Just be honest and go with what your gut has been saying to you, and not speaking and defending behind a projection that they could of finished 10 and 6..that has been my stance as to why we should just let it play out the last quarter of the season..it was all right in front of us.

Lets See, before the season started I projected and felt that 9 and 7 would be considered enough progress for me to let everyone keep their jobs, I figured if they could get 9 wins considering very certain variables, it would of meant a young team, with a young coach and Qb would of played some good football to show that the direction of the franchise was pointing up.

Well..either win next week..or get fired..you don't lose to the bills for the 2nd time against that offense, and then come home to lose against jets and try to tell me your arrows are pointing up or that you have the pulse of your team and know how to motivate them.

So..you better win..that's all that really needs to be said..you lose to the jets and they finish ahead of you, in your own house, with a rookie Qb..I repeat, it's a must win, jobs are on the line.

I'm being honest here, you won't see me in the Tannehill threads proclaiming we have found our franchise Qb yet..there is to much weakness in the playmaking dept for me to have confidence in the player when pressure corrupts the pocket.it is what keeps me from going there, for I am measuring him amongst some players that I do believe are elite..that is my standard.

We're back to square one with Sherman..has he developed this player correctly?, and more importantly, is he using the players skillset and strengths to his advantage in the scheme..?... I've been questioning and expressing my frustration all year, settling for the opinion that this type of developing needs to happen for him to become a better pocket passer.?.well, I'm done with that take, not rolling this dude out on the perimeter when he is so good at throwing on the run east or west, is inexcusable to me, not running the read option once in 80% of the games played when the Qb has about a 10 yard average on 20 carries out of it, because you think it might affect his future pocket potential, is freakin crap philosophy in my book..use the weapons you have to score points, that includes all strengths of the Qb...Jesus is that so damn hard to justify, am I gonna mess with your prescious school of qb'ing..let me just say this, thinking that your scheme can get it done all on its own, without your Qb making any plays with his feet, and obviously not practicing any extended play route adjustments, is wishful thinking.

Now here is the most frustrating thing for me, and why I haven't crowned the kid, and why it's hard to discern who is at fault, he has shown no ability to understand the importance of a premeditated drop, tuck, and run to set the tone, to soften the rush, but I don't know how much Sherman's development school has neutered this dudes instincts, but the combination is this dept is a joke considering we know the dude can run..

It's quite simple what I'm asking for here...you have a legit deep threat receiver that gets safeties playing back, that gets corners to turn their backs to him..you've got to understand that, you've got to understand that if the right routes are drawn up, the middle of the field could be open for a qb who can run, just make up your mind as you drop, see the lane, and make your move..this, is playmaking ability, this is setting a tone to start a game, this is showing awareness..telling him to do it, is good coaching, not listening to your coach when he says stay in the pocket at all costs, and doing it anyways, is playmaking ability..I keep hearing Philbin talk about what he considers a critical trait to a successful Qb, however, I'm not seeing enough to put him in the franchise
Category until I see that awareness and ability to escape, and playmake.

I know the kid is playing behind a JV line..so having him drop in the same spot, not moving the pocket during full game stretches, is downright pissing me off, Tannehill not taking matters into his own hands is pissing me off as well..their both pissing me off when it comes to the skillset you have at your disposal, coaching wise, and individually...change your damn plan, and win at all costs..cause now, you just might find your asses at home come playoff time, and believe me, the criticisms that say why didn't you use the entire skillset when you had it all right in front of you, will be valid as hell.

I'm tired of hearing the head coach talk about how his team needs to come out fast, and them doing the opposite..

Hartlines attitude..he's a little pric sometimes, I personally don't like the way he treats the media, don't care how dumb they are sometimes, he needs to check himself after that game...he ain't THAT good to be talking like he does.

This team obviously wasnt prepared mentally to understand the relevance of the game..to me that falls on the head coach for not being able to relay a message that your team has not accomplished jack squat yet, and that this game needed to be played at the highest level they can give, everything was on the line when you control your own fate.

