Was never on the edge here. **** happens, and sometimes the greatest test is how you respond to a huge loss. You can wilt or keep fighting. I will judge this team by that next week.

I tend to lean glass half empty with the dolphins. After yesterday's beat down in was pissed. I would have been irate if we were eliminated, but we were not! This post by rocky couldn't say it any better. I have been a fan of the dolphins since 1991. We have had a lot more downs then ups in that time and yeah we might not be dominant. Being a fan of sport this is what it's about. Having you're shot. If this is the nba or MLB sure we don't have a shot even if we make the playoffs. The better team will win in a best of series usually and that's that but the beauty of this game is a single elimination. No one thought the ravens win it all last year. Do I think we will? See above (I'm glass half empty guy) but to sit here on wildcard weekend with Super Bowl hopes makes me a lot happier fan. For the ones that want to mail it in for 1 or 2 spots better in the draft I feel sorry for you.

I want Miami to make the playoffs. I'm so pessimistic and beaten down. I want change on all fronts.

But I definitely want playoffs. They're so fun. They're so key to the development of a young team too.

If Philbin and co. aren't fired because the team makes the playoffs, it's bittersweet and almost certainly a long-term detriment.

How is it a detriment? Why should any coach only be given 2 years? He took a 6-10 team and made them 7-9. His second year he added atleast 1 more win possibly two from the following year. He's improved the team and that's all you ask for the first 2 years. Third year is the telling season but firing a coach after 2 years and a possible 3 win improvement over the team he took over is just plain dumb. That means new coach, new system and progress setback from younger players. All for a new OC but philbin stays

What really sucks is that with our clueless owner we don't even know if missing the playoffs would result in any change at all, he could easily just keep the whole band together. If we 100% knew that jobs were on the line in week 17 then yea, losing would probably be better for the franchise long term, but we don't.

the thought of Ireland coming back for his 7th year literally makes me want to vomit. It would just make this franchise even more of a league wide laughingstock than we already are.

You fire a coach when they've demonstrated that they aren't very good. They don't get an allotted period of time in which they are free to do whatever they want until it ends and they're judged. Keeping a bad coaching staff longer then you need to is a risk, and it's a problem.

This coaching staff is bad, and it's not just a wins and losses issue. They do not do their job well, and pretty much every aspect of coaching has been very suspect at times. If we don't fire them now, we're almost certainly firing them next year.

Totally agree about firing the coaches. They should be fired unless this team goes on an unforseen playoff run.

We all can feel we know our Franchise and its problems better than any other....but Franchises across the NFL all feel the same way. In this modern age of conformity, and competitive balance here is the 2013-2014 NFL Regular Season facts:

From a playoff standpoint its crazy:

By the laws of logic and the serendipity of the NFL season, no team "controls its own destiny" in the race for the final AFC postseason spot.

All four contenders need help. The Dolphins need the fewest factors to work in their favor. The Steelers need the most. The Ravens have the toughest Week 17 opponent -- a Bengals team that has yet to lose in Cincinnati. If Miami and Baltimore both stumble, San Diego is sitting pretty.

It's not just the AFC wild-card picture that is unsettled. As a matter of fact the Chiefs (No. 5 seed AFC) are the only team in either conference locked into place.

The other 11 spots (AFC and NFC) are fluid heading into week 17.

    Now, that's parity.

So suck it up fellow Dolphins' fans....we ride on, now saddle up!

They just did that winning 3 of the last 4, and it will be capped this week. Once you are in the playoffs...a run to the SB is not any longer than the 3 in a row they pulled off twice this season.

I still don't think we deserve to get in. Yesterday's game against Buffalo was such a pathetic performance I still cannot believe anyone is actually hopeful about this team. If thinking that (ie being actually realistic and honest) makes me a bad fan so be it. I've been rooting for this team since the early 80s, I always root for us to win every week but at this point after that Buffalo game its a stretch to say we "deserve" to get in, we don't. I love how fans tell other fans how to act or how they feel, I mean talk about idiotic. I don't care how you want to be a fan or not, I'm not calling you out, if you want to see the glass half full and be cheery so be it, I don't think this team is built good enough talent-wise to be a serious contender. With parity we can be a 9 win team.....great thats an amazing achievement. You're a great fan, I'm a bad one, whoop-die-do.

If we can win against the Jest and make a deep playoff run no one will be happier than me but can I sit here with any shred of honesty and say we've played good enough to deserve a playoff spot? Nope.

WADR it seems like your stance on "playoff deserving" is based entirely on the last game of any given week. Last week, did we deserve the playoffs?

