http://www.tide.com/NFL.jspx Great piece to recap all NFL teams and color schemes and reasons, etc. Aqua & Orange = Perfection!
I agree, its a good thing we went back to aqua instead of that hideous 1990's Ford Explorer Hunter Green we had last.
Love it. I always have loved the colors as they are so unique and really do represent Miami so well. Thats why I loved the Marlins change a couple years ago so much.
I love the fact that...we are the only professional sports franchise to wear those colors. I do have to say....I realllllllllllllllllly like our new logo and the return to older colors.
Still dont like the prominence of the navy and lack of orange. in fact we cant really say our colors are aqua and orange....more like aqua and navy blue.
I miss the orange jerseys because it represented to me power , more physical presence . our players really do look faster when they wear the orange or aqua . the only reason I hate the all white is white is boring and when it snows at away games our guys are harder to see on tv . I wouldn't mid going back to the old logo and maybe trying a second color helmets for fun. I don't know what our uniforms would look like if our team wore medium blue with a thick orange band around the numbers and a medium blue and orange band around the sleeves.
That piece actually didn't address what caused the team to pick those colors at all. If you asked Bob Kuechenberg he has always stated that they just pulled the colors from the Howard Johnsons hotel franchise. I have to find the website that explained the entire process of the Miami Dolphins' logo and color scheme. It was an article from when the Phins were just starting and it explained the whole process. It was a really interesting read that talked about how in depth the team went in picking the colors and making sure they tied in to everything. It's why I get irritated by all the detractors that "don't like Aqua because it does not go with my Jeans" or "I can't match my jersey with any outfits so they should change the colors" people. A lot of thought went into the scheme. The mascot was as stated picked through a fan vote. The colors were picked by the original team leadership and were picked to match what makes Florida and Miami unique places. Orange was picked because of the influence of the sun (Sunshine State) and Oranges being Florida's top crop. The Aqua was the interesting one. Ocean color was a large influence but also the Dolphin fish..... that's right not the mammal but the fish. They got quite creative here. Not that the color needs to match the real life look of an animal picked for a mascot but they did consider it. Seeing as bottle nosed Dolphins are grey and not a match for the Miami scene they cleverly looked to the Dolphin fish to link the color used to the Mascot name. Dolphins or Mahi Mahi's have a striking array of blues, greens and Aqua colors on them. This pick also incorporated the view of Miami as being one of the sport fishing capitals of the world at the time. Again, the thought they put into it and making sure all of it touched on many aspects of Florida and Miami was really interesting. It's a very unique mascot and color scheme that could not match Miami better and clearly a lot of thought went into it. So next time someone wishes we were black and silver or all Navy remember the influences that went into the identity of this franchise and be proud of it.
Would love to see one of these "hunter green" jerseys. You won't because there never was one. You're talking about the dark aqua colors. Yes Aqua. A mixture of blue and green hues that can vary in shade. Some people may not have liked the darker shade but when they start stating they were "Jet Green" it seems like an effort to be overly dramatic.
Our colors are the main reason I am a Dolphins fan. When I was younger, they popped on TV and they were (and still are) so unique. No one else looked like that. I liked going against the grain and I've been a die hard fan for 20 years now.
I don't care what colors they chose I grew up in South Florida, but Uhmm Aqua and Orange is cool with me.
