up'..kinda mentality...We'll call a zone stretch run then a wr screen for 4 yards or something and it's 4th and 14...He doesn't even try. I mean what?...2nd or 1st or 3rd and long too freakin insurmountable for you buddy??? Can't try to get 10 yards on 2nd down at least? Sometimes the drive starts well and Tannehill gets them to the other teams's 30 yard line, then someone draws a penalty...Sherman just gives up...drive dies immediately. TRY SOMETHING BETTER DAMN YOU!!!

Exactly, it is very obvious. And if it's obvious to us, you can imagine it's extremely obvious to opposing defensive coordinators in those situations, thereby compounding the O's ineffectiveness.

You can't throw a touch pass on fourth down, there's really no way to say it, you just can't..

Today the Jets were bent on preventing the deep pass to Wallace. With their safeties deep, we sliced and diced them up and down the field. Some credit for this has to go to Sherman and I like how our passing game sets up for the rest of the year.

Having said this, his predictability in the redzone has become nauseating. Almost every team uses first down in goal to go situations as a pass or rollout with run/pass option. We try the 3 yards and a could of dust theory - only we get stopped for no gain. Bottom line, we need more imagination in the redzone.

As for Sherman, I don't see him going anywhere. For all his faults, there is value to continuity. He's slow to adjust but the adjustments eventually do come.

No you need a higher percentage pass in that situation but it should come on 1st down not 4th down.

Yup. I agree. But don't waste your breath man, some people feel like Ryan Tannehill is playing perfect and is beyond criticism. It's ridiculous. But whatever. I just hope he continues to improve. He has been making improvements in certain areas.

If Philbin was dissatisfied with Mike Sherman's play-calling, I think we'd see some sort of amelioration of some of Sherman's more problematic traits. He's got the ability to step in, offer guidance, ask for a change, etc. Hell, we're not even seeing the level of shift within the season we did last year when at least they altered the run scheme a little bit after it was blatantly obvious that they couldn't run the outside zone well.

Not to be contrarian just for the sake of being one, but almost no one here (perhaps I can even remove the almost) thinks Tannehill is playing perfect or is beyond criticism.

what I thought about our offense is going back to the saints game when we threw to Clay and Hartline and then through a pass to Wallace in the first half we played the Saints tough but then we would be too predictable .

I will honestly admit I like our talent and it seems in our loss to Tampa Bay we ran those plays that were mot working and we abandoned the plays that were getting us down the field so I wont blame Tannehill . I like Charles Clay and Mathews and I am starting to love Hartline .

I am not worried about playing the Bills or Jets again if we play them once more . The thing that scares me is playing Denver or KC Chiefs at their places .