For folks who say well, it's one game, it happens, just throw the tape away, well, we no longer control our destiny..and that is a major incomplete accomplishment considering who we were playing.

Will a win against the jets change my mind even though we finish with the record that I said preseason I would be satisfied with??.. I don't know, this kind of loss raises some tough questions..

I'm not really sure what the question is DJ lol... but I'll take a stab.

    - I said this team, barring major injuries should finish at least 10-6. We've certainly had our fair share of injuries, and they contributed to some loses in the -early-mid part of the season. Some losses were more forgivable than others. But the loss against buffalo is unforgivable. It's not even so much the loss, it's the way we lost. Utterly dominated. From players to coaches. It was sad and pathetic. If we finish 9-7, it's not good enough. Too many close wins and too many close losses that could of gone either way. We were more lucky than not, IMO. We end up even or slightly positive this time. Next season? Could easily be back to 6-10 with the some more bad luck than good.

    - Tannehill: 4 years. I'm giving him all 4 years before I truly judge him. He's good. He's gotten better from last year. He's ability to throw a 9 route is shockingly bad. Wallace is always open and Tannehill seems to always underthrow him... Even with time. Aside from that, he's improved everywhere else. He's no Marino. Never will be, I don't think. I hope can be a top 8 QB consistently in the future. Shame Ireland blew his money load on Ellerbe, Misi, and Wheeler. Because we need 4 quality starters on the line next season. Going to be hard to do.

    - Offensively: I'm still not sold on the playmakers either. Tannehill and Wallace have no chemistry. Hartline has always had the dropsies. Clay is boom or bust. Lamar Miller can't get a hole to run through, so who knows if he's any good long term...

Over hear when the team aren't doing the business when they are obviously capable of doing so, the coach is fired without a second thought. Philbin was never gonna be The Man in my eyes. Remove him and get someone who knows what they are doing, oh and some passion.

Preseason I said 10-6 and a wild card spot. That was obviously before I knew we'd have a historically bad offensive line.

Getting to 9-7 and into the playoffs would still be a very good accomplishment for us. With a 2nd year QB who's clearly progressed, I'd say we are set up nicely for the future as long as we can fix the offensive line and Tannehill continues to improve.

What's my gut say about what? The state of the team is my best guess. As you know I'm a Criminal Justice major by trade and going by my gut and intuition is natural for me.

My gut tells me that there's enough blame to go around from highest up in Ross to the low man (or woman) on the totem pole within the organization. The organization failed us as fans today. If we won vs. Buffalo the scenario would be a lot different. Now, not only do we need to win, but we need either Cincinnati to beat the Ravens (I'm not sure how confident I am of Cincinnati's ability to do that, despite them being at home because they lost earlier in the year vs. the Ravens. They are at home this game and are trying to avoid a sweep, so there is that), or the Chargers have to beat the Chiefs (the Chiefs are 11-4 and the Chargers are 8-7. This one I have a little more confidence in since the Chargers beat the Chiefs the last game).

Before those thoughts would not have even entered my head. Now, they have to for the Dolphins to be relevant in the playoffs.

I have a major issue with that. I'll bring Al Davis into this thread. He said "Just win, baby", and for all the flak Davis got toward the later stages of his life (RIP) I think he did have that right. Just win, and you don't have to think about this, that, or the other thing. Just win, and you're in.

Well, we can't just win and we're in anymore and that's bothersome on multiple levels.

    1) We're not a good enough team to control our own destiny. This is bothersome because we're not dominant.
    2) We can beat the Patriots, but we can't beat the Bills? What's going on here, seriously?
    3) We have the opportunity to play meaningful football in January and the team loses to a division rival who are below us in the division, and once again beats a team who's higher in the division not long prior? This is unfathomable.

    The question becomes: why?

There really are too many variables here to figure it out. The owner is partially responsible for hiring who he has hired. Jeff Ireland is partially responsible for acquiring the talent. Philbin is responsible for getting the players ready to go. The players are all responsible for playing their best.

