There have been Superbowl champions with average QB before. So Im not saying the phins cant be any good. If you look at the great QB's in the league, each and every year their teams have +10,11,12 wins. Now before you say "well its not tannys fault that the rest of the team sucks" Look at Peyton Manning. Look at what he did/doing with the Broncos. A bunch of no name WR's on that team. Without Manning the Broncos are a losing team. With him they are superbowl contenders. You cant say the same for Tanny. Great QB's will have one or two bad games the entire season, and but up big numbers in like 90% of their games. Ryan Tannehill had some great games this season but he also had many bad games. He is inconsistent. This is why in my opinion he isnt the next Marino. And he hasnt that big of an upgrade from Chad Henne. If you want to blame somone for why the phins suck so bad, it starts with the owner for bringing in the wrong people to run the organization. Bill Parcells is responsible for the most damage done to the phins with all the wasted draft pics setting back the phins for years and bringing in Ireland.
Tannehill had a horrible game. His season was ok to slightly good. He improved and he should be the qb next year. Guy NEEDS to spend the entire offseason with Wallace. Lets look at it objectively though. He lost his starting TE, starting slot receiver, Hartline, the rbs were bad, and the oline was horrendous. He needs alot of work but all things considered he is not the problem.
It's a little early to jump to conclusions on him yet, isn't it? I'd say that despite the last 2 games, he's trending in the right direction.
He doesnt suck but he needs to work on the deep ball intricacies with Wallace as well as pocket presence. Our pass blocking is awful but he took a lot of sacks this year where the great qb's just get rid of the ball or step u; in the pocket or just do something to evade the rush. We got into so many 2nd and 3rd and longs because of sacks that can be avoided. Tannehill, as well as every other QB, would benefit greatly from watching tape with peyton manning.
Yeah, I still think Tanny can get better but I am not sure he will ever be an elite QB that Marino was.
I just want him to show some of his supposed athletic ability. His footwork in the pocket is horrible. I know the OL is pathetic but he needs to be able to do more when he's pressured. He doesn't seem to know when to tuck it and run and use his straight line speed.
It's a really good idea to make these proclamations after two seasons, because as well all know great QBs are always great from the moment the start playing in the NFL. They never, ever need time to adjust to the game, and they certainly never improve with experience.
You are right, his pocket awarness and deep ball need a lot of work. A lot of those sacks is not the lines fault he can avoid them. I bet you put P. Manning on the Dolphins and we are playoff bound and he doesn't get sacked a record 867 times.
Here we agree. He needs to run more for first downs. He started to and then the Buffalo game happened. I think he may have a leg injury.
So if you put one of the top five qbs EVER back there we would be in the playoffs? What a stretch. I didnt realize that he had to be Manning already
The offensive line still wouldn't be good but peyton manning and his extremely cerebral pre snap reads help his offensive line a lot.
wow. do you even watch other games? or just spout BS because you're upset that we choked so badly? Yes, he's behind Russell Wilson, but so are majority of QBs in the league. Tannehill improved his play quite a bit this year and right now is better than RGIII and on par with A Luck (although I do believe Luck distances himself in the end). Tannehill is better than Andy Dalton. unfair to compare him to rookies like Manuel and Smith, who he is better than both. Cam Newton is definltely outplaying Tannehill, not a surprise.
By what measure? The stats certainly don't back up your claim. He threw for more yards this season than all of the other "young QBs", while posting similar or better TD numbers.
Look Joe Flacco is a quarterback capable of taking his team to the Super Bowl. He had a bad year though but it wasn't all his fault. Joe Flacco, Andy Dalton...Thats the tier QB I see Tannehill in right now. To say that he can't get better is stupid in my opinion. Dalton threw four picks today, Flacco threw picks all year...Bengals are going to the playoffs because they are a great team, and Baltimore won the Super Bowl last year because they were a great team. Ryan Tannehill is the least of my worries right now. The linebacking core needs to be upgraded, and the offensive line needs to be fixed.
I watch enough FB to realize we are in trouble at the QB position. On par with Luck? Better than Dalton? Better than RGIII because of an injury. Nick Foles? Seriously?
Tannehil is no where near other young QBs. He is ranked 27th out of 32 wow. http://espn.go.com/nfl/qbr
I agreed with everything else you said so I didn't quote it, good post though. On the above quote I still think you're way off though; where were his great games? I look at an average game from Manning and he throws 32/51, 400 yards and 4 TD's/0 picks. I look at an average game from Brees and he's 30/42, 313 yards and 4 TD's/0 picks. An average game from Eli manning, who's currently in the bottom of the league, is 23/42, 1 TD/1 pick. Now let's look at Tannehill, the #20 QB in the league as of today. For the season, he averages 20.9 passes for 34.25 catches (61.1% completion), 1.4 TD's and .875 picks. He also generates 231.8 total yards of passing. Tell me where you could expect to win in the NFL with a QB averaging 1 TD and 1 pick per game? There's not a team in the league with a defense good enough to make that happen. For the season, Tannehill's had 3 games with 3TD's. That looks great on paper, but let's look at those strikes one by one. Five resulted from bad/average throws and broken tackles for big gains after the catch. One resulted from a wide open receiver that was not covered at all. One was a good throw on a screen pass. The other two, the only ones that really credit to Tannehill, were bullets thrown from inside the red zone. So out of 9 TD's in his best games of the season, seven of them were gimmes because someone else made a play. I could literally go on all day pulling stats and showing comparisons, but the rah rahs here will just counter with generic flames and other comments that show they don't care what their eyes actually see. They want Tannehill to be the next Marino, so nothing else matters....even when their new savior chokes away our first playoff berth since Pennington's magic.
So Tanny can't be great because he wasn't Peyton Manning this year? That's absolutely stupid. Op should be banned. Face it, with an average QB this year this team is a 5-6 win. Tanny covered up a lot of this teams weaknesses and made the offensive staff seem more competent, despite being so inexperienced.
Not sure where you get your stats from, but the first three QBs you mention, those are not "average" games for them. Additionally if you take away the "gimmes" (as you categorized them) from other QBs their TD number go down considerably as well.
Very few QB's are great their first 2 years in the NFL. The question is can he develop into a great QB? Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers were not great their first 2 years in the NFL. In the case of Brady and Rodgers, they had pretty good teams around them. I know RTH has been frustrating and needs to improve. There are times when he looks and other times where he's completely ineffective. How much of that is due to a horrible OL, running game, coaching vs ability and deficiencies in his ability to develop?
He did play like crap these last two weeks but it wasn't just him playing like crap. The entire team was an epic fail on both sides of the ball.
When we were 8-6 there were THill praise threads everywhere, now we lost out on the playoffs and of course Ryan is trash.... Anyone forgetting the fact that he gave us a chance at the playoffs in the first place?
With the right coaching and this season under his belt, I think he is good enough to lead us to the playoffs. Take away half of the sacks earlier this season and his confidence would have been higher. I also like Philbin and would start with the ***. coaches. KP
