Here's another prime example of why Ireland should be fired: In 2012 in the second round we chose to draft Jonathon Martin in the 2nd round, 42nd overall. To replace Long, maybe in Jeff's mind, sure. We needed WR's badly still. At #45, the Chicago Bears took Alshon Jefferey. I would LOVE to have Alshon Jeffery on this team. Jeffery is turning into a beast, has crazy talent, size, and huge hands and makes ridiculous catches with those huge paws. Jonathon Martin is on his couch somewhere being cuddled by his mommy.
I'm not saying it's necessarily bad if Philbin is retained. I'm saying it's really bad if it's not the next GM's decision. Not a good beginning if you do not let the next guy in charge of football operation make the decision at head coach.
This game makes any sense. It isn't an appropriate standard to judge picks on because you can do it for a huge portion of draft picks, good, bad, or acceptable so long that it isn't one of the singular best picks in the draft.
Philbin is a real nice guy that people like, but I'm really skeptical that he's considered any sort of coaching heavyweight by anyone.
I would have no problem if a high quality GM wanted to work with Philbin , as long as Ross doesn't force the next GM to keep Philbin as part of getting the job. Ross can certainly make his feelings regarding Philbin known to the GM candidates he interviews, but it should be up to the next GM to determine if he wants Philbin to remain as the head coach of the team. By forcing the next GM to keep Philbin as the HC, Ross will once again be limiting the number of quality GM prospects who might be interested in taking the job. Ross already made this mistake after the 2011 season when he refused to fire Ireland and made it a requirement of the new coach that he had to work with Ireland and that Ireland would have final say so over all personnel decisions. This requirement is basically the reason we now have a HC who had zero previous experience as a HC at any level of football. As far a Philbin being highly thought of around the league. I'm sure most people like him and think he is a good guy, but that doesn't mean they think he is a good head coach. If he was that highly thought of all along as a head coaching prospect, I doubt if he would have had to wait so long to get a head coaching job in the first place. Also I don't remember him being a candidate that other teams were interested in hiring when the Dolphins were sitting around waiting for Fisher to decide to take the head coaching job with the Dolphins. In fact if Philbin had not been hired by the Dolphins, I doubt he would be a HC in the NFL today.
To suggest Ross doesn't care about an enterprise hie invested $1.1 Billion in is to my mind just ludicrous IMO. He may have made some bad choices but to say he doesn't care about an investment that large is just plain dumb.
He's making money no matter what a ****up he is. That's why he doesn't care. It's why Ralph Wilson doesn't care. It's why Jerry Jones doesn't GAF that his fans hate his guts and want him to stop meddling in football operations. Everyone in the NFL makes money. It's a business. Ross doesn't care about the Dolphins. Not in the same way we do. He'll recoup those dollars and cents regardless of 0-16 or 19-0.
Seems a little ignorant to think that he would make the same amount of money with a losing team as he would with a winning team. Making some money isn't a goal for a billionaire. Making the most money possible is. ROI matters. Not to mention, for a person like Ross that doesn't need another dime ever again, being successful is what drives him.
Billionaires are ego manics for the most part, they want to be known as the best (Or owning the best things and toys). Ross is no different, he wants to win, just does not have the football sense of highering good personal yet, but he will learn or fail, but he has heart for the team in my eyes.
If he doesn't need another dime again, then ROI doesn't matter, no? Personal Ambition? The guy is admitted clueless about football and relies on committees. Oh, Jonathan Martin is a puss puss, let's get dungy to tell my coach what to do. Jason Taylor looks mad, I should stop smiling like a clown after a big loss. Oh, Ireland sucks. Here's a contract extension. Remember back at the owners meetings when Ross was speaking and Ireland was giving him death stares and Ross asked Ireland what to say? And you're talking about his personal Ambition? What ambition. He's a doofus. Being an NFL owner is the ultimate club. Ross bought into the club. He's a douchebag. He doesn't love the Dolphins one bit and he doesn't care if we're 8-8 or 16-0. Jeff Ireland is coming back folks. Deal with it.
If you don't think Ross cares about the Dolphins then you are lost. The guy put a ton into the team to try and build a winner.