There are several position groups that are really weak (we all know which ones), and the fact that those position groups have continued to be a hindrance over an extended period of time are particularly troublesome. We have in Tannehill a guy who could potentially develop into the guy (I say potential because, like you DJ, I do believe he is improving, but still has improvements he has to work on, but then again don't we all?), but he's having trouble because he's not getting enough time, or he's not running out of bad situations, or the run game isn't working, or some other form of ineptitude that comes out during games.

The team goes down to the wire pretty much every game. This season is going down to the wire. I want to see us dominate from the opening quarter. Punch a quick 2 or 3 TD's in, let the defense pin their ears back and go after the QB relentlessly. Make the other team one dimensional. I'm sure it's much more difficult than that and know they try their best to get everything going, but it's highly disappointing from this end to watch this bull**** go down every week.

My gut says we need to hit a few of those positions early and often in FA / the Draft and that I'm not sure even if we get into the playoffs we'll make much noise. I know the team can get hot at the right time and go in a la the NYG a few years ago, but I just do not see it with this team. We play up to the Patriots and down to the Bills and we're left hanging on the coat tails of other teams' hoping they win for us to get in. This should not be happening.

I'm not saying we need to steam roll every game or have to be the 1 or 2 seed, but the 5th seed would be a nice feeling knowing we're not in or out and we basically have a wildcard spot locked up instead of wondering if we're in or out of the 6th. An AFC Conference champion Dolphins would be great, a division champion Dolphins would be great, but at this rate of a 5 year playoff drought I'll take getting in with the 6th seed, and we can't even do that for sure as we're left fighting for the spot.

It's sad. I know the organization wants Super Bowls. I know they want playoffs. I know these things, and then games like today happen, and not only does it dishearten me from a "the organization needs to do more to win", but it makes me question who needs to be changed on the roster, and I don't like that at all because by and large I bleed aqua and orange and despite the ineptitude at times I generally like the roster we have. They are a gritty group of players who fight until the end in games. There's something huge to be said for that in my opinion. They keep going, but at the same time it does not need to be that way.

Acquire some better talent at key positions where we can dominate the ball and go from there.

My gut says if we do not fix the issues we have we are doomed to repeat this next year, and that would be worse.

Tannehill has some developing to do but he's shown enough that we can go forward and plan with him. He gets a pass based on the line, the running game, and the weak coaching.
The loss is what it is. Its poor against a poor opposition. We did nothing the whole match and here we are. Very poor.

Crazyface - I don't agree with instantly removing coaches, and the idea of passion is over-rated. A 'rah rah' dude will only take you so far. The best coachIn this league is very quiet and very flat in public. That's stability is what you want. However, we need to combine it with some ruthlessness. Should philbin go regardless of how we finish? I think not, some of his coaches need to though.

Ireland Ireland Ireland. Oh Jeff, oh dear oh dear. I don't know. I don't know enough about his job. People can complain that Dansby is out performing ellerbe but dansby did nothing here and got paid way too well for it. At the start of the season I was happy with the pick up, been very disappointed in how it's turned out. Replacing him means a new coaching staff, means a big recycling of players, means a new qb, means a five year plan from now. I don't know. I really don't know.

This league has been average this year and we have been slightly above that average, we might get in and go one or two games. But it's playoff football, it's only 60 minutes which matter. Hate the loss but staying positive.

I predicted 10-6..I think. LOL. Whats my gut tell me? We layed a stinker. At a bad time. It happens. I think its foolish to try and read the tea leaves based on this game. The team has issues...same ones all year. But at this point..who cares? Really...Im enjoying being where we are. Its a far cry from talking about who we are gonna draft next season. Now we get a chance to get to the post season...at home..against the Jets. 6-3 in our last 9 games is nothing to sneeze at.

Guys...Im telling you. Enjoy being where we are. We are a team on the rise...we will all enjoy the offseason because we have a good team already in the works. Don't read anything into the Barfalo game. Dj pick your head up Bro.