Was Chicago the laughingstock of the league when they fired Lovie Smith after a 10-6 season?

Was Tampa the laughingstock when they fired Dungy after multiple playoffs and championship game apeparances?

The only question is whether you have the right guy or not. My issue with Philbin is whether he is actually using the players we have to the best of their ability and putting them into positions to succeed. We may end up winning 9 games and making the playoffs, which would be great, but those questions about Philbin will remain regardless.

Take Bruce Arians as an example. Arizona may not make the playoffs, but it is clear that he is putting his team in the best chance to win. Tough luck for them that they're in the NFC West. But that is a second eyar head coach (if you count his interim stint last year) that clearly has made a difference in both stops.

You play 17 weeks, 16 games. Not one. Not two. Not even 4 out of the last 5. You play 16, and that's how and when you're measured. Along the way, there are victories, losses, bumps, bruises, highs and lows, and they're never equal for any team.

However, you play those games given the playoff format set up with all teams' knowledge going into a season, and if you win enough games, including the tiebreakers, and end up in the playoffs, you deserve to be in the playoffs. It's really no different than, "You are what your record says you are."

It's weird that we could win next week and be in the playoffs. We could win and be out of the playoffs. Same with losing. But it was a long season of sixteen games, and each team is where they are, deservedly so. If you win and are in, JOY. If you lose out and aren't in, MISERY and AGONY. That's the NFL.

Well..yeh..firing Philbin in his second season..after improving on possibly multiple wins from the season before...yeh..the would look like a knee jerk reaction to the rest of the league.

Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy coached much longer then 2 years

Been rooting for this team since the 70's. Amen to you. We have been through this for the last 40 yrs! I know exactly what you are saying. We find it hard to dismiss what we saw yesterday.Saying that ...The weather sucked...Buffalo matched up well with us...Losing did not matter yesterday,we can still get in..we will play better next week and roll the Jets just does not change the fact that we sucked yesterday. It was a big game that we failed to show up for,and showed very little effort or focus. To come on here today and say We will get in the playoffs, What time or day do we want our playoff game on, we can make noise in these playoffs and are scared of no one(Hope Buffalo does not get in..lol) is lying to yourselves..Next week will be tough, if we get in the playoffs, that game will be tough. Do we have a chance this week and in the playoffs..always a chance. Am I full of confidence and bravado..Hell no! At 47 yrs old, I know that my eyes do not lie to me often, and my eyes saw plenty yesterday

Giving up on this team after 1 bad game? Wow. Don't let your door hit your *** on the way out. Are Ravens fans gonna give up on their team after getting slaughtered 41-7 by a team we beat last week? No, because they are good fans. Miami fans around the country are considered some of the most bandwagon fans in the country, and that's because of some of the bull**** attitudes of fans in this thread.

Anybody saying that either this team doesn't deserve a playoff spot or that they're done with this team can gtfo. Go be a Pats fan for all I care. I'd rather you all be bandwagon fans of other teams than a bandwagon fan of my Miami Dolphins.

This is all coming from somebody who has supported the Phins since the early 00's. I wasn't old enough to remember the Marino years and Shula years. My happiest moments of my Dolphin fandom are Greg Camarillo catching the OT pass to avoid 0-16, or ****ing Chad Pennington leading this team to only get slaughtered in the playoffs. But I will never stop loving the Dolphins, and I have zero respect for anybody that quits on them.

Who gave up on this team? Who stopped loving this team? Don't let the door hit you on the way out...are you kidding? So I guess keeping your head in the sand and just saying we are great, yesterday was just one game makes you a better fan than others? Hardly. To be honest about how they played makes you an educated fan. Nothing more. Did I think beating the Pats made us elite..lol no. Do I think losing to Buffalo makes us a terrible team...lol no. Do I think we should be concerned going forward..yes. Did I hear anyone say they hate this team and hope we lose..Hell no! All 10 yrs of you being a fan, and 40 yrs of me being a fan does not give us the right to question loyalty. Don't let the door hit you on the way out....laughable

Saying this team doesnt deserve to be in the playoffs is completely giving up on this team and one of the dumbest things Ive seen posted on this board. Yes it makes you a terrible, bandwagon fan. I feel embarrassed that you are a fellow Dolphin fan. And being a fan for all 20 years of my life gives me all the right to question your loyalty. You got to go through the Marino and Shula years, where the Dolphins were the loyalty of the NFL for a lot of that. Then once the going gets real tough you quit? Come on man. Pathetic.

