This is a dated article from August of 2012, but I think this article brings up some key points.

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Building-the-Perfect-NFL-General-Manager.html

This is a weak spot for Jeff Ireland.

This is another weak spot for Jeff. He presents himself as a hard nose negotiator, but he does that with everyone. He does not communicate effectively to agents, coaches, or players, IMO.

This is Jeff's weakest point. He is horrible with the media, and the media policies that he has continued in Miami since the Parcells days has had a negative effect on the perception of the Dolphins.

This is probably Jeff's next weakest point to how he handles the media. Jeff doesn't have a good grasp of building the roster. He gives the appearance that he does not take into account the cost of a decision being made, and he is usually reactive in his decisions rather than proactive. He doesn't have a good feel for player development.

Really, the only trait of a GM that I would give Jeff a passable grade in is talent evaluation. I've said it before, just sitting in the film room and evaluating talent is not his issue. His issue is everything else that goes into being a GM.

I thought he is the "good cop" to Aponte's "bad cop"?

Does anyone care how he deals with the media?

If the team wins I really don't care if they treat the media like a red headed step child.

So, you think it is OK that the Dolphins will schedule sessions with the media and then not show up?

The media is the organization's avenue of communicating with the fan base. Our handling of the media has shaped our public perception at this point, and the public perception of this organization is not good at all.

I think the team he built deserves the chance to see how they finish..shouldn't that be the way to determine a change of this magnitude..how the team finishes.

I understand the issues you are presenting, but personnel rules in this business and the personnel on this team has an opportunity to do something pretty special, if they pull it off then we should outweigh the positives and the negatives..

Some people apparently are very sensitive to how the media is treated. Personally I have no desire to see the team communicate with the media, so I don't really care myself.

Really? This again. Fire Jeff Ireland? WTF Get over it already. He is our GM. I support him 100%. Never have I, or will I, be ignorant enough to sit here and judge the job he is doing with out all the pieces of the puzzle. And none of us have or ever will have all the pieces!!!

I support Jeff Ireland and this team 150% until such time as the owner of this team decides it is time to make a change. Go Dolphins!!!!!!

    I'm ambivalent.

Why does public perception matter? I just want to see the team win consistently. Once that happens we can start worrying about non- essentials.

Which sort of hammers home KB's point in the fact that a lot of that personnel might not be around next year. 8 of the 22 current starters, more than 1/3 of the starters, are impending free agents. Talent evaluation is one thing; roster management is another. Jeff Ireland is pretty consistent with the former, but I think the latter is what makes a quality team good over time. I don't think Jeff Ireland's exemplified prowess with the latter.

think we can cut Patterson because of our depth and draftpicks

we don't need to sign all of them..solai,starks, clemons, grimes, mckinnie.

Indeed. Winning covers a multitude of evils.

You can be a Belichick or a Saban or be anyone you want but you have to lead a winning organization. As soon as you stop winning, you will get crushed by the media and the fans and that will have an impact. Ireland is really more dysfunctional publicly than BB in some ways (because he's all over the map - tries to be tough guy; then talks too much).

But, Miami just hasn't been able to build a nucleus of a consistent winning program.

Thanks for the clarification, I'm still not sure how that equates to bad management though.

I don't think any response I gave would lead you to believe the roster has been managed poorly.
