Some of that is because he isn't a fluid receiver. He seems to fight the ball in and he often he pauses and watches the ball into his body. Usually the drops are when he is in traffic. I agree with Padre that he is inconsistent and he free lances on routes. He also forgets to delay block or chip a defender in his haste to get off the line too quickly. Still, he is having a very good season. Makes you wonder just how good a season Keller would have had. In this offense, Keller would have put up great numbers IMO... Clay is currently ranked #9 in yards, #51 in yards avg., #13 in ypg, #11 in TDs, #14 in 1st downs. Stats: http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...archive=false&conference=null&qualified=false
Yeah it's weird, I used to talk about that same stiffness when it came to him being able to separate, I just didn't think he had enough wiggle throuought to be as good as he has displayed this year..I'm not the best source at this point when it comes to him but it looks to me from comparing what I saw, is that he was just thinking to much as he came off the Los, which kept him from running his routes full speed..now I know for a fact he's coming off that Los with much more power, I should of known that he had that potential though with all of the jobs and versatility he displayed in college..it just took some time to understand all the roles in the scheme before he could get fully focused on his play speed..
Head to Head comparison of how Clay looks this season with some peers... http://www.nfl.com/stats/headtohead...ree=Jermichael+Finley&playerFour=Coby+Fleener
Yep ... I was ready to see him get kicked to the curb his after the preseason ... and will gladly say just how wrong I was about him
If you had told me before the season that we'd have a TE that gave us 60 receptions and 800 yards, I would have been thrilled. I expect that Clay's numbers will be about that (maybe a few more receptions). I'd like to have a TE with a greater end zone presence, but other than that I'm pleased with Clay's production. I was never someone who gave up on him. I always saw flashes, but I can't say I was a believer in him either. I do think that he and Keller would be a formidable duo.
Another solid performance by CC (5 for 75 and some really nifty RAC for a TD). I'm starting to dig me some Charles Clay.
Honestly I don't know, it's always a combination of things..I do know for a fact the guy works hard in the offseason on his craft, and for that I love him..and hope he inspires the rest of his crew to do the same. I also strongly believe that he wasn't playing fast because he wasn't comfortable yet in his responsibilities, which for him was four different positions, even Sherman comments often how clay was not the player last year that were seeing.
Nope. Dude can't catch 3 yard lasers above his head, also can't break a tackle to save his life. Cut him, let him be NE's problem.