I think the team definitely has issues to address. But overall, if we get in the playoffs I think we can make a little noise. Never know. We've beaten alot of AFC teams that they show on TV who are already in the playoffs or in the hunt. CIN, NE, SD, IND, and PIT. The team is capable but has some duds out there in some positions. hopefully can fix that in the offseason.

My gut says, "Same old Dolphins." Solve a problem at one position, cause a problem at two more. They never seem to put the whole package on the field. The QB play is better than it has been but the RBs suck at blitz pickup and the O line is putrid. The DBs are playing better and the D Line is pretty good, but the LBs are horrible. The punter is solid but the kicker is iffy and the return game is bad. Coaching is amateurish at times. This team isn't going anywhere without fixing those problems. The thing is, it seems as if every time we fix one, we create another.

before the start of the season, after spending over $100 mil and drafting all those high picks, i thought we should be no worse than 10-6 with a playoff birth. i mean damn, not even our staff could f**k this up, right? the one thing that i didnt factor in was the stupidity of mike sherman. this damn idiot has left so many points on the board that i have lost count. i dont give a damn how mediocre this offensive line is....any half decent o-coordinator with half a brain can gameplan around our one weakness. last week against new england, i thought sherman had finally seen the light. i had been begging to throw the ball to the rbs on swings and flares all year. its been f***ing open all year, and he finally designed 2 quick passing plays to the rbs which both went for touchdowns. HOW BOUT THAT!!! it took 15 weeks for that idiot to see it, but he did it. yesterday against buffalo pissed me off to the point that i didnt even want to come to this site right away. THROW QUICK PASSES TO YOUR F**KING RBS, DUMBAZZ. it was open just like every other week, and he didnt even call a play to it. we didnt score 1 point against buffalo? really? you can blame jeff ireland and this o-line all you want, but mike sherman (philbin's butt buddy) is the worst fu**ing playcaller i have ever seen. this team has enough talent to score 25-28 points per game, which would put us around 11-5 or 12-4, but coaching has been what has held us back. and my gut tells me that we will finish 8-8 because our coaching is shyt.

My gut says we just followed up our best performance of the season with our worst, and that's just proved what our season was, and where we are, in a nutshell...wildly inconsistent. We're not playoff ready, but on the other hand we're not in a position where we should be blowing it all up and starting again.

Changes have to be made this offseason, and not just tinkering around the edges, but fairly major changes. Lets start with Ireland for one, and although I think Philbin deserves longer there has to be changes made to his coaching team. If he doesn't and it's only players that are changed then I don't think he's the right man for the job. A HC has to be able to evaluate his staff and hire/fire without letting past relationships get in the way...Sherman I'm looking at you.

We **** the bed but it happens. Baltimore **** the bed, the Saints managed like 6 points through three quarters or something.

My gut says what the team does this coming week will be a good indication of our future. A win shows me we are going in the right direction winning four of our last five. Playoffs or not.

Hate to say it, but I was spot on. I predicted 9-7 and 7th in the AFC. I also predicted at the time that the Baltimore loss would keep us out of the playoffs. I hate being right on this one.

We need to look for a replacement for Ireland. Aponte is not the answer either. Keep Philbin. If Philbin insists on keeping Sherman, like he probably will, then punch Sherman in the face multiple times for that terrible playcalling yesterday. that was 10 steps back. Minimally, you have to fire Turner as well.

having said that. we are making the progress I was hoping for. We beat Cincy, New England, Indy and won in Pittsburgh in the snow. previous teams would not have done that. slow progress, but progess nonetheless

My gut says we are still a decent team, with lots of room for improvement.. Winning on the road against a team we don't match up well against is always tough, although I thought it would be much closer than it actually was..

