I think many people ignore the simple fact that Ross didn't buy the Dolphins to become rich; or even richer. He's a fan, and he wants to have fun with the team he bought. It's a hobby. I don't necessarily blame him for it (heck, if I had the money to buy an NFL team, you can be damn sure I would be the second coming of Jerry Jones; alas I'd draft better) but I'm not sure we're ever going to see a Bill Belichik type of coach as long as Ross owns the Dolphins.

I certainly hate having to switch coaches all the time because it is a measure of the organizations failure, and I personally think the Browns and Redskins made a mistake in being so quick to fire theirs (ESPECIALLY the Browns. Give him a real QB and the Browns are a playoff contender), I'm not really sure I have much confidence in Philbin. But if we get a new GM I won't mind if he is back I guess. I don't care either way. My enthusiasm is reaching an all-time low.

Teams with the most coaching changes since 2000: Raiders (8), Browns, Lions, Dolphins, Bills, Redskins (7). Though it includes interim which I'm not sure I count, 5 is still a lot for us in 13 years. Coincidence they all have sucked? Now do they just hire bad coaches often, or do they suck because they keep changing them?

I am not sure about the inferior competition. Against inferior competition you still score more than 7 points in 2 games. I would give the Dolphins the edge at quarterback by a fair margin. After that it is up for grabs... D-line? Both Jets and Bills have a very good dline. Linebacker? No need to even discuss. Safety and corner? Toss up with Bills/slightly better than jets.

On offense...O-line? No need to discuss. Running back? Umm, jackson and spiller...inferior? wide receiver? better than jets but woods and johnson? toss up.

When you break it down you don't lose twice to an inferior team. Not in the nfl. Miami took a small step forward this year by adding a playmaker on offense. Outside of that not much has changed.

I liked Rishard Matthews as much as anyone coming out of the draft but let's face the music here. He just plays. He doesn't necessarily play well. He dropped a critical 3rd down pass yesterday and was generally unspectacular. The guy catches 7.2 yards per attempt and 1.19 yards per pass snap. That's not good. Credit for WHAT exactly? Maybe Rishard ends up something down the road. Who knows. But he wasn't anything to clap yourself on the back for in 2013, that's for sure.

And Nolan Carroll I'm tempted perhaps to give Lou Anarumo some credit for. It's tempting. A 48% completion on balls thrown to his coverage, 7.1 YPA, 2 TDs, 3 INTs, 7 PDs, 1.37 yards per coverage snap...those are all good numbers. But in the end Nolan Carroll is going to go off somewhere else in free agency and probably not get any decent amount of money...so it's a tough call.

This is all true. To me, I'm not for or against keeping him necessarily but if I owned the team I'd probably move on from everyone involved. He isn't a "bad" coach but is he worth keeping for a few years to see if he can improve? I'd hire a new GM obviously and then let him make the call if I was Ross. But sticking with Philbin then getting a GM that he helps pick is a disaster waiting to happen IMHO. Ross has to find someone of substance to run this team and give it an identity, and I don't know if he is capable of finding the right person.

The thing I've been saying though is...what's the worse that can happen if you fire the dude? We really missing out on the next Bill Belichick or Bill Walsh here? Hardly.

The only innovations he's responsible for were the split-practice field thing which if I'm not mistaken was Mike Sherman's innovation, and then this no practice on Thursdays thing.

We have this allegiance to some kind of convention of timing, the "oh you CAN'T fire the guy until you've given him a chance" thing...where we're just supposed to blindly disregard what we've all been seeing and noticing because of some convention about how much time you're supposed to give a new coach.

I say eff it. Go for broke.

Frum's response was absolutely correct in context. Bringing developmentally impaired children into a football discussion was a crass manipulation and I found it offensive. It was the worst kind of emotional blackmail, and the last resort of a mean, small mind.

I'll say it too: in this context, I don't give a ****. Leave your Karl Rove impersonation out of our **** right here; it has no place, and the only ones who jumped up for the gross manipulation were a few easily-manipulated pizwits.

CK...how do you think firing Joe Philbin would reflect in NFL coaching circles? It sounds like alot of people in the NFL community are very high on Joe Philbin, especially how he "supposedly" kept the team together through the bullygate crap.

Would letting him go, reflect poorly on Ross and the Phins imo?

It might raise a few eyebrows but that's it. I think more likely a lot of folks in the NFL would see it within the context of Jeff Ireland's wild off season spending spree and how typically that leads to bad things for coaches.

Funny thing is, though it may raise an eyebrow or two, the REAL test would be which teams are out there trying to interview and potentially hire the man to be their head coach (or even offensive coordinator). And truthfully, none will even interview him for head coach, and the interest in him as an OC may be muted as well because he never called plays in Green Bay.

    Who cares?

The notion that we will not be able to find a coach and GM is absurd. there are only 32 of these jobs in the world and the people who want them always think that they are the best guy and that they will be the person to turn things around. That kind of ego is how you even get to the top level of this profession.

" we need to hire an offensive minded coach.."

Whenever I hear that from above I know were in trouble...hire the best head coach, the guy that has the fundamental intangibles you need.

