It took Rodgers a long time too. All along I've been saying that we won't get near RT's potential until year four or five. That was when Rodgers finally got to start. Before then I'm sure he would have looked tentative and indecisive at times too.

And sort of off-topic: Nobody has as much of gift as DJ for making everything sound dirty.

I'd take Rivers. Ryan has never shown the ability to carry a team, Rivers has.

I don't think he's a franchise QB yet although there are encouraging signs he might become one. Right now his biggest flaw IMO is his deep ball accuracy. I think you need that to be an elite QB

I've got my own way of "tiering" QBs.....some allow players to play at their athletic potential think Matt Ryan, some raise that potential think Peyton Manning and some don't allow players to hit their max think Blaine Gabbert. I think THills floor is Matt Ryan but his ceiling could be a lot higher.

You'd take Philip Rivers over Ryan Tannehill right now?

Rivers is my favorite of the second tier QBs. However I think if Ryan simply shows consistency he will surpass him.

I am quite proud of our young QB! He has all the intangibles, and he's getting better. I think he is the genuine article...

Sorry, I thought the convo was about Matt Ryan. I doubt I'd trade RT for any QB in the league. The HOF level guys all have far fewer peak years remaining and I believe that RT has the potential to reach their level. I see that likelihood as high enough that I wouldn't trade all those extra years for an older QB who may not fit our system as well.

I agree with this. Tannehill even this early in his development has shown he can raise the potential of his surrounding players.

Look at Hartline. In two years with Ryan, Hartline has more receptions, yards, and same number of TDs than his previous 3 seasons combined, and this year is still not over. Brandon Gibson was also well on his way for a career year before the injury.

Also, look at the sorry season Devone Bess is having in Cleveland compared to last season here.

He will and needs to get better, but his positive impact on his weapons is undeniable.

Pasta from scratch is not that hard, specially if you have a pasta roller. Taste better than store bought dried pasta too.

In becoming elite..I believe his biggest weakness is pocket awareness and escapability..it's gettin a little better, but he offsets that by improving from the pocket..but to compare him to Rodgers when it comes in that dept is not accurate, pocket manueverabilty and escapability is a strength of his..that's why I said he's got a long way to go because the level of extreme difference on those traits is high..

He still has many flaws. The two you mentioned and even decision making could both stand improvement. All of those should improve with time. Deep ball accuracy is a question mark. Some QBs never improve there

Over Matt Ryan. I brought up Rivers, dj brought up Matt Ryan to contrast vs Rivers, and raffi chooses Rivers over Matt Ryan.

    Keep up Fin D!

I like Matt Ryan a lot. He's a guy you win a Super Bowl with. He's not a guy who can will you a superbowl appearance. But put decent weapons around him and he performs pretty well. As bad as he has been this year, his numbers, aren't too bad still. His TD% has taken a hit. His INT % is just slightly above average (surprisingly so). That's without his two top weapons for most of the year.

I'm not a big fan of Rivers but I can't deny his abilities. I see him throw a lot of stinkers in crucial games. A lot. I'm talking sidearm throws into the dirt 10 feet from a receiver. But he hasn't played with a lot of receiving talent.

Don't tell me you'd be very, very tempted with Aaron Rodgers. That's 6-8 years of HOF play barring injury and decline. And I'd like to think he'd fit our system :D

He has less mileage than most 30 year old QBs.

At the end of next year that decision would be more definite. Right now, it'd be very, very tempting.

He's experimenting with his deep ball at this point, in game, I've seen him thinking about his trajectory at the wrong time, I want him to drop get to his setup point ASAP and just throw the ball out there with his natural trajectory...I've heard some ask for more loft, I would disagree, he has a natural flatter trajectory and I think when it comes to the deep ball you don't fu&$ with what comes natural, cause it is all about feel...for example, Dan Marino never threw the deep ball like one would imagine, he didn't know what loft was, he saw the step on the def back and he just fired the ball the only way he knew how..

One thing to note about this:

Those of you who pay any attention to the stuff I say on this board (besides the anti-Ireland stuff) will know that I believe TD/INT ratio correlates highly with winning and losing in this league. I did a stat monkey thread a couple years back that showed it having one of the highest correlations to winning percentage besides obvious ones like point differential, etc.

    Miami's win loss ratio: 5/2 = 2.5
    Tannehill's TD/INT ratio: 12/5 = 2.4.

    Coincidence? I think not.

He has two flaws on his deep throw. On sideline throws he throws way too many out of bounds. Overly cautious? Maybe? On ones where the receiver has a full step on the DB he tries to be to perfect. Those are the ones that probably need some loft and just let the receiver run under them

He really only has deep ball issues with Wallace IMO. From my perspective its two things.

First as you said, trying to be perfect. He needs to just let it rip.

Secondly, he waits until Wallace has a step instead of just anticipating that Wallace will gain that step. 9 of 10 times he will, he just needs to throw him open.

Rodgers would easily be the most tempting of those brought up (Peyton, Brady, Brees and Rodgers), but I'm still not sure I'd do it. There's just something about Tannehill being our guy that I value. I can't say it's a logical position. Rodgers is what I hope RT will be, but that's my emotional response. I can try to add some logic by pointing out that RT's contract is cheap for another couple of years and that would allow us to grab some key FAs and resign our guys more easily, but no position is more important than QB.

Which if I'm not mistaken, coincides with the offensive line shakeup.

I set a 25 Td goal for him this season, and it looks like he will hit it.

That to me is measurable progress, especially now that he and Wallace are on the same page.

Everyone overlooks RT's toughness too. The guy has taken a beating this year, and overcomes the pass rush. How many QB's have we had that haven't made it through an entire season???