I'm not going to point fingers to are flaws or blame the environment yesterday, we are still capable of winning if we can jes get in... But make no mistake about it, when the going gets tough joe needs to circle the wagons instead of sticking with what's not working..

my gut tells me we get in.. It's not about wins and losses, it's about how you respond to a loss like that and my gut tells me joe isn't too happy and will work extra hard this week to make sure our end is taking care of..

my gut also tells me no changes will be made this offseason, well unless you count breaking down this d line and adding money to the o line...

My gut tells me we have some major weaknesses that the coaching staff continually fails to mask up, and in this case, those weaknesses (Bad O-line, bad rushing defense) matchup perfectly with Buffalo's biggest strengths, which is why we got blown out.

My gut also tells me we will win our last game and back in to the playoffs, but now I don't think we will go far when we get there.

My gut tells me Miami we get the help they need and make the playoffs and the vast majority of the issues that this staff has will go overlooked by Stephen Ross. Miami will then lay an egg against whomever it is they play in the first round, even though they'll have beaten that team already this season.

I stick by what I said prior to the Bengals game; this staff (and front office) needs to be blown up and it's what's best for the long-term future of this team, IMO.

This roster has the QB, a blue-chip pass-rusher, and IMO, another potential blue-chip player, and this staff hasn't built around them correctly nor has the front office provided effective pieces around them.

We still have the best chance out of all of the teams fighting for the spot IMO.

We just need EITHER a Ravens Loss OR a Chargers win if we beat the Jets.

    1) We win: We will be playing the Jets at home (a team we already beat) after a devastating loss with our backs to the wall and coaches' jobs possibly on the line.
    2) Ravens Lose: The Ravens will play the Bengals at their house where they are UNDEFEATED for the year.
    3) Chargers Win: The Chargers will play the Chiefs at home, and they will probably rest their starters due to having already locked the 5th seed.

We need either 1 AND 2 AND 3 to happen or 1 AND 2 OR 3 to happen. I like those chances.

3 of Miami's 7 losses, have come against teams quarterbacked by Thaddeus Lewis and Mike Glennon. 2 of those 3 losses came after a bye week and a long layoff. That's more trend than a fluke.

My problem is, I drank the kool-aide fo the last few weeks. From the start, I thought we were a 7-9 team. We are. But those two wins against NE and Pitts really jacked me up. Once again, this team brought be back to reality and crushed me. They weren't prepared, they weren't pysched to play, they were out played, to a man and out coached. It's time for a reset. This isn't getting it done. Is is Philbin?? Is it Ireland? Is it the staff in general?? Don't know for sure. The OL year in and year out is atrocious. This year is no exception. The skilled players are there and Tanny is still developing, so a new staff will have the most important thing to work with....I'm just flattened, once again, by this team...

Yesterdays loss as well as the first Buffalo loss had nothing to do with Thad Lewis..it had everything to do with Buffalo's defense. It also had alot to do with the weather yesterday.

But thats the problem...we get way high with wins..and way low with losses.

We have good players..good things are on the horizon..and we have a great shot at the playoffs. Sounds good to me..

Exactly, 3 games Miami lost to were to teams quarterbacked by Thaddeus Lewis and Mike Glennon; think about it.

Think about what? There's nothing to think about. We usually play down to our competition. Would you rather win three games against Lewis..and Lennon..and lose three games to Brady..Big Ben..and Andrew Luck?

Why isn't beating the best Qbs in the league just as much a trend as your trend? Hey..look at it this way..when we are in the playoffs..we will only be facing good Qbs.

This is a team that can be great or be awful. They play to their opponents so if they do sneak in the playoffs watch out.

Those losses to bad QB's just goes to show how sometimes the QB isn't the end all be all of the team, there ARE other positions besides QB.

Buffalo's Defense player an awsome game. Give it to them.

Exactly, this Buffalo team isn't as bad as people are making them out to be, they lost a lot of close games... the AFC East is going to be a very tough division in a couple of years.

    My gut?

At the beginning of the year, I was crazy optimistic.
    * I predicted playoffs at 9-7 or better
    * I thought Tannehill would be our franchise QB
    * I thought the strength of our team was running the football and stopping the run.

