I mainly agree. I understand having a system, but at some point you nedd to stop stivking square pegs in round holes and adjust to what your players can actually do well.

I can just imagine McKinnie making the same suggestion to Incognito that he made to Brenner and Cogs just brushing him off or call him a douchebag...or worse, McKinnie not say anything at all

One of the key aspects of coaching Joe Philbin mentioned when he was being hired was the development of the team's players. While some of it is natural progression, I think overall, our coaching staff has done a really nice job over the two seasons they've been here in this area. Key young players like Mike Pouncey, Charles Clay, Nolan Carroll, Olivier Vernon, Jared Odrick, Koa Misi, Brian Hartline, even Daniel Thomas, but MOSTLY Ryan Tannehill have really thrived with the new coaching staff under Philbin's direction. Also, this may be more to player personnel, but I think the Dolphins have been able to win games (like last game, just for example) even though our first and in some cases second string guys have gone down. Other Dolphins' coaching staffs, even the one here under the same GM, haven't been able to do that as often in the past. Personally, I think you have to credit Philbin with some of that. Bill Belichek gets credit all the time for plug-and-play-and-win, and so I think it's fair to give some due Philbin's way there, too. And then, I agree with the folks who think he held the team together thru trying circumstances. The ship really could have gone down... and for a time it seemed like it was sinking and everyone was going down with it... but then somehow it stayed afloat. Whether it was the players getting to defend themselves, the coaches keep the myriad of distractions to a minimum as far as affecting the team, or just the team overcoming adversity, I'm going to credit a lot of it to the head coach.

On the opposite side, I still sometimes scratch my head at some of the coaching decisions, whether it's sticking with blocking and protection schemes as Disgustipate is mentioning or sending your low-in-confidence kicker out there for a 57-yarder after he's just made a couple in a row only to have his self-assurance crumble while the other team gets excellent field position... some things just don't make sense. Also, earlier in the year, Mike Sherman made a comment about Joe Philbin wanting to throw the ball even more than he was having Tannehill throw, and soon after that came a couple of games where we were able to run in the first half, but ended up passing an inordinate amount in the second half, which, in my opinion, cost us sacks, hurries, turnovers, and ultimately games. Especially when the OL pass-blocking was our prime weakness. That was coaching.

So while it's been a mixed bag, in my opinion the positives outweigh the negatives. For a team that hasn't seen the playoffs in some time and had to overcome the racism/bullying media rampage that descended upon Miami, Philbin probably merits at least a passing mention in Coach of the Year rhetoric.

    Pure speculation.

But you did make me think how the dynamics are reversed now. Instead of the Veteran bringing the young Tackle under his wing. It is the veteran Tackle bringing the young Guard under his wing.

Don't know that one way is necessarily better than the other, but these two are clearly better than what we started the season with.

One could argue how he's decided to groom Tannehill as a pocket QB..kind of forcing him in the pocket rather then allowing him to break and run..has had a big reason as to why Ryan is doing so well right now.

I'd argue for that. Tannehill has consistently gotten better under him and Sherman. Is that enough to win coach of the year?

This is the best coached team since Wannstedt 2001/2 imo, and those teams had some great coaches like Norv, Chan, Jim Bates.

  8. If Philbin gets into the playoffs then he should be in consideration for coach of the year

IMO it's a combination of both. Some players are developing, but I also think the coaches have made some adjustments as they figure out what the players do well and what they struggle with. For example, I'm seeing less of that stretch zone run. I'm also seeing Miller break some tackles rather than going down instantly. That's a combination of both factors.

I just hope this game - win or lose - stops this convo. If it's not clear how out-coached we are right now. It never will be.

It's brutal people. The offensive gameplan is so frigging bland and predictable. My gosh.

    Get rid of these guys.

We can't win because we aren't well coached. We're a talented team, with good players. We hang around and eventually you win games. Better coaching makes us a good team, whereas we're simply mediocre.

But hey we got 8 wins! It's an improvement. Let's keep everyone.

Naw who am I kidding the Dolphins are going to come out at halftime, actually run constraint plays, utilize Tannehills mobility, not completely telegraph their blocking scheme, etc and so on.

    It'll be a mother****ing Christmas miracle

I don't think this team is coached poorly but I also am not in the court of Philbin being a Dynamic coach either.
Granted they've overcome some issues this year to make a run but there are still a lot of weaknesses that have not successfully been adjusted for either.
I think there are issues with both coordinators which has been discussed in depth on these boards.
It's the HC's job to try and correct those issues and guide those coordinators into a better direction if he is not happy with what's getting done.
If the Phins do make the playoffs you'd have to have Philbin in the conversation but ultimately I wouldn't support him getting it.

Wow! Coach of the year? Please say it isn't so.

    Where is the coaching?

Allowing the bills to just run the ball over and over and eating up the clock

    WTF

    Philbin, you suck!!!!!!

Terrible, terrible game. One of the worst coaching do nothing games I have ever seen.....ever.

Today I am ashamed to support this coaching staff.
