Even if Jeff did want him to sit so a roster bonus wouldn't kick in, which sounds ludicrous to me, he cannot force Philbin to not play him. Determining who is active and inactive on game day or who starts and who does not, isn't a power that Ireland has.
You've got a good memory. I remember seeing that thread but would have never been able to figure out who actually posted it. I just knew it was someone who didn't end up coming here.
How could you forget that?? I mean that thread made my LIFE! I used to get messages from moderators over there cuz I would constantly argue with fishypete and I would call him fishy for short lol. They took it as an attack at him.
I remember that guy since he was mentioned. I don't know how I forgot... it's been a while... LOL. I could only remember how ridiculous the thread was.
Does anyone doubt that Grimes will be franchised? I would love for a deal to get done for the next few years, but if not I would bet on him being franchised. I don't think we have to worry about him not being a Phin next season.
Wait...What??? His wife is his agent? I wonder who thought that would have a happy ending? And its one thing for his wife to get in a pissing match w a fan, but his agent.?! Let your play talk Grimes, we aka the fans are listening. Give miiki sumthin else to do with her??? I was going to say mouth but since its twitter I guess it would be a finger instead and I just don't think that would be the same at all. Sorry g.
I honestly don't see it. It's really his last chance to get a multi year deal. I could see him signing a Jeff Ireland special (aka under market ala Wake) just to make sure he gets a real payday.
What do you mean? Please elaborate. So if for example, Ireland told Philbin: You have to start Jenkins instead of Wheeler, that Joe would have no choice but to start Jenkins? Is that what you are saying?
He's saying if Philbin didn't want to start Martin, but Ireland didn't get any player better than Martin to play LT, then Joe more or less has to play Martin. I might rather have funnel cake for dessert, but if all we have is some stale oreos or fruit cake, I'm more or less forced to eat stale oreos.
I'm curious as to your opinion on why you don't think they would franchise him? So you think they get a deal done? And if they don't get a deal done, Irish lets him walk?
Because the franchise tender is over $11 million dollars for him. And with an offensive line that looks to need four new players at best (and five at worst), the contracts of Soliai and Starks (both will seek over 8 mil annually), and the fact that Ireland has young (albeit unproven) corners that he drafted this year, makes me think that they won't be investing that much money in Grimes. Especially if this injury lingers. To clarify, I WANT Grimes here, I just don't see them giving close to 10% of their cap to him like the franchise tag would force them to.
Granted, Joe has to work with the players Ireland gives him. That is not the same thing as saying he must start a specific player, just because Ireland wants him to. Could Joe have started Yeatman, Garner, or Jerry at left tackle if he wanted to, and had Martin be a backup? Yes. Not saying that would make a better line, though it could have I suppose. Just that who starts from among the 53 is ultimately up to Joe. No one else. Who is on the 53 is ultimately up to Ireland.
They'll franchise tag Grimes and release Patterson IMO... so pretty much offsetting the additional cost of the tag considering Patterson can't stay healthy.
I don't think either Starks nor soliai will get 8 mil a year at their age. And I think brenner has made his case for starting guard next year. Having those 2 draft picks at cb this year gives us cheap talent for next year allowing us to pay grimes. I'm hoping they can work out a 4/30 type of deal
I know his wife is borderline crazy, but usually where there is smoke, there is fire. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-dolphins-1218-20131217,0,619675.story Grimes is of the mentality that all he can do is keep playing and focusing on the present, but you can tell he wants continuity. From what I can tell he likes it here in Miami. Hopefully we find a way to give him a multi year deal. PS. Sorry for linking an Omar article.
Both Soliai and Starks will be 30 going into next year. Considering how effective both have been over the past few years (including this one), I can definitely see both of them getting paid. We won't be able to keep both, in my opinion.
I am not sure that Grimes isnt more of an asset than Starks though...Grimes makes that secondary. The rookies have developed because of BG. Consider dumping Gibson (as there is another opinion behind him) and DP and there you have 8M saved at that point that you can put towards BG..... I also think they should sit with Tanny, and extend him out as you could get him most likely at a reduced rate, as opposed to waiting until he hits FA.....
Am I the only one who would like to see an attempt to restructure and keep DP? When in, he's been pretty amazing.
I'd like to see him stay if he will restructure. You are right, he has been great when on the field. The problem is he hasn't been on the field much.
Right, but I think when people say, "Ireland forced him to start so and so," they are talking about the fact that Ireland didn't give Philbin any one better. I don't think anyone actually believes Ireland told Joe he had to start someone. I think this whole argument is a miscommunication between posters, to be honest.
There's no smoke and no fire. Grimes signed a 1 year "prove it" deal. Him wanting a big contract was understood and expected from Day 1. Don't let the local media mess with you.
Patterson's problem, as I understand it, is he won't play when he is even nicked up. No......bad film. The solution to that, from a team standpoint, is to pay him per game with an incentive......base salary + incentive. If he want's to sit out an extra game, it will cost him. I'm not sure he would agree to that, but if he wouldn't, I would let him go. He is very good, but that doesn't help if he is on the bench. I will hate to see him go.
where is smoke, he knows damn well no one was gonna give him a multiyear deal, we stepped up and gave him 5 mill, and we can't do jack until free agency begins..
Mos def..not sure what thread I wrote it in, but point blank, brent grimes says he thinks Patterson is a "great player".. And if you listen to him talk a couple times a week, he doesn't BS, when he says somethin he means it, and considering he himself is a great player, I trust that opinion.
Yes they can. They can go ahead and negotiate an extension right now. Chances are though, Jeff is going to piss off Grimes's agent, and we will end up losing him.
The salary cap situation isn't really all that tight. They've potentially got like $40 million dollars in cap space.
I edited my previous post after you replied. I made a typo or whatever one wants to call it. I guess you understood what I meant to say, not what I actually said in that one instance.