My gut says I'll be wrong on all of those.

For the life of me, how can fans be happy about a team that misses the playoffs for 5 straight years, after a spending spree, with no repercussions??

Hell, that isn't American...haha.. life with no accountability.

My fear? No change. That Ross feels 9-7 is good enough for improvement. That would be detrimental to this team.

I'm beginning to think the issues with this team are coaching. The offensive line sucks. However, a competent coaching staff would have 15-ish less sacks with better line calls, play-calling, and responsibilities.

I've never seen a staff so stubborn. They refuse to utilize the strengths of players, chalking it up to "developing other skills or developing them the right way".

Why is Philbin getting so much credit for "keeping this team together"? And why is the team getting so much blame for crap play?

    What are coaches main responsibilities?
    * prepare their team
    * develop their players
    * put players in the best chance to succeed

How is making a line call that sees Daniel Thomas blocking Marcel Darius putting players in the best chance to succeed???

    My gut?
The coaching staff is garbage. There's talent at key positions. This team is mediocre. Jeff Ireland should be fired for lack of improvement and hiring this coach.

My gut tells me this is a little better team than it was last year, mostly due to Tannehill's improvement as a QB. Problem is, if Tannehill had stayed at the same level I think we'd be worse than last year. The offensive line has been dismal. On defense, they revamped their approach and while it has shown flashes the results haven't been particularly near what was expected.

Unless we not only get into the playoffs but at least make a little noise, I can't see how Ross could be all that happy. Here we had the opportunity to fight for a division title but now have to scratch and claw for the final playoff spot, 3 games behind a team that has lost numerous impact players this season.

I actually think we have more talent than last year. My issue is Sherman and Coyle being out coached, our defense has the same problems every game. This means either the players arent understsnding their assignmentz or the scheme has deep flaws.

I think we'll beat the Jets and most likely not get in due to tiebreakers. Hard to even say we'll beat the Jets though after Rex Ryan sees this blueprint though. Apparently, you can just do the same blitzes over and over and we will never change anything. Sherman has just been abysmal in multiple games, and as much as you don't want to change offensive systems on a young QB, how can he not be held accountable?

As to the future of the team, I think it's bright with Tannehill, provided you protect him and give him some weapons. I honestly don't know what to say with regards to the GM and Coaches, it'd really depend on what's out there. I dont think Coyle is the weakest link but I'd replace him with Rex in a heartbeat. Ditto if clear upgrades are out there at GM, HC, O-Coordinator. Otherwise, I wouldn't be opposed to another year of the same staff assuming we beat the Jets, although Sherman for another year would surely be painful. Reality is continuity would be good for Ryan's development.

My gut feeling is that we get into a very close game against the Jets, it will end 24-21, not sure who wins. There's going to be major changes in the offseason regardless, players and front office, not much coaching changes in my opinion. If you're an offensive linemen or running back, you should look at your left and right cause none are safe to stay in Miami beyond this year (and yes even Pouncey).

Do we though? The rookie class has contributed next to nothing. We substituted Wheeler and Ellerbe for Dansby and Burnett. Grimes has been a great addition. Wallace is overpaid but does carry some value. But we also let Reggie Bush and Jake Long go.

Until some of the guys prove it on the field I'm not seeing any tangible talent increase at all.

IMO, you let a quarterback run when he cannot make plays from the pocket. Ryan has shown that he can make plays from the pocket. I see no reason to start simplifying things for him when it could adversely effect his development. We have already seen examples of the scheme being simplified for quarterbacks in both Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin. In both cases, when the scheme expanded, they struggled at making plays from the pocket.

I think you will find that what the Dolphins are doing with Ryan Tannehill is no different than what the Packers did with Aaron Rodgers. The biggest difference is that Rodgers sat for 3 years before he got his opportunity.

I've said it all along though. Our biggest issue is the construction of the roster and how the roster is managed. We simply do not have enough good players at key positions.