Matthews showed improvement over his rookie year. IMO, he is still on the come. We haven't seen his ceiling yet. As for O'Keefe, whether or not he is a good WR coach, also Hartline had his best two seasons under him, but it's possible he would have anyway, regardless of who was the WR coach.

On top of all of that, if we get rid of Sherman, I don't mind seeing Philbin go with him. Think about it, our biggest asset is Tanny right now. We need a QB whisperer. If the offense has to learn a new system anyway, what does Philbin bring to the table?

Unless Philbin wants to bring in someone who will work with his/their system, and then, do we want that?

Mercifully I've been out of town during the past two games and didn't get a chance to watch this epic collapse live. I listened to yesterday's game on satellite radio though and was speechless by the end. Everything fell into place for them with Baltimore and they still don't get it done. This feels like the worst collapse since the 02 season in regards to everything being lined up nicely and the Dolphins just wetting themselves. I hope they clean house, after the New England game Miami should have been playing their best football. Somehow this coaching staff F'd it up. The only small consolation was that the local Ravens fans had to watch their team screw everything up too.

I don't know if anybody smelled it but the fear was in the back of all of our minds. I thought they were going to cruise to 10-6. I should have known. They needed to win just one of the last two and they're in and they score 7 points in 8 quarters. Ross is probably dumb enough to change absolutely nothing though.

I agree we should consider Hartline, when the dolphins had Marshall, general opinion on BH was that he was a below average 2nd WR. On Anarumo's job we should take into account Reshad Jone's 2012's great season even if he regresed this year, I think Clemmons played better than before this past two season, and Carrol and Wilson were considered very bad players, kinda like the Daniel Thomas of CBs.

What I don't really know is how you measure the impact of coaching on this players improvement, for all we know the reason they improved is because they are self-driven, dedicated, disciplined, studied the game, etc. and whoever coached them wouldn't have that much of an impact on their leve of improvement.

Normally you're an okay dude Sec, why you being a tool now? In that other thread I said my gut felt the Jets were gunna stomp us and you basically ridiculed that and talked like it was an impossibility, now sarcasm? I wasn't gloating, I'm just as disgusted with this team as you are. Sad part is I knew it was coming.

You're sounding like a Jet fan bro. Lighten up. ;)

The only logical reason to believe we would lose is if you thought we would come out flat and Geno Smith would handily outplay Ryan Tannehill.

If you predicted that than god bless ya, because like you I've seen this team find ways to lose before...but I doubted it would happen.

I think we all had that Eire feeling we would choke, but Section was 100% right in believing we would dominate that lousy GD football team.

No, the logical reason was because we usually split with them, we just finished playing like hot, sick ***, and (and I'm diagusted to say this but it's the truth) this team has ZERO killer instinct or heart, while (love him or hate him) the Jests have proven that they have Rex's back. They felt like they were playing for his job, and they love the guy. They came out fired up.

Our boys were playing for a shot at the playoffs, and **** the bed in Buffalo. They gave me NO reason whatsoever to believe that was gunna change against the Jets.

And for the record, that "lousy GD football team" finished ahead of us in the standings with the same record, so I can't call them that. We were just as lousy.

When Philben was asked if the team came out flat he said he didn't think so. He said we just didn't execute.
The fact of the matter is, the team didn't rise to the occasion and play inspired football unlike the Jets.
We were out played and out coached.

It's safe to say at this point that Philbin isn't half the coach Rex Ryan is. Sucks to say that but it's obvious. Despite his mouth he gets it done, an 8-8 second place finish with that roster should win him coach of the year. It takes us eight or nine tries to beat the Pats but he finds a way to get it done every year. And once in the playoffs. I hate that he coaches the Jets. He could have easily been the Dolphins coach but that's another thing we can thank Parcells for.

  30. I think its likely that Philbin is not a good fit in Miami. He may improve but as of this moment you can color me unimpressed by him. I think Ross should hire a new GM and let him decide if he wants to retain Philbin or replace him.

Nah...other things go into making a team lousy. The Jets are horrific. They just over-achieve. We under-achieve. Not sure which is better....more talented under-achievers or the opposite...

Rex is 4-6 vs. our collection of un-motivating idiot coaches BTW....

Pretty much true, besides it mattering that we usually "split" with them. While that held true, it is an impulsive assumption that frankly isn't a factor.

A team that has nothing to play for is always dangerous. I know it's been said they were playing for Rex, but playing for a playoff spot puts more pressure on a team than playing for a coach. I think Miami played tight. And the longer the game went on, the tighter they got.

A few other things were working against the Dolphins:

    1. The Buffalo disaster. Had they lost to NE and beat Buffalo, I believe they would have been in a better mental state. Getting pasted by a crappy team does more bad than beating a good team does good. This is subjective of course and is just my opinion.

    2. Beating the Jets so badly in the first game. Adding to the "Save Rex" motivation was the "revenge" motivation. No team likes to lose to a divisional opponent, but getting humiliated by them is 10 times worse. Miami humiliated NY in the first meeting and I'm sure that was in the back of NY's heads. Extra incentive if you will.

Those two factors, along with the intense pressure of what amounted to a playoff game for Miami contributed to the upset.