He's thrown a ton of money into the team. He spends on players. He renovated the stadium. He buys up all the unsold tickets so the game can be televised locally. What else do you want him to do?
i think ross just cares about all the land that came with the purchase of the dolphins. i think that's his number one, two and three priorities. The dolphins being successful just makes that land more valuable
Other than not firing Jeff Ireland, what else has Ross done to make you guys hate him so much? The hatred for Ross may be the most asinine thing I've seen from other Dolphins fans, and that is REALLY saying something.
That's a pretty big one. For me, it's his general lack of awareness. He comes off as clueless. Whether it's the Harbaugh thing or Gator Day, he generally doesn't get it. But keeping Ireland this long is laughable and he deserves any hatred he gets as a result. Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
He spends on players? Everyone does that... He renovated the stadium? He also cried when Miami wouldn't pay for his stadium and then turned around to give Michigan all kinds of money. He buys up unsold tickets because it benefits him to not have games blacked out. Sorry, I don't think he loves the team. And when Jeff Ireland and co. remain next year, it will be plainly obvious to everyone.
Firing Ireland obviously is the big one, that's why I said with exception to that. Yeah, the Gator Day was bad, as was the Harbaugh chase but the Harbaugh chase actually proves my point. He went about it wrong, but it shows he's dedicated to winning.
Ireland will be retained and to add to it Philbin will be on a short leash or fired. Depends on if he is willing to fall "In step" Look for Wisenhunt to be heavily courted I don't expect Philbin to be fired until next year. Wisenhunt will be brought in as OC to learn personal and assess the situation. Philbin will be let go next year with Wisenhunt being promoted. In a crazy twist of fate, Philbin may even stay as OC. Couldn't write this stuff if I tried
Agree to disagree then. I think he absolutely loves the team, but I don't expect to change your view on it.
ROI matters because that's how an investment is evaluated. If you are correct and he doesn't care about the team, then ROI is literally the only thing that matters. He will try to maximize it. I refuse to believe that a 'doofus' could become a largely self-made billionaire. If he didn't care, why would he waste his time forming committees and trying to figure out to the best of his ability how to handle situations? He would just let things run themselves. Put your personal feelings for his actions aside, it's clear there are a number of reasons that would motivate Ross to care about the team's record.
I will say this though, IF Ireland is retained now, then I will be pissed at Ross. Right now though I have no real reason to be.
As Hardcore pointed out, there is a real and legitimate history since buying the Dolphins of stupid behavior. Ranging from Harbaugh to the Orange carpet. Every season that passes, he does something bizarre and foolish. Let's not pretend otherwise.
I don't personally hate Ross. I just don't think he has a clue how to run a franchise. Ireland being #1, the Harbaugh situation, Gator day, the circus of JLO/Gloria Estafan/marc Anthony and he doesn't seem to be able to make a move without consulting a council. I'll give him credit that he tries everything. I also think he cares about this team and winning. I just don't think he's a guy that will lead us to the promised land. It starts at the top.
No one is saying he hasn't made mistakes. That is obvious and not the point of contention, which was that Ross doesn't care about the record of the Dolphins. While he may be a little bit aloof to football culture, that doesn't make him stupid and it doesn't show that he doesn't care about the results, either financially or organizationally, which I have argued are correlated.
I understand where you're coming from but Ross definitely makes more money when the stands are full and a winning franchise that packs the stands is likely worth another couple hundred million if you try to sell the team. Additionally Ross has shown the desire at least from the way I read into his statements, to build a winning team, he seems to genuinely care. He just doesn't seem to know yet how to go about it. JMHO
This is fair. The other stuff we can write off to Ross still being relatively new as an NFL owner. If he doesn't fire Ireland after this mess, he's either clueless or doesn't care. Either way, he will be a bad owner.
Dumbest post I've ever read on this site, no facts back up this "post" and while Ross may not be the smartest owner in the NFL from a football IQ POV, he's no dummy (dummy's don't build fortunes worth over $4billion), and to suggest he doesn't want to win is the stupidest thing I've ever read here. JMVHO If he fails to fire Ireland I will hate the man, but still to suggest he doesn't care about winning is indefensible, which your posts have clearly proven.
Soooo, I'm watching the NFL Network and they question Miami and again its said no one in the NFL can understand why Ireland remains and again the comparison to Matt Millen. Its like the NFL Network has an Ireland/Millen firing show on cue.
