If Joe Philbin goes hard to bat for Mike Sherman then I think it could cost Philbin his job. So I'm kind of hoping that's what is happening here.
That's fair. And I kind of a agree that that could be shady. But some here need to differentiate between the local beat writers/bloggers and the national media types (Schefter, Mortensen, Clayton, Rappaport, etc.) that have legitimate sources.
Dude are you serious? Pretty much every time they open their mouth it's followed by a report that's a complete 180 of what they previously said.
If Philbin throws Sherman under the bus, it's going to cost him the locker room. After all, he's the guy who let Sherman work his magic. Players usually don't respond well to coaches who sacrifice assistants to save their own hides, especially when they did absolutely nothing to correct the problem themselves.
2 of our tds against new england came from throwing quick swings and flares to our rbs (including the game winner). tell me why we didnt throw any to our rbs the last 2 games. it was open, as it has been all year long. as bad as our run game is, this should be a staple in this offense just like it is for new orleans with darren sproles. our rbs should have no less than 70 yards receiving per game. i'll take our rbs one on one with a lb in space all day. sherman is so clueless.
I don't agree with that. The locker room wants Sherman gone. If Philbin made that happen, they'd probably be more appreciative than anything. They might even respect him more because they know the two are close friends and know it would have to be difficult for Philbin to fire his pal because of poor performance.
I'm completely serious. Show me a time this happens from the guys I mentioned. It happens very rarely. Rappaport is not making up a source that claims Tannehill lost faith in Sherman.
I think this more closely approximates the truth. I think if he keeps Mike Sherman the players will be convinced that the coach isn't really willing to make tough calls with respect to himself and his own people but is more than willing to dismiss players for poor performance or because they said something to the press or whatever.
Probably. And I'm saying, they're likely to want Philbin gone, too, as he's the guy who's ultimately responsible for Sherman's performance and did absolutely nothing discernible whatsoever to improve it.
I don't disagree with replacing Sherman, but if anyone is under the impression that a coaching change is all that is needed to get this offense going, then they are whistling dixie. 2013 -- 19.8 PPG 2012 -- 18.0 PPG 2011 -- 20.6 PPG 2010 -- 17.1 PPG 2009 -- 22.5 PPG 2008 -- 21.6 PPG Folks, that's through 3 different offensive coordinators. At some point, you have to simply come to the realization that the problem may be more than just coaching. I'm not big on looking at just PPG to make an evaluation though. Let's take a look at points per drive: 2013 -- 1.56 PPD (22nd) 2012 -- 1.42 PPD (26th) 2011 -- 1.60 PPD (20th) 2010 -- 1.40 PPD (27th) 2009 -- 1.80 PPD (15th) 2008 -- 1.90 PPD (13th) It's interesting to me that our most productive offenses as far as scoring per drive were when we didn't have any high priced receivers and could run the ball when we were in the redzone.
I don't think there's been any indication of that. They want Sherman gone but don't mind if Philbin stays. It is what it is. Just because it makes sense in your head doesn't mean that's what they think.
Philbin is never going to throw Sherman under the bus publically, but he will accept Sherman's decision to retire. That is how thing will go down, I believe, behind the scenes.
That's kinda funny because there's also little indication that "they" (the locker room) want Sherman gone. We have one report about Tannehill, and then we have, for instance, Mike Wallace saying that he is still confident in Sherman because he did a good job to put them in a position to succeed.
I think the battle lines are being drawn. There is a disconnect between the front office and coaching staff. The front office is currently leaking things to the media to shed blame onto the coaching staff. The coaching staff is, in turn, going to defend themselves to the bitter end and complain that because of the players, they were unable to put together anything cohesive.

Wow, I can't say Im surprised anyone lost confidence in Sherman, but for Tannehill to apparently say it... that surprises me a bit. Glad he's not out there defending Sherman though, the guy that helped him get to where he is today out of loyalty only. No surprise to hear this though as I said... hell, we heard reports of the team being disgruntled with the playcalling, and the lack of fundamentals in the OC/game plan early in the season.
I sure never thought I would live to say this but I miss Tim Ruddy and gang and I miss Ricky Williams more then anyone of course I would take Reggie Bush back in a hurry. Tannyehill should not have been drafted that high the dolphins were dumb for not trying to move up for Luck winning a meaningless game and doing what the colts did is what separates the Colts from us. I hope Sherman and Ireland get the axe .

it was probably his 4th or 5th read, and this o-line doesnt give enough time for 4-5 reads. there should be designed playcalls where the 1st read for the qb is to go to his rb. the 2 tds to our rbs against the pats looked like designed plays to the rbs. tannehill looked directly at them.
@AdamHBeasley When I told Philbin today that there is an anti-Sherman sentiment in the locker room (based on my and Ian's reporting), he blanched.
It means the color went out of his face, and is usually used to describe what happens when someone hears horrible news.
Tannehill only led the Dolphins offense to 7 points the last two weeks of the season. Including throwing 3 interceptions against the Jets yesterday. He consistently missed a wide open Wallace on deep throws throughout the season. Yet we are suppose to now believe that Tannehill's biggest problem is that he has lost confidence in the one coach who has been his biggest backer. Tannehill is nothing but a very average NFL QB at this time and he still hasn't shown that he can be the type of QB who can lead his team to big victories at the most crucial time. I don't care if Sherman is the OC next year or not. All I do know is that Tannehill needs to show a lot more at the QB position next year than he has so far, or the Dolphins need to use their first round pick in 2015 to select a new QB of the future.
Two of those 3 ints weren't his fault and the other happened in garbage time. Missing his favorite receiver, no slot receiver, no run game and the worst offensive line in football. Not sure how you can come to that conclusion.
I come to that conclusion because the Dolphins scored exactly 7 points against the the Bills and Jets the past two weeks. Good QB's find ways to overcome the loss of of key players. I guess Tannehill overthrew a wide open Wallace yesterday because he was upset Hartline wasn't in the game. I think Tannehill deserves one more season to show that he is a quality QB. I just don't blame everything that is wrong with this offense on the coaching staff. I think Tannehill still needs to prove that he can become the long term answer at QB position for the Dolphins. Yesterday he was never sacked and the Dolphins had a decent running game, compared to how poorly they ran for most of the season. Tannehill just didn't make the plays the better QB's make to lead their team to victory. Maybe he will eventually become a good QB in the NFL, but right now he remains a huge question mark for the Dolphins heading into next season, IMO.
We can disagree, but I just don't think its fair criticism. He outplayed every QB in his draft class this season except Wilson who IMO is a question mark to some degree as he isn't asked to carry the team. Different topic for a different thread. As well as out playing quite a few of the better QBs in the league. In his second season. With a terrible line. His deep ball does need work but I can't say he has many other flaws