Not once did I say they do not deserve to be in the playoffs, not once. Not once did I say that I quit being a fan, not once. Being a fan of this team for 40+yrs and living in N.Y and flying down for Training camps and games makes me a terrible bandwagon fan..LOL Seeing this team excell, before you were even born, makes me see things for what they are, not blind to it. Embarrassed that I'm a fellow phin fan..Pathetic?!! I think I have every right to say that I don't want you as a fan, I think I have more than a right to question YOUR loyalty...but I did not. I am fully embarrassed that you feel the need to question other fans loyalty, when no one questioned yours.

First of all, recognizing the problems the team has isn't "giving up on the team." Second it's not just ONE bad game. It's at least four bad games out of the seven losses.

You agreed to a post saying that they don't deserve the playoffs. Maybe you should have read that post better buddy.

Not it to mention no where in my post did I mention you specifically. So you obviously feel you're in the party that either has given up on the team, or feel it doesn't deserve the playoff. If you don't fall into either of those categories then why respond to me? My post wasn't directed at you.

We deserved to be in a do or die game like we were in. And our performance in that game, with everything on line, said what needs to be said about the team. Would you be arguing about keeping everything in tact and us "deserving" to be in if Baltimore wins last night?

Basically I'm saying we don't deserve it but I'll take it if we can get it. I root for the team but I'm honest about our chances and just how badly we got exposed yesterday. If we meet a team with a quality pass rush....game over.

While I want to see the Dolphins make the playoffs this year, I just hope making the playoffs doesn't fool Ross into believing he has the right individual selecting talent for this team. Because playoffs or not, Ireland needs to go after this season ends. There are just far too many holes throughout this team to justify keeping a GM who has held that position for the past six years,

While their overall record may not show it. It was clear yesterday that the Buffalo Bills have more talent on their roster than the Dolphins do at this time. So even if the Dolphins do make the playoffs this year, they are going to go into next season with less talent on their roster than the Patriots and Bills and the Jets are not far behind at this time. I just don't trust Ireland and his ability to select impact players for this team.

So right now the Dolphins better make the playoffs this year because with all the holes they have to fill going into next season, it may be quite some time before they have another shot at the playoffs.

100% of Dolphins Fans should feel this way...why wouldnt you want a shot at the ring - regardless of disappointment of most recent performance. Long-shots or favorites...always rather be one of the 12 in the dance, then on the sidelines with nose pressed against the glass.

3 in a row has been done twice already this season - against competition or scenarios we felt at first blush we didnt stand much of a chance...so once in, all it takes is 3 in a row to get to the final dance. Tis' the season.

This year more than any other...its wide open really once in. Crazy parity and all have weaknesses.

This fighting, this madness, it's good. We deserve to be tailspun. Our team let us down. Everything was on the line, and it was the worst performance in the Ross, Irish, Philbin era. 6th seeds who win the Superbowl dont get butchered to CRAP teams in week 16. They get hot and stay hot.

Do I want to beat the stinking Jets and go on a playoff run? Of course. Do I want to moonwalk into the post season and get slaughtered game 1 for all to see? Absolutely not. I'd rather not make it than wear the shame.

People talk about "deserving" it? Right now, the other garbage teams in contention deserve it less than us. If that means we deserve it, well I don't know?

I can actually see us getting into the playoffs, and beating a flat Colts or Bengals. But we are too immature to handle a single huge win. Laurels would be rested, like last week, and we would get stomped.

We played the Bills at the wrong time and got spanked. Swept. That in and of itself, is humiliating. That should bring up dissent and panic, and anger about this team. And we all should demand more, unlike Cowboy fans...who gaze at the star and get bamboozled by Jerruh year in and year out.

IF, we can get motivated, and can pound the Jets...and scramble into the playoffs...the tune will change a good bit. But dont forget this right now. Go read Dave Hyde's article, see how we couldn't stop a 5'7" undrafted FA all game. Not an adjustment was given. Read about him giggling, giddy...and their D coordinator boast at the "beating" we took. Soak that up, with the playoffs on the line.

We're still a slapdick team, as evidenced by this game. We don't take care of business yet. No one showed up. Not a coach, not a player. Although 7 sacks, a score of knockdowns and pressures, and many drops...I am not judging RT on this one, the Manatee 5 left their balls in Miami along with everyone else,

As William Munny out of Missouri once said,

Deserves got nuthin to do with it.

    Perseverance otoh...
This team has floundered with the league's urchins, yet risen to compete against teams of significant challenge.
As if it waits for a reason to fire up all its parts and pieces, or maybe a reason to persevere as it so frequently has, along the thin edge of that insufferable, go for broke, "down to the wire" game.
